There is no rule that you must have an ancestor altar before another altar or to have a deity altar at all. These are practices by Spiritualists which span many cultures, including hoodoo. But many do have an ancestor altar, and more so, many have altars designated for the type of work they are doing, such as an area where love work is done, or money work, revenge work, or protection work.

Sometimes, depending on space, these areas may be the same and are cleansed between uses and repurposed during the work. Those with more space may have designated areas or altars for each type of work.

Lucky Mojo has a book that discusses this in greater detail, it goes along will with the Hoodoo Candle magic book as well.

Hello friends,

I was wondering how can I clean, according to rootwork tradition, used altar tools such as saucers and incense braziers. Just plain washing with soap and tap water will do or is there any product that can be used, such as epsom salts in a mixture with other herbs or curios?

There are indeed traditional ways to clean an altar. The most often used product is Chinese Wash. Items too fragile to wash may be dry-wiped and either oiled or suffumigated in incense.

Hi all,

I’m in the process of making myself a new altar. It will primarily be made of wood. However I do work with resin as well. I know some traditions include placing silver dimes under the corners of the altar or bay leaves to hide your rootwork or prevent having it reversed. I’m wondering if the idea to embed the dimes or bay leaves in a thin layer of resin would be a good one. They would essentially be a permanent part of the altar then.

The reason I am asking first is in case there is an aspect I don’t know about. For example, I believe I read on Lucky Mojo’s silver dime page or here in the forums that if you wear a silver dime around your ankle, and the anklet breaks, it has essentially “taken a hit” for you and in a case like that perhaps I wouldn’t want it to be permanent. And do bay leaves need to be refreshed regularly to stay effective?

Hi Risen Raven,

It is great you are creating a sacred space for your work. You can use resin to seal in the dimes, seals of Solomon, even dry herbs. I have never heard of a curse breaking an alter, and historically altars are pretty long-lasting, look at Stonehenge. Depending on your tradition, you can create a circle to consecrate the space, or drape it with clothes.
Bay leaves can be used dried or fresh, they equally powerful. They repel bugs, celebrate victory, and hide work. If you have access to bay tree and want to use fresh bay go right ahead, if not use dried.
Be mindful of fire safety, bay leaves burn, so does wood. Remember to use either sheet pan, or nonporous stone like quartz, when working with fire.

I absolutely LOVE Christopher No Saint response, I did want to touch on your question about the resin. Yes it is acceptable method and a long traditional method, one we see a lot in Mexican Folk Magic. I have many charms, Saint statues, etc that are sealed in resin so you can still see them and also they support you. A wonderful example of this is the statue of Satisima Muerte, her base is carved out and filled with luck and protection items, then sealed with resin.

It really depends on the person, their culture, the rules regarding alatar placement within their religion (if any) and their environment.

A person who lives with others and uses their bedroom may have to sleep with the altar, those who work in secret may make one and then dismantle it or hide it in a closet after work.

Workers with spare space may keep certain altars away from the bedroom, such as cursing and crossing, but will allow others like blessing or love in their room.

Some religions forbid the keeping of ancestor altars within any room where the devotee may have sex. Others believe that the ancestors -- of whom we are the sexual offspring -- should be present on a bedroom altar when fertility or long-term matrimony are desired.

In other words -- no one answer applies to all!

There is a wonderful book written on altars that would be very helpful!

Hi 1agape83,

In certain religions (which I will not name) there is a belief you do not have an ancestor altar in your bedroom, because you, in theory, have sex in your bedroom, and in these religions sex is unclean.

Some religions build altars on the ground because the spirit they seek is known for being on the ground, or from inside the earth.

Other religions say an altar must be raised up so it is not unclean.

In feng shui your money altar must be in the southwest corner of your house, well if your bedroom is in the southwest corner you must have your money altar in your bedroom.

Basically, everyone is right, and no one is right, all at the same time.

If you belong to a religion that says you cannot put pictures of your ancestors in your bedroom, don't do that. But if you have pictures of ancestors on your dresser, and you light a candle to them and tell them good morning, and good night and your house has not caught fire, why change?

In hoodoo, there are few rules on where you put an altar. Hoodoo originated in slavery and in poverty. Most slaves, as well as Appalachian granny witches, and Native Americans, only had the luxury of 1 room housing, which was a kitchen, bedroom, family room, sometimes the bathroom, and the altar space.

