Hello all, my rootwork always going well then completely crashes during the eclipse and retrograde. I'm doing hootfoot, work to break communication and keep certain people out of my life as well as my child's. Anything to prevent this?

Planetary influences can definitely mess up your work, and it can make a difference in which sign the event is happening in, the time of the year etc. Some signs may be more affected by these at a given time than others. When this is happing, continues to happen to you, I would seek out an AIRR member who also is an expert in Astrology. This person can help by reading your chart and making a talisman that can be worn to assist you.

I finally have a question for the forum! I am wondering what websites or apps (for android and iphone) readers of AIRR, that do astrology, prefer for natal charts? What are the most accurate? Are some better than others? Do you prefer to have the chart or the birthday to cast your own chart on your own site or app? Or both? I am having a reading soon and I would like to have all the right stuff for my reading

Great question. I use Io Edition by Time Cycles Research for the Mac and i interpret charts verbally while the client records the session. Others use programs like Solar Fire, Astro Gold, Astro Zone, Kepler, and Time Passages to calculate and produce printed and written horoscopes. For horary readings i use Astrolabe's Celeste, an app for the iPhone.

For a quick checkup on someone, i recommend the web site Alabe.com (from the makers of Celeste) for a free chart with limited interpretations. If you can read a chart, it is very fast. If you need interpretation, you can pay for their written-out long version.

As an old-school astrologer i have used canned (pre-written) horoscope software in the past, but find it too limited to be helpful to my clients. These programs work by aspects, houses, and signs, but cannot incorporate (yet) multiple conjunctions (stelliums) or full pattern astrology, nor can they "chase the rulerships" around the chart or calculate the "phantom sign." I am sure that within the next few years they will, but for now an experienced astrologer does a better job than the canned charts.

My book, Astrology for Rootworkers, will perhaps open a few astrological doors for you. It is not about reading charts -- it is about using astrological timing and placements in the practice of hoodoo.

Hello! Something crossed my mind. I am passionated about astrology. However, I do not know my birth time. Can the pendulum offer answers in regard to the details of my chart, such as my Ascendent, Moon and so forward? Can a reading be adjusted to pinpoint my chart in such a manner?

You certainly can try that method to establish the Asendant. Though many of the planetary placements are able to be figured out without the time, due to the location of your birth and day, the Moon and Ascendant require a time of birth. Hello everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!

This week's Patreon sneak-peek page marks our fourth go-round in the rather complex task of scanning and transcribing all 50 of the 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt, commenting on their content, cross-linking them, and uploading the finished pages to the Lucky W Amulet Archive for permanent display. The behind-the scenes prep work supporting this seemingly cute project has become a bit overwhelming, as we decided to tear our earlier templates down and re-make the code, and we also bought a new, and supposedly better, scanner to replace our old one. After getting the new scanner up and running, we realized it was a TERRIBLE scanner. It could not distinguish denim blue from grey-blue or grey, and it perceived darker blue-green as black! Siva had already scanned several cards ahead and had cleaned up one card, front and back, when he showed me his first results -- and i was horrified! All that work -- and an entire new machine -- useless. The damned scanner was visually auto-tuning chromolithographic ink colours to a limited palette range of pre-sets. I hate it! I want to smash it with a hammer! Even a child should not be given a scanner this crappy to use as a pre-school toy! So Siva had to start scanning again, from scratch, while i forged on ahead of him with more text. But without the images, the text is nothing, of course, so we only have one card for our Patrons tonight, and getting it online was stressful and wearisome as Hell. Between that unexpected glitch-and-fix and our ongoing care for the shop cat, Boots, who is convalescing in the downstairs bathroom, we are running behind this week. We hope to get back on track next week. Virgo is now ready for our Patrons to enjoy!

This week's Patreon sneak-peek page marks our fifth dip into the intricate project of scanning and transcribing all 50 of the beautiful 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt, commenting on their content, cross-linking them, and uploading the finished pages to the Lucky W Amulet Archive for permanent display. The preparation that underlies this work is ongoing, but we have put last week's scanner woes behind us and are working at a nice clip now. I have transcribed, coded, and annotated all of the Zodiac talisman texts and Siva is busily cleaning up their scans while i forge ahead into the upcoming 38 texts that describe the gorgeously rendered chromolithographic illustrations that comprise the bulk of the card set of precious amulets from the British Museum.

