Hello,

This may have been answered. I have jar lamp with floating wick, first time using a lamp, and I have refilled it maybe 18 times now. When do you replace the herbs?

Hello Brother Christopher,

You can replace the herbs if you find they have burned up or have reduced enough to be noticeable. You wouldn't need to replace them every time you refill your lamp.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

The Guiding Light to Power and Success by Mikhail Strabo, edited by Catherine Yronwode

Use in Magic:
This ground-breaking work was originally sold via ads in Black-owned newspapers, and it opened up a nation-wide conversation on the increasing importance of conjure work with candles. This famous hoodoo grimoire contains more than 50 candle and lamp spells for protection, love, wealth, and luck. Now, with 32 additional illustrated pages by editor catherine yronwode, The Guiding Light is back in print, bigger and better than ever. Chapters include: How to Set Up a Candle Altar, One-Candle Rites with Psalms, Seven-Candle Planetary Rites, Eight-Candle Sacred Octaves, Nine-Candle Catholic Novenas, Ten Ancient Oil Lamp Devotions, Twelve-Candle Zodiacal Rituals, How to Use Seals with Candles, and Candle-Magic Around the World. An inspirational occult classic, it remains a popular source-book to this day.

I recently started working with vegetable oil lamps and I wish to thank Miss Michaele and the late Dr. E. for outlining clear instructions on several different ways to make them. I got Dr. E.'s instructions from the Black Folder article on Rustic Oil Lamps and Miss Michaele's instructions from her 2020 Hoodoo Heritage Festival workshop on Altar Hacks.

Vegetable Oil is so much nicer to my sensitive nose than Kerosene or Lamp Oil. I like that you can make the lamp in a simple glass container and use a simple cotton wick.

I have not yet mastered the art of keeping my vegetable oil lamp going perpetually, but it does burn as long as a candle, with a much gentler flame. The low-tech feel it gives me is ancient and ancestral.

Hi Coastwitch,

It's great you enjoy oil lamp magic, I myself was also inspired by Miss Michaele at the same HHF. I use Sunflower oil instead of vegetable oil, it has become slightly more expensive. I am sure you also played around with adding stones and herbs. They make mason jar lamps if you want to go longer than the jam jar.

Money - 1 coin of each domination, drop of Money Drawing Oil, Alfalfa, Cinnamon sticks.
Protection - Chili Peppers, Hyssop, Tourmaline, and or Tigers Eye, drop of Protection oil
Love - Damina, Cat Nip, Rose Buds, Pink Quarts, Chuparrosa Oil

You can also place copies of Tarot cards under the jars to amp up the power.

Best of luck,
Mr. Christopher

I just listened to the episode about making a conjure lamp and I have an idea.

I want to make a general blessing lamp for a group of people while Jupiter is in Cancer. Would I put their personal concerns (hair) in the well or under/around it like a nest?

In the lamp I was thinking of adding lucky hand, some pyrite, five finger grass, self heal, bay leaves, allspice, devil’s shoestring, and gentian. I want the lamp to bless every aspect of their lives and give it some oomph of that greater benefic energy.
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you

The Mango Witch,

I was taught to make a petition paper and put the personal concerns in that, then pin them to the end of the wick in the lamp.
