Hello everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

Image

We are here again with four more wonderful web pages sponsored by my Patreon supporters who will receive a preview of our ninth installment (out of fifteen total) of our scanning, cleanup, text transcriptions, and annotations of all 50 of the classic 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt. These full-colour trading cards present a selected set of the rarest and most valuable magical charms in the collection of the British Museum. This week i have transcribed, coded, and annotated the third set of four of the 38 ancient amulet texts and Siva has scanned and cleaned up their exquisite chromolithographic images. As we work on each card, i also write commentaries on these miniature masterpieces and cross-link them to other Lucky Mojo pages on world-wide folk magic. The finished cigarette cards are only available for Patreon members now -- but next year, thanks to their financial support, the entire set will open to the public for permanent display at the Lucky W Amulet Archive.

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $8.00 per month for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. After a year, these pages are given to the public to read for free.

This week in "Leaves from the Root Doctor's Garden," i am disclosing the recipes for a wonderful group of traditional herbal medicines that came to light in 1953 when the United States Food and Drug Administration destroyed a shipment of nine different herbal medicines from Father Francis's Herbal Remedies Co.

Go to:
http://herbmagic.com/Father-Francis-Her ... -1953.html

to find the newly public page.

This page is part of the Herb Magic web site at

Once more we have updated our popular web page on 20th century lucky tokens, pocket pieces, and mascots from the 20th century. These coin-like objects were manufactured by custom mints in brass, bronze, or copper, and some of them were gilded. Later examples were stamped of aluminum, when that became a cheaper metal than brass. They're given to customers by companies and to voters by politicians, as fancy calling cards. Many people wanted luck, especially during the Great Depression, and although they had no monetary value, these talismans, called "Good Luck Coins" by the public, were carried on the person, placed in the change pockets of wallets or purses, or thrown into change drawers by the folks who got them. I have collected such exonumia for more than 50 years and this week i am adding a new batch of them, with commentary, to the Lucky W Amulet Archive.

Find the updated page now at:
https://www.luckymojo.com/goodluckcoinsandtokens.html

The Lucky W Amulet Archive is a folkloric resource that contains hundreds of interlinked pages describing and illustrating amulets, talismans, lucky charms, and good luck pieces from all around the world and from all eras of history. It is a work in progress, and new pages are added on a regular basis at http://www.luckymojo.com/luckyw.html

In this installment of "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog," we view a difficult collection of hoodoo beliefs and practices from 1891, compiled by an amateur folklorist whose racism is obvious, but whose information is unique and therefore important in terms of what it offers to modern historians of African-American folk-magic. Sara M. Handy wrote this piece in 1891, and despite its ugliness and errors, it still offers us a good view of the conjure practices of Black Americans in Virginia halfway between the end of slavery in 1865 and America's entry into the First World War in 1917. And, as always, i take care to unpack the antiquated terminology, correct the errors, and offer some insights into the life of the author.

NEGRO SUPERSTITIONS by Sara M. Handy
(Published in 1891)

Find it at:
http://southernspirits.org/Handy-Negro- ... -1891.html

This illustrated and annotated web page describes rural African-American omens, divination, and spell-work in the 19th century. Copies of the original article accompany the text.

The Southern Spirits web site includes material about hoodoo gathered from old books, magazine articles, newspapers, and fragments extracted from novels and short stories, annotated with interpretive and comparative notes. If you are not yet familiar with the public portion of the site, check it out!

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $2.00 per week for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. This week's Patreon sneak-peek page is the "Days of the Week" (Die Tage der Woche") series S-689" by Liebig Beef Extract -- a lovely set of 6 chromolitho trade cards from 1905 that show the symbolism and attributes of the classical deities associated with the seven days of the week. We scanned and cleaned up the images and added a short history of the publisher, plus some genuine occult lore on planetary magic.

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $8.00 per month for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of blues lyrics and hoodoo. This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" we travel back 100 years, to 1923, as i bring you another illustrated song transcription from my collection documenting African-American folk magic through evidence found in early 20th century song lyrics. Hazel Meyers describes the terror she felt when she dreamed about a graveyard and spoke to the gravedigger. Was it "only a dream" or was it a "true dream," a premonition of tragedy to come? As usual, an MP3 audio file is included so that you can sing along as you study the deep links between hoodoo and the blues.