This week's Patreon sneak-peek page presents our sixth pass through the scanning, cleanup, and text transcriptions of all 50 of the resplendent 1923 "Wills's Lucky Charms" cigarette cards by William Thomas Pavitt and Kate Pitt Pavitt depicting a selected set of precious amulets from the British Museum. This week i have transcribed, coded, and annotated the final three Zodiac talisman texts and Siva has scanned and cleaned up the images. As we work on each card, we are also cross-linking these miniature chromolithographic masterpieces to other Lucky Mojo pages on astrological folk magic. The finished cigarette cards are available for Patreon members now -- and next year the entire set will open to the public for permanent display at the Lucky W Amulet Archive. I have always burned New Moon candles on the first or second day of the moon. However, recently I watched a video which mentioned it is best to wait a few days after the New Moon, when the moon is actually visible. Is this true? Can you burn candles during the first couple days of a New Moon or is it best to wait several days until it is visible? Please advise. Thank you in advance.

The answer is "yes" to both. The issue is that if you ask different readers, you will get different responses. Also, some spells specifically say to start this on the new moon. Some AIRR members offer new moon candle services where they set candles for clients on the new moon. Some people will start the work as it grows to bring to them, or to enhance things, such as as the moon grows may my money grow.

The first visible crescent is generally the third day after the Dark Moon. In traditional Middle Eastern cultures, as well as among some Native American tribes, this is the New Moon. It is also sacred to the Hindu god Siva, who uses the New Moon crescent as an ornament in his hair. See also the tarot card of the 2 of Swords for what it looks like.

I was taught not to do work on an Eclipse. Work started prior can be continued work after is fine. Work before would be long standing work like a candle that was set prior to the astrological event.

Doing work by astrology is a strong way to do work, you can learn a lot from Miss Cat's book Astrology for Rootworkers

Depending on the other astrological aspects, you may want to not start work a week or a few days before the event. For example, this month Mercury goes retrograde right after the eclipse. This is not a good time to start new work, rather to continue the work you had already begun. However, if it is an emergency, I would do the work and just expect the results may not be exact, and I will likely repeat the work when the eclipse and retrograde season is over.

Hi All.

I have a friend who is a psychic. She is a great psychic and good friend. We went to a spiritual shop yesterday to shop. She warned me to not do ANYTHING until the eclipses are over. She took it as an insult when I joked she was being OCD about it.

She is very negative with eclipses, even hides her crystals in the dark during them, doesn't do candles or anything because she believes if anyone does magic it will backfire and thus pushes this mindset on to others.

However, in years past, I have done candles during an eclipse. I feel like eclipse energy is extra potent and it all boils down to intention.

I am a Pisces with planets in Pisces. This month keeps building towards a grand stellium in Pisces. I would be an idiot not to utilize this energy.

What are your thoughts?

Do you advise to never do any magic during the months of an eclipse or do you believe in utilizing eclipse energy?

As you are a mutable Pisces, i would think you would have learned a mutable sign way of understanding the concept of "different strokes for different folks." Your friend and you may disagree and still remain friends.

As a watery Pisces, i would think that you would have been born with an innate sense of compassion for all sentient beings. You may disagree with your friend but not be rude about it ... i would hope.

I personally decline to begin any magical work during an eclipse. But what do i know? -- i am a fixed TAURUS and i don't let anyone disrespect my opinions, ever. So if i were your friend and you "joked" that i "was being OCD about it" to not work during eclipses, i would take it as an insult, unkind, uncalled for, and simply an attempt to shame me by "jokingly" (not!) labelling me with a mental illness diagnosis.

Lucky for you, i have mutable Gemini rising, so it is my FIRM TAUREAN OPINION that accommodating non-dogmatic diversity of opinion is a charmingly GEMINI way to preserve a friendship.

Therefore, since at the current moment Venus, the ruler of my natal Taurus, is ugly-retrograde in war-like Aries and also conjunct Mercury, the ruler of verbal Gemini, in hot-headed Aries, i would favour you with a tinkling Mercurial laugh and a Venusian shake of my curly locks, and then "lightheatedly" tell you to "fuck off and die."

