Hello! Shane from Illinois

Unread post by redraven15 » Thu Nov 03, 2022 7:09 pm

Hello!

I wanted to introduce myself. I'm Shane from Illinois. Originally Tucson because of a military family. My Dad sent me your way to starting formally studying Hoodoo and Rootwork. He's from Mississippi and grew up around it. We may have had some practitioners in the family but it's naturally hard to track. I've been studying many elements of rootwork all my life without knowing it all came together as Hoodo. I'd like to know how to get started. I saw the links in the two intro posts before mine which are very helpful. I'm happy to speak on the phone too.

Many blessings,
Shane

Hello Shane,

Welcome to the forum, and thank you for expressing an interest in all we have to offer.

I'm sure you have been exploring a lot on your own, but these are links to general information on Hoodoo to give you a jumping off point:

Hoodoo History:
http://luckymojo.com/hoodoohistory.html

Mojo Hands:
http://luckymojo.com/mojo.html

Oils:
http://luckymojo.com/oils.html

Baths:

Powders:

Incense:

Candles:

Herbs:

Conditions and how we can address them:
http://luckymojo.com/hoodooataglance.html

Here is some info on how the forum is set up. It is divided into four major parts:

1) News and Announcements about the Lucky Mojo Curio Company and this site.

2) Lucky Mojo Spiritual Supplies and how to use them, listed in threads by product type and product title.

3) Life Conditions and Situations, with recommended Lucky Mojo products, spells, and advice.

4) The Online Hoodoo Community, including sites, events, and outreach sponsored by Lucky Mojo.

When you post, it helps your moderators, who are recompensed volunteers, if you post in the area of the board that is best suited to the archival of your question or comment. That way moderators will not have to move your post or merge it into ongoing threads.

If you can't find a post you made it may have been moved or merged. Go to your profile by clicking on your name and "search recent posts" -- you will find it.

Within each board section there are STICKY threads -- ones that always stay "stuck" to the top. These are popular discussion-threads that you can read and add to if your questions or comments fall into one of these oft-broached topics. If you don't see a "sticky" that relates to your question, feel free to start a new thread in the relevant section. We will merge your thread into the relevant "sticky" thread.

We do have a few "thou shalt not" rules here, and they can be found in the Forum Rules link at the top of each page.

Most important for newbies are these five common errors to avoid:

1) Please do not come here asking for our formulas for conjure oils or for instructions on how to use spiritual supplies that you bought at a grocery store or at a competitor of ours; this is the Lucky Mojo Forum and is financially supported by the Lucky Mojo Curio Co.

2) Please do not post illegal copies of material from other web sites or from books.

3) Please do not post put-downs of any group of people based on their religion, race, or national origin, including derogatory comments about religions to which you may have previously been an adherent or comments in which you seek to falsely conflate any religion with the practice of evil sorcery.

4) Please do not start new topics; we have thousands of topic-threads already in place.

5) Please do not quote people by using the copy-paste function; it wastes space.

Just let us know if you need anything.

Best of luck,
Mr. Christopher

Welcome to the forum Shane!

You may be interested in the books published by Lucky Mojo. They are also available as a baker's dozen which produces a discount. They books are great on learning authentic hoodoo from real practitioners. They go great with Miss Cats' classic book Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic, and if you decide, down the path to take her course, they are supplemental text as well as course requirements.

Thank you, JayDee!!
This is very helpful. I ordered the baker's dozen along with Hoodoo Herb & Root Magic. I will order any additional materials I need for the course. Thank you for this information.

I do have one question. My father picked up "Sticks, Stones, Roots, & Bones" by Stephanie Rose Bird many years ago. I've been looking through this book. Have a read it? If so, what are your thoughts?

Thank you,
Shane

redraven15,

I do not like to speak on other authors, more so those not affiliated. I can say I have read the book and it does not reflect what I was taught or the work I have learned. I would look at the books and compare the material, the sources, see if the work reflects the authentic work that is documented over years of research by those like Miss Cat and Hyatt. Many people write books, it is up to the reader to vet the material.

Thank you, JayDee.

That is helpful. I'll start with the books I just ordered and study the recommended material here to begin. Based on the various authors I have been read so far, it appears as if there is a lot of variation in the information available which can be confusing. I appreciate that this site organizes the information and uses researched practitioners.