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $8.00 per month for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of blues lyrics and hoodoo. In cataloguing articles for the Lucky W Amulet Archive, i have strayed at times from the intent conveyed by the name "Lucky W" -- for in addition to lucky charms and amulets, i have also included apotropaic or protective talismans, and also religious icons from many of the world's cultures. This week, our luck meanders into Roman Catholic veneration of one of the most beautiful apparitions of the Virgin Mary, namely, Our Lady of Charity of Cobre, Cuba. Here is an article i wrote in the year 2000, but never published on my web site, now fully illustrated, an offering of respect to La Cachita, Nuestra Senora de la Caridad del Cobre.

We made it! We have finished 15 weeks of work on the Lucky Charms trading cards issued by Wills's Cigarettes in 1923. Tonight we completed the final five web pages to complete our colourful and educational set of amulets and talismans from around the world. This was a project 30 years in the making, and we are grateful that we got shoved into completing it by my patient and persistent Patreon supporters. They will receive a preview of this installment, featuring our detailed scanning, cleanup, text transcriptions, and annotations of all 50 of the classic 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt. These full-colour trading cards comprise a collection of some of the best magical charms in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum. I have transcribed, coded, and annotated our ninth set of five of the 38 ancient talisman texts, in addition to the set of 12 astrological talismans we finished earlier this summer. Siva has scanned and cleaned up all of the stippled chromolithographic images. As we work on each card, i also write commentaries on these miniature masterpieces and cross-link them to other Lucky Mojo pages on world-wide folk magic. The finished cigarette cards are only available for Patreon members right now -- but next year, thanks to their financial support, the full collection of 50 web pages of Zodiac amulets and Lucky Charms, plus an introduction to the set, will open to the public for permanent display at the Lucky W Amulet Archive.

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $8.00 per month for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week. In cataloguing articles for the Lucky W Amulet Archive, i have strayed at times from the intent conveyed by the name "Lucky W" -- for in addition to lucky charms and amulets, i have also included apotropaic or protective talismans, and also religious icons from many of the world's cultures. This week i am presenting one of the best known venerational images of the Roman Catholic faith, Maria Dolorosa del Monte Calvario. Here is an article i wrote in 2006, never before published on my web site, now fully illustrated, that tells the story of this beautiful depiction of Mary and how it entered the folk religions of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Find the page now at:

The Lucky W Amulet Archive is a folkloric resource that contains hundreds of interlinked pages describing and illustrating amulets, talismans, lucky charms, and good luck pieces from all around the world and from all eras of history. It is a work in progress, and new pages are added on a regular basis at http://www.luckymojo.com/luckyw.html

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons are getting a one-year Patreon exclusive illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about African-American folk magic. Walter Davis, who was born in Grenada, Mississippi, in 1911 or 1912, became a popular singer, songwriter, and piano player in Saint Louis and recorded more than 150 songs in his 23-year music career. This piece, "Root Man Blues," is a funny double entendre song about a travelling root doctor and the woman who just can't turn loose of his root. I have transcribed the lyrics, set forth an explanation of what they mean, and with my husband's help, this has been accompanied by photos, a label shot, and an MP3 audio file to delight my patrons, who have a one year exclusive on this new web page, in gratitude for their financial support of my work as a documentarian of folklore, folk magic, and fortune telling.

Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo: ROOT MAN BLUES (Tier 3 NOVEMBER 7th, 2024)

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons are getting a one-year Patreon exclusive -- and illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about African-American folk magic. Thomas A. Dorsey, well known as "The Father of Gospel Music" had an earlier career as Georgia Tom Dorsey, a blues singer, composer, and pianist. As Thomas A. Dorsey he wrote inspirational songs like "Take My Hand, Precious Lord," but as Georgia Tom he wrote some of the cleverest double entendre blues ever recorded, songs in which surprisingly sexual imagery was thinly veiled or "coded" in innocent-seeming metaphors. This week's song, the original version of "Root Man Blues" from 1931, is presented in the form of a dialogue between Georgia Tom as a hoodoo root doctor and his female client, voiced by the mysteriously pseudonymous singer Kansas City Kitty. Georgia Tom tries to sell Kitty a Georgia Jumpin' Root, but she turns it down and selects a Louisiana Crooked Root to chew instead. I have transcribed the lyrics, set forth an explanation of what they really mean, and prepared extensive (and i mean EXTENSIVE!) side-notes concerning the true identity of Kansas City Kitty. With my husband nagasiva's help, the article is accompanied by photos, a label shot, and an MP3 audio file so you can sing along. This project is being previewed by my patrons, who have a one year exclusive on every week's new web page, in gratitude for their financial support of my work as a documentarian of folklore, folk magic, and fortune telling.

