Hi everyone. Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. I am new in Hoodoo, but I have known about it for about 8 years, the fabulous Hoodoo Festival motivated me to learn more and practice. Many blessings to you all. Becky

Should a person create a special altar for Hoodoo? Since it is not a religion but uses the Bible, I was thinking of having a mini-Bible, my Jesus statue and a candle. Would that be a start and what are some ideas for a Hoodoo altar?

Hi dragondog9! I'm new to hoodoo too. in fact I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be answering you or not but there is a fabulous book called Hoodoo Shrines and Alters: Scared Spaces in Conjure and Rootwork by Miss Phoenix LeFae that I highly recommend. here is the link:

dragondog9,

Hoodoo is not a religion nor does it have an initiation process. However, many workers, in fact, a large percentage are also practicing protestants. An altar is a space that you can use to pray, prepare items, and do work. You may have one standing altar, you have several altars, you may make an altar for work then take it down when completed.

Examples:
1. Ancestor altar where you have photos of family who have passed, and religious items such as Saints, Guardian Angels, you may burn candles here and pray, and do blessing work. Great products for this altar include Spirit Guide, Psychic Vision, Blessing, Indian Spirit Guide, Guardian Angel, White Figural Cross Candles (not an exclusive list).

2. Standing altar different than ancestor, you may have a standing working altar for money drawing. This may have lodestones, Money Drawing, Wealthy Way, Money Stay with Me, horse shoe, Green Figural Cross Candles, rabbit foot, Alligator paws (not an exclusive list).

3. Temporary altar may be one for Hot Foot an enemy, you may use a space as an altar for this work and dismantle it when not in use. This may include Hot Foot, Crossing, Destruction, Black Figural Cross, Black Figural candle, Black Devil candle, Graveyard Dirt, Vinegar Jars, (not an exclusive list).

You can find several topics on spiritualism and religion on this forum page, look at specific topics to get more details.

When you stay standing altar, do you mean it is high on a shelf and you stand to do your work? Or do you mean it stands around for awhile?

dragondog9 ,

I mean standing as it is an altar that is always around and in your home and you work on it daily/weekly, etc.
