Most evidential mediums do not require divination tools to communicate with the dead for the client, although some do use tools such as a crystal ball, palm-stone, scrying water, flame, incense, or perfumes to release their minds into a trance state.

They may also forbid the use of any tools during a reading. In particular, they may feel that using pendulums, playing cards, tarot cards, oracle cards, table rapping, or spirit boards in order to gather details about the deceased or to engage the deceased in conversation by means of such tools should disqualify their members from being called evidential mediums.