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons are getting a one-year Patreon exclusive -- an illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about African-American folk magic. All of you (probably) know what it means to be jinxed -- but did you know that the first time this phrase appeared in a blues song was in 1924? Here is William Henry "Papa Charlie" Jackson to tell you all about the jinx and why he is leaving town with the "Salt Lake City Blues." Thanks to the help of my husband nagasiva, the article is accompanied by three photos of the man himself, a label shot, and an MP3 audio file so you can sing along.

Today i am bringing you one of my favourite singers and guitarists, Brownie McGhee from Tennessee, who recorded a fine blues song about his lover's "Secret Mojo" in 1947, the year that i was born. Thanks to the help of my husband nagasiva, this article is accompanied by two portrait photos, two label shots, and an MP3 audio file so you can sing along, and i have also written a short biography of McGhee, whom it was my pleasure to see both in concerts and in coffee houses many times. This project is being previewed by my patrons, who have a one year exclusive on every week's new web page, in gratitude for their financial support of my work as a documentarian of folklore, folk magic, and fortune telling.

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons are getting an illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about African-American rootwork. Today i offer you a treat from 1927, with Martha Copeland singing, Porter Grainger on piano, and the great Bob Fuller on clarinet, in a little number they called "Shootin' Star Blues." Martha is troubled by many omens and signs that foretell bad and good luck, so Grainger and Fuller accompany her with a melody that shifts from minor to major and includes some funny -- and spooky -- musical references. Thanks to the help of my husband nagasiva, this article is accompanied by three portrait photos, a label shot, and an MP3 audio file so you can sing along. I have also written short biographies of Copeland, Grainger, and Fuller, for those who love the musical end of things as much as the education in hoodoo. This project is being previewed by my patrons, who have a one year exclusive on every week's new web page, in gratitude for their financial support of my work as a documentarian of folklore, folk magic, and fortune telling.

The secret URLs for Patrons-only pages at all of my sites -- Lucky Mojo Hoodoo, Lucky Mojo Blues, Lucky W Amulet Archive, Mystic Tea Room, Your Wate and Fate -- are sent to Patrons via email on the 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th of every month. By the time they open to the public, one year later, they may be edited, enhanced, or combined together into larger pages, and the Patreon URLs may be replaced with new, public URLs.

I think that nagasiva is in touch with you in Facebook. You and i are already Friends on Facebook and he just accepted your friend request. SUCCESS! And thank you for the financial support.

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $8.00 per month for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. After a year, these pages are given to the public to read for free. This week "The 1965 Regency Fortune Cup" is due for release!

Image

In keeping with the Winter theme of warm tea and tea-leaf reading, this week's offering is a genuine rarity, the Snowhite Regency Fortune Cup containing 52 playing cards and made by the Johnson Brothers Pottery of England for an extremely elusive couple named Verna A. and John W. Meredith, who copyrighted the cup in the U.S.A. and promptly disappeared. Cartomancy tea cups are not common, but this cup is so hard to find that in all my years of collecting, i have only seen it put up for sale twice, once in 2011 without a saucer, and once in 2017 as a complete cup and saucer set.

The Johnson Brothers pottery was among the world's largest manufacturers of table ware, but they never made another divination cup during the entire run of the company, from 1882 to 2015. My brand-new "Johnson Brothers" pottery company category-page and the heavily illustrated page on "The Fortune Cup" are online now for the public to view.

As winter draws in around us, my thoughts turn to hot tea, cookies, and the cozy tea rooms of yesteryear. Today i return with pleasure to Vintage Tea Rooms by Location -- namely the great state of Maine, USA -- with a gallery of very old postcards, each one accompanied by a descriptive caption. These images are now on display at the Mystic Tea Room web site for every tea lover and tea leaf reader to enjoy!

