hi,

I'm halfway through this book, and although I find it really interesting sometimes it cites oils whose recipes I can't find anywhere.

I've also got the "legends of incense, herbs, and oil magic" but there are no instructions on how to make them.

where can I find such knowledge?

Thanks,

Sara

Hello Sara / Elphaba09, and welcome to the Lucky Mojo Forum!

Recipes for the manufacture of spiritual oils, incense, sachets, and bath crystals are closely-held knowledge by those who have inherited them, sussed them out, or created their own recipes.

My livelihood, the livelihood of my employees, and the livelihoods of all of the hundreds of retail shop-keepers who buy wholesale from Lucky Mojo and make their livings by selling our products to the public, depend on those formulas being authentic, hand-made, blessed with our prayers, and proprietary in nature.

I do not even give my recipes to the students who take my one-year correspondence course in hoodoo and then come study with me as in-person apprentices.

Most people understand that it is not socially acceptable to stroll by a restaurant, look at the menu in the window, walk into the kitchen, and ask the chef for the recipe for the dish you read about on the menu. However, when it comes to recipes for metaphysical goods, a great number of folks, both customers and non-customers alike, ask us for our recipes.

Our reply is the same as the chef's: Order what you want from our menu, and we will make it up fresh for you and serve it to you with all of the love, skill, and experience that we bring to our work.

The author of "Legends of Incense, Herb, and Oil Magic" was also a maker of spiritual supplies. He was in the business of selling his goods -- and made very good ones too, in his day. Therefore he did not see a reason to disclose his recipes.

There are some books with metaphysical recipes on the market, but from my experience, most of them are not historically or magically accurate. They are amateurish and are published by people who do not actually make the products they describe.

Good luck to you!

Two of the books i have written on African-American folk magic.

At left is the 432-page hardcover "Hoodoo Rootwork Correspondence Course." In print since 2003, it is the rarest, because it is only available to students who sign up to take my year-long course. On the right is the best-selling 224-page "Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic," in print since 2002, with tens of thousands of copies sold in its 20-year history. You can buy my books at Lucky Mojo -- https://luckymojo.com/publishing or at your local metaphysical bookstore or via Amazon. To sign up for the course and get the course book, read about it first at https://luckymojo.com/mojocourse.html (Photo by Shelby O’Connelly.)

Re: Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic Book by Catherine Yronwode Questions and Answers

Unread post by Kmarshall » Sat Sep 09, 2023 6:52 am

Hi there,

I'm new to this forum but I've been an herbalist for nearly 30 years and a hoodoo practitioner for two years or so.

I grow many useful plants in my yard so I was excited to find Catherine Yronwode's book Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic. However, I find some of the entries confusing so I'm hoping for some clarification.

For example, under boneset, it lists white snake root as another name. But these are two totally different plants. Boneset is Eupatorium while white snake root is Ageratina altissima.

Another confusing one is High John root, which lists another name as bindweed. Bindweed is of the genus Convovolus and High John root is the Ipomoea genus. Bindweed is all over the place and considered invasive while High John root is hard to find.

Am I to understand that these are interchangeable? I'm not sure if I'm understanding the book correctly. Thank you for any help you can offer.

Hello, Kmarshall -- and welcome to our forum.

Folk magic is based on common names and so the botanical names listed in the book are those which have been identified by myself and others as the species sold under the various listed common names. There is no attempt to conflate the species, only to help the non-botanist practitioner -- who knows plants by common names, many of them regional common names -- to obtain what they wish to have. Over my 60-plus years of buying these magical herbs under their common names in stores and via mail order, these are what i have been sent. Folks in the magical community usually accept substitutions based on common names. This practice has been going on for millennia, of course.

Then there is the problem of working with older printed sources, or with rural informants. Many people still call the Asteraceae the Compositae or the Daisy Family and refer to the Fabaceae as the Leguminosae or the Pea family. The Apiaceae were formerly the Umbelliferae because their flower-heads resembled umbrellas -- easy to teach a child! -- but the new family name comes from Apium, an ancient and unknown type of Celery, and Apium comes from Apis, which means Bee, which is difficult and illogical to a child, as Bees harvest nectar and pollen from thousands of species of flowers. Meanwhile, we are living through the constant reconfiguring of the phylogenetic tree -- and the resultant taxonomic binomials -- as DNA studies bring out subtle differences in plants once thought to be closely related.

I have updated the taxonomic and common names in the book regularly since 2002 -- we are now in the 13th revised edition -- and i welcome any comments and suggestions on how to deal with this problem, without limiting common names to the "most common" (as Wikipedia does), when in fact there are ethnic regional American common names that may be shared among several species or even among plants in more than one genus. This is particularly important when the ethnic regional names come from the Black community, because there is a steady pressure to "correct" those common names to bring them into conformity with White ethnic and regional common names.

Again, thanks for your comments. I am always grateful for the opportunity to update the plant lists. They are a continual work in progress.

Amazon Alert:

Once again, Amazon (and its subsidiary AbeBooks), has totally screwed up its listings for "Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic." There are multiple issues:

1) The official listings for the book from Lucky Mojo Curio Co., both in softcover and hardcover, are GONE. Only used book resellers are listed.

2) In most cases, the front cover image of the paperback edition has been replaced by a fan-upload of a well-worn used copy of the book, sideways. Prices range from $38.00 to $60.00 for a book that we sell BRAND NEW and SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR for %18.00.

2) The back cover image of the paperback edition is no longer shown.

3) Some resellers have images of the front cover of the hardcover edition but list their offerings as "softcover."

4) Two reseller listings for the paperback have the correct image but they are listed as "Unknown Binding" and one says "Currently unavailable. We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock."

Nagasiva has been dealing with Amazon about these isues for days -- with no resolution yet. He is now on his second cycle of trying to get the many problems corrected.

Until we post here that the problems at Amazon and Abebooks are solved, the only way to buy a NEW copy of "Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic" at the proper retail price, either in paperback or hardcover is directly from Lucky Mojo.