I am personally a fan of clay saucers that go under flower pots as an altar, and you see them all over my house.

You have a lot of options for altars in the bedroom. Altars can be personalized for you and your situation, and adapted to your environment as needed.

As Mr Christopher pointed out, it depends upon the cultural context that an altar may or may be placed in the bedroom. If your focus is Hoodoo Rootwork, it is not uncommon to have an altar in the bedroom if you are only working things for yourself and that is the only space available for you. Some people will only set up the altar when they are doing work, and take it down when the work is finished, often working slowly over a week or nine days or a lunar cycle with candles, herbs, oils, minerals, etc...

Some ideas for altars that you could put into your bedroom would be an altar for Protection, or for Dreams and Psychic Visions, for Love, For Healing, For Blessings.

Thank you Christopher! This is very helpful. I will work on space to create altars for protection, or for Dreams and Psychic Visions, Love attraction, Healing myself, prosperity blessings.

For healing, can it be for my family too besides me or does that have to be on a "working altar"?

In addition to the great advice of Mr. Christopher, I would add that altars are made for different reasons and some are permanent others people make when needed and take down when done working with them. Adding family to a healing altar where you are currently working is fine.

A book Lucky Mojo carries goes into details about setting up altars and would be a great asset.

Greetings. Should one create a special altar for hoodoo or not? Since it is not a religion, I am not sure. And if an altar is cool, what are some examples of a Hoodoo altar?

An altar can be a place of either veneration or work. There is a very good book on this subject by Phoenix LeFae called "Hoodoo Shrines and Altars: Sacred Spaces in Conjure and Rootwork." You can find it here:

I'm apprehensive about working with entities right now. I had this statue ordered as a birthday present for myself. Its got no symbols, just ishtar in those two "rings" or loops she holds in her hands, and horns like lilith or a succubus. I'm considering using it as a totemic representation of desire, or dedicating it to some primordial feminine life force or Babalon type energy, but I'm just not sure. I like the idea of using this type of idol as a symbol for desire, drive, creativity without the bondage that comes with pantheistic or esoteric entities.

I'm not sure exactly where it would be more appropriate to post my question, so I've chosen this closer section, if anyone has any thoughts on this, your help is greatly appreciated!

I want to have a wand or a dagger as my spiritual companion that I like, am happy with, and want to use all the time. I have been trying to find one for 5-6 years. I have had wands custom-made at great expense, but the ones that are made don't work for me. I even resist using them and hold them with an inner feeling of 'That's not what I want, this is not my spiritual companion.' I know that I have very discriminating tastes, and it is difficult to find a wand or dagger I like. If I were to customize a wand, I wouldn't know what kind of style or design I would like; my mind is empty on this. I've been trying to find this for years, and it's been very frustrating.
I would like to know how I can get a wand or dagger that I am happy with and want to use all the time, and what I can do about it.

It sounds like you are not happy with the options you have found, my suggestion is that you may want to either make your own that fits your desire or work with someone to make one for you based on your specifics.

Thank you very much JayDee, the problem that bothers me is that I seem to be stuck in a strange rhythm, I can't find a shortsword or wand that suits me no matter what, no matter whether I customize it or search for it I can't find one that suits me, even though I had a wand customized to my liking before and it looked exactly like what I wanted, but I rejected it so much inside that I don't know what the problem is! I think I might have to do something about it, but I'm completely clueless, so I'm looking forward to hearing from more people

The issue sounds more psychological than magical, you are rejecting them internally. Or consider they don't want to work with you and you need to work with something else.

AIRR Tech Team Report 8/13/2024 The Hungry Ghost Festival!

The AIRR Tech Team lit their lotus lanterns and set them adrift on the internet river to mark the completion of a new web page on Zhong Yuan Jie, the Taoist Hungry Ghost Festival. This traditional celebration is held on the 15th night of the 7th month of the Chinese lunar calendar, at the full Moon, when rituals are performed to honour those who died without children or whose descendants have not honoured or respected their memories. They are presented with food offerings, incense, and burning joss paper or spirit money for their prosperity in the afterlife. This year Zhong Yuan Jie falls on August 18th, so you have plenty of time to get your food, incense, and joss paper offerings ready to assist the lost dead!