In June of 2023, thanks to the support of my Patrons, The Mystic Tea Room opened a "Bibliography of Books about Tasseomancy" to the public. That page joined an earlier MTR page on "Tea Company Booklets," which included pamphlets filled with information from tea growers about tea drinking and the tea industry, as well a few that described tea cup reading. This week i present a one-year first glimpse at another aspect of the booklet proposition, namely instructional "Pottery Company Booklets" issued by the china ware companies that manufactured tasseomantic cups. From Alfred Meakin and Aynsley to Wimsatt and Zarka, here are the collectible, colourful, and almost-impossible-to-find pamphlets that once accompanied the lovely astrological, cartomantic, numerological, and symbolic fortune telling cups of yore.

Mutoscope, which began as a maker of coin-operated peep-show films, also provided pin-up and celebrity postcards which were marketed primarily in men's spaces, such as bars, pool halls, tobacconists, and liquor stores. Each Lucky Number card contains 6 digits for lottery play, a slightly risqué or misogynistic joke, and a burlesque cartoon. They sure don't make them like this any more!

Hello everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons are getting an illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about African-American rootwork. Today i offer you a treat from 1937, with Fulton Allen, better known as Blind Boy Fuller, singing and playing his delicate Piedmont style guitar licks on a number called "Stingy Mama," -- and it seems that Fuller is yet another man in search of his wife's hidden mojo hand. Thanks to the help of my husband nagasiva, this article is accompanied by two portrait photos, a label shot, and an MP3 audio file so you can sing along. I have also written a short biography of Fuller, for those who enjoy musical history as much as the education in hoodoo.

Today our conjure documentation comes from 1932, with the husband and wife team of Coot Grant and Kid Sox Wesley Wilson singing about the power of a mojo hand, and how the inadvertent touch of a lover can cut off its luck. I have written short biographies of the couple, for those who enjoy musical history alongside their education in hoodoo, and thanks to the help of my husband nagasiva, the bio is accompanied by a portrait photo, two label shots, and an MP3 audio file so you can sing along. This week's Patreon sneak-peek page consists of a third collection of memories and sketches spanning many years of my life. I never planned to write about myself, but when people ask me questions, i reply, and i save the messages, and the electrons have just piled up on my hard drive over the years. This material has not been formally published as a collection until now. At the present it is intended to be seen by my Patrons only, and it may never reach the public. I dedicate it to Fred Burke and Ignacio Ceja, two long time supporters of my writing.

Hello, everyone, and welcome to "It's All Ephemera"!

In this installment of "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog," we gain wisdom from a collection of hoodoo beliefs and practices published in 1894. The material comes from the memory of Ruby Andrews Moore, the racist granddaughter of a white enslaver -- and despite the author's ugly attitude, it provides us with a clear view of the conjure beliefs of Black Americans in the Georgia Sea Islands before the Civil War. As always, i take care to unpack the antiquated terminology, correct any errors, and offer insights into the life and times of the author.

[PATRONS GET THE SECRET URL IN EMAIL ONE YEAR BEFORE IT OPENS TO THE PUBLIC]

This illustrated and annotated web page describes rural African-American omens, divination, and spell-work in the 19th century. Copies of the original article accompany the text.

The Southern Spirits web site includes material about hoodoo gathered from old books, magazine articles, newspapers, and fragments extracted from novels and short stories, annotated with interpretive and comparative notes. If you are not yet familiar with the public portion of the site, check it out!

"The Dowsing Bibliography at YIPPIE" was first put online in 2010, then thoroughly updated in 2020. Now, after five years of dormancy, it has sprung back to life with a dozen new entries and almost two dozen new graphics, plus much additional information about the books already listed. As a Life Member of the American Society of Dowsers, it is my pleasure to keep my friends and colleagues up-to-date on the literature of dowsing with personal reviews and glam cover shots of everything from my own collection of ultra-rare 19th and 20th century dowsing books to the cutest new dowsing-for-interior-decorators self-published wonder. This is the first time my Patrons have supported the Dowsing series hosted at the Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology, and for their financial assistance, they each receive a one-year Patreon exclusive link to the New! Improved! More Colourful! Dowsing Bibliography -- which will open to the public in 2026.

