Hello from Agnieszka!

Unread post by agnieszka » Sun Dec 10, 2023 11:02 am

Hi I’m Agnieszka and I’ve been interested for a while in hoodo and rootwork.

My heritage is fully spanish so I haven’t done anything related to hoodoo because I heard it is a closed practice and people without black heritage or a initiation can’t practice it.

Am I allowed to practice the spells or rituals on this page even being fully white and Spanish?

Thanks for reading and bye :)

Hello, Agnieszka --

Hoodoo is a form of mingled folklore that came together in African American communities in the 19th century. It is built upon a basis of African folk magic customs and beliefs; worked with reference to a Christian (primarily Protestant) theological system; utilizing a variety of Native American, Middle Eastern, African, European, and Asian herbs, roots, and spices; with an admixture of Jewish folk magic in regard to the magical use of the Psalms. It has 175 years of documented history, from both Black and White folklorists and practitioners, that indicate it has been and is by African Americans and by people of mixed and varied ethnicities and for clients who are African American and of mixed and varied ethnicities.

The ideas that hoodoo is a "closed system," that is requires sub-Saharan African DNA to practice it, or that it requires initiation and or ancestor veneration and/or dedication to African deities first appeared on the internet around 2005 - 2010. This exclusionary idea had reached the status of a full-blown doctrine around 2015. It is simple and easy to disprove, merely by going back and reading historical documentation on hoodoo from circa 1860 - 1960.

Then, for more on the subject, roam around my free online book, "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice,"