Yes, it actually a common belief among astrologers that to undertake a journey or to begin a new project during an eclipse means you will have to do it over again. Finishing old projects is okay during the eclipse because the work was started beforehand. And an eclipse is always of short duration -- not a matter of weeks or months but the time it takes the Moon to get into orb with the Sun. And it wears off rapidly too.

I also do not begin new work when the Moon is void of course. This is an old farmer's and gardener's belief as well as a magical belief.

I cover eclipse, void-of-course times, and also the question of casting spells during retrogrades, in my book "Astrology for Rootworkers." You might enjoy it.

The Full Moon Lunar Eclipse Virgo is this week on March 13th. The New Moon Solar Eclipse Aries is March 29th.

Question: Should I wait until March 31st or April 7th to do my work -or will the eclipses still have an effect- and in turn would it be better to wait all the way until the April 27 New Moon Taurus to do magic work and candles?

Generally speaking, I advise avoiding major magical works (especially for positive manifestation outcomes) during eclipse season, and that's based on previous experiences and outcomes, not just belief or aesthetics. In the case you are proposing, I would advise extending your time frame to April 27 (New Moon in Taurus) to do your work, if the outcomes you are hoping for are growth-oriented or personally beneficial.

Eclipses are, indeed, energetic, but that energy is unpredictable, unstable, and rarely suited to lasting positive outcomes. YMMV, of course. Many practitioners (myself included) advise only contemplative work during the eclipse itself--this may include mantra work (eclipses are considered to amplify mantras recited during the time of the eclipse itself), meditation, etc.

This is the envelope for Myra Kingsley's 1935 horoscope for any Aries person born on April 8th of any year. Inside is an 11 x 17 inch sheet of paper, printed on both sides, folded down to make a 4-page 8 1/2 x 11 pamphlet, and then folded down again to make a 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 piece that fits inside the envelope. When unfolded, page 1 gives the birth date and one paragraph of predictions for clients born on April 8th with respect to trouble in financial matters -- this was during the Depression -- and hope for some "business advances" by the end of the year. The rest of the page gives lucky and unlucky days for the year, as well as "good years" and "bad years." 1938 would be a bad year, and the first good year would be 1940. 1945 would be a year of change, 1948 would be a good year, and 1952 would bring bad changes. Pages 2 and 3 are general Sun-sign readings for Aries. Page 4 contains Aries keywords and correspondences, nations and cities founded with the Sun in Aries, and compatible signs. An idealized and prettily retouched photo of Myra Kingsley, a beautiful white woman with a swan-like neck and blonde curls piled high on her head, accompanies a brief bio, in which it is noted that she is "a member of a prominent New York family, a college woman of unusual talent who has travelled widely throughout the world studying astrology." Her office was at 232 Madison Avenue, New York City, New York. The booklet was copyright 1935 M.K. and the envelope bore the name of the printer Engel - van Wiseman, Inc., New York, N.Y. Almira Kingsley, a lovely Libra, was born on October 1st, 1897, to Susan May (called Susie" or "Mary") Buek and William Morgan Kingsley. The couple divorced in 1921. In 1914, Mary, a Theosophist, had taken Myra to the noted astrologer Evangeline Adams, who predicted that she would develop her musical talent, but would find true fame as an astrologer. Myra studied music and also trained with the San Francisco astrologer Milton P. Ropp. By 1925 she was a professional astrologer. She married in 1921 to George Houston and divorced him in 1927. She then lived with her mother in a Berkeley house custom-designed by the famous architect Bernard Maybeck. When Evangeline Adams died in 1932, the columnist Lucius Beebe wrote, "The successor to Evangeline Adams as New York's court astrologer is Myra Kingsley, and the great world accepts her in this high office." In 1934 the New York Times announced her marriage to Howard L. Taylor, "Musical Manager;" in 1936 they lived at 136 E. 67th St. in New York City. They later divorced, with no children. Kingsley was by then a well-known celebrity astrologer, with a Monday-through-Friday radio show on the Mutual Broadcasting Network. Articles and photo spreads about her appeared in magazines throughout the late 1930s. She moved back to California in 1940 to live with her mother in Berkeley until her mother's death in the early 1940s. She then returned to New York. In 1951 Duell, Sloan and Pearce published her 240 page book "Outrageous Fortune: How I Practice Astrology." She died in Florida on November 20th, 1996 at the age of 99. (Photo by Nagasiva Yronwode.)