[PATRONS GET THE SECRET URL IN EMAIL ONE YEAR BEFORE IT OPENS TO THE PUBLIC]

Don't worry, though, all you non-Patron Dowsers -- the 2020 edition of the Dowsing Bibliography is still online at the YIPPIE web site, along with all our other public bibliographies on occult and spiritual topics, at http://yronwode.org

Hello, everyone, and welcome to "It's All Ephemera"!

This week i am making a second sweep (well, actually a fourth sweep) through "The Dowsing Bibliography at YIPPIE." This labour of love was first put online in 2010, then thoroughly updated in 2020. Last week, after five years of dormancy, i brought it back to life with a dozen new entries and almost two dozen new graphics, and this week i am enlarging it one more time, with new books, new cover art, and much additional information about the books and the authors already listed. As a Life Member of the American Society of Dowsers, it is my pleasure to keep my friends and colleagues up-to-date on the literature of dowsing with personal reviews, commentary, and clean cover shots of my own collection -- from ultra-rare 19th and 20th century dowsing books and pamphlets to the cutest new dowsing-for-interior-decorators self-published wonder. This is the second time my Patrons have supported the Dowsing series hosted at the Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology, and for their financial assistance, they each receive a one-year Patreon exclusive link to the New! Improved! More Colourful! Dowsing Bibliography -- which will open to the public in 2026.

Don't worry, though, all you non-Patron Dowsers -- the 2020 edition of the Dowsing Bibliography is still online at the YIPPIE web site, along with all our other public bibliographies on occult and spiritual topics, at http://yronwode.org

"It's All Ephemera" is the over-arching name for my Patreon stream, and within that is the Patreon series i call "A Hoodoo Hand," which consists of new chapters of "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice," my massive and free online book about African American folk magic. After a year for my Patrons to enjoy, these chapters are made public for all to read. On this newly-released web page -- "Planetary Rulerships of Herbs, Roots, Seeds, and Flowers" -- we take "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice in Progress" into orbit with a series of tables that connect the Seven Sacred Planets with the down-to-earth flowers, herbs, seeds, and roots that share their energy. When you learn to employ herbs of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn on their special days of the week, they will lift your rootwork into the stratosphere.

Please consider supporting me on Patreon for as little as $8.00 per month for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, so i can keep on working on "It's All Ephemera!"

Thank you, Patrons, for making this possible.

Hello everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

This week in "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" my Patrons are getting an illustrated and annotated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics about African-American rootwork. Today our conjure documentation comes from a 1936 recording by Robert Johnson, in which he sings and plays guitar on a composition of his own that describes how he stole money from a woman's nation sack. I have written a short biography of Johnson, for those who enjoy musical history alongside their education in hoodoo, and thanks to the help of my husband nagasiva, the bio is accompanied by a portrait photo, two label shots, an MP3 audio file so you can sing along. This project is being previewed by my patrons, who have a one year exclusive on every week's new web page, in gratitude for their financial support of my work as a documentarian of folklore, folk magic, and fortune telling.

After a year for my Patrons to enjoy, this material will be linked from the public-facing pages of the Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo site. In the meantime, my Patrons also have access to exclusive threads at the Lucky Mojo Forum and participate in discussions with me about my ongoing publications.

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $8.00 per month for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to write a new web page every week on the history of folk magic and divination. This week we release "The Dream Book Bibliography, Part One at YIPPIE."

Image

This is the first episode in what we can all only assume will be my stab at a creating a lushly illustrated Dream Book cover gallery and annotated bibliography series, hosted at The Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology. The books come from my collection, the scanning and cleanup of the art have been a joint project spearheaded with my husband nagasiva, and the write-ups of the books are my own take on what makes each title different from another. This is a one-year Patreon exclusive for those who financially support my writing and research. I greatly appreciate the support, because no one is paying much for popular culture academia projects these days except you, my dear friends, fans, and fellow-travellers. When AI takes over the world and history becomes fiction, you can stand proud and tell your grandchildren, "I sent cat and nagasiva $8.00 per month to scan and catalogue dream books." And your grandkids will reply, "What's a dream book, Grandy?" And you will reply, "Well, Kiddo, i'm not really sure anymore. It was something people made 'way, way back, before before.'"

Find it now at:
https://www.yronwode.org/dream-book-bibliography.html

The YIPPIE web site includes bibliographies on an array of occult and spiritual topics currently open to the public, for the aid of scholars, researchers, and students at http://yronwode.org

Hello, everyone, and welcome to "It's All Ephemera"!

Third time's a charm! This is my third update of "The Dowsing Bibliography at YIPPIE" this year, and it will not be the last. I am STOKED on this project and find it difficult to set aside. The first pass was put online in 2010, and it was thoroughly updated in 2020. Last month after five years of dormancy, i brought it back to life with a dozen new entries and almost two dozen new graphics, and earlier this month i added more new books, new cover art, and new information about the books and the authors already listed. But now the train has left the yard and we are getting up to speed! Stick your head out the window, watch the drivers roll. I have got some raries for you this time, and you are gonna love 'em! As a Life Member of the American Society of Dowsers, i am thrilled to bring you personal reviews, commentary, and clean cover shots of my own collection -- from ultra-rare 19th and 20th century dowsing books and pamphlets to the latest new self-published woo-woo wonder. This is the third time my Patrons have supported the Dowsing series hosted at the Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology, and for their financial assistance, they each receive a one-year Patreon exclusive link to the New! Improved! More Colourful! Dowsing Bibliography -- which will open to the public in 2026.

Thanks to my Patrons, who contribute as little as $8.00 per month for an exclusive one-year sneak-peek behind the scenes, i am able to regularly write new web pages on the history of African-American folk magic. This week my Patrons have funded an episode of Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo for the public -- an illustrated transcription from my collection of 20th century blues lyrics in which the topic is African-American folk magic. It's 1924 -- 100 years ago -- and Gertrude "Ma" Rainey was singing about her trip to New Orleans to find "that lucky rock," the magical ear bone of a Drumfish. As usual, an MP3 audio file is included so that you can sing along as you study the amazing links between hoodoo and the blues.

Hello, everyone, and welcome to "It's All Ephemera"!

And the hits just keep on happening! This is my fourth update of "The Dowsing Bibliography at YIPPIE" this year, and it will not be the last. I am deep, deep into this project and there is so much more dowsing history to discover, uncover, and recover. The first pass was put online in 2010, and it was thoroughly updated in 2020. In February, after five years of dormancy, i got back to work on it, and since then i have been adding new books, new cover art, and new information about the books and the authors already listed. This week i am showcasing some oldies and introducing some recent titles. As a Life Member of the American Society of Dowsers, it is my pleasure to bring you personal reviews, commentary, and clean cover shots from my own collection -- including the most ultra-rare 19th and 20th century dowsing books and pamphlets and the most useless self-published paper-wasters of the past decade. This is the fourth time my Patrons have supported the Dowsing series hosted at the Yronwode Institution for the Preservation and Popularization of Indigenous Ethnomagicology, and for their financial assistance, they each receive a one-year Patreon exclusive link to the New! Improved! More Colourful! Dowsing Bibliography -- which will open to the public in 2026.

This week my Patrons present the world with an illustrated transcription from my collection of 20th century "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo." It's 1931 and Blind Willie McTell -- or rather, William Samuel McTier in his guise as "Georgia Bill" -- was wanderin' 'round Georgia, waiting for those fried pies to get done, searching for his woman's mojo, and trying to avoid them jinx. It was a "Scarey Day" for him, for sure. As usual, an MP3 audio file is included so that you can sing along as you study the deep-felt links between hoodoo and the blues.

Image

This week "The Dream Book Bibliography, Part Two at YIPPIE," takes a long dive down a very specific rabbit-hole, one that will be particularly welcoming to art-spotters and old film buffs. Join me in a throw-back to my fannish days as i unravel the clue-filled linguistic, visual, photographic, and timeline connections between Jean Sothern in "The Mysteries of Myra" (1916), Theda Bara in "The Tiger Woman" (1917), Theda Bara in "Salomé" (1918), Betty Blythe in "Queen of Sheba (1921), and, going the long way around, on to the unnamed artist who painted the cover for "Myra Moore's Dream Book," published in 1921, in Scotland, of all places.

This is a one-year Patreon exclusive for those who financially support my writing and research. I greatly appreciate the support, because no one is paying much for popular culture academia projects these days except you, my dear friends, fans, and fellow-travellers. When AI takes over the world and history becomes fiction, you can stand proud and tell your grandchildren, "I sent cat and nagasiva $8.00 per month to scan and catalogue dream books."
