Hii, I have a doubt

Unread post by breakthoven » Sun Dec 14, 2025 5:29 am

Hi everyone — I’m new here and I’d like to ask something respectfully. I’m white and from Spain, and I’m very interested in learning Hoodoo. Is it appropriate for someone like me to study or practice Hoodoo? If so, how can I begin in a respectful and responsible way?
Thank you in advance <3

Hi, welcome to the luckymojo forum! I'm white and I'm from Romania, so yes, it's definitely appropriate to learn Hoodoo! This website offers plenty of resources, what's important is to comprehend the historical and social context that shapes the practice of Hoodoo which, for the start, is not a hierarchical religion, but African-American folk-magic mingled with European and Native American influences.

Miss Cat's a great teacher and author. These articles are free (and informative nonetheless):

Additionally, I highly recommend ordering the books required for the Hoodoo Correspondence course (they stand as the basis of comprehending hoodoo and its nuances). I'm so fond of "Paper in my shoe", it's practical, affordable and, most importantly, easy to grasp for an European practitioner born outside the tradition. Look up to Hoodo Herb Magic as well, because there are numerous curios and herbs easily traced in the Old Continent.

Exactly as stated above. What's important is to understand and respect the origins and history, as with any practice. Id be surprised at anyone here or elsewhere gatekeeping the practice.

breakthoven ,

A respectful and responsible way is to learn it from the practice's true roots, not from social media sensationalists or books based on a person's personal feelings rather than the true tradition.

There is no initiation, no gatekeeping; individuals can learn as they wish, guided by their teachers and by the immersion in authentic teaching available. Often, when people ask about a respectful and responsible way, they mean it in a way that avoids cultural appropriation and adds a modern social norm to a long-standing practice.

In reality, Hoodoo has been practiced in the Americas for hundreds of years; it is a practice that reflects beliefs that merged in the United States from African, European, Asian, Chinese, Native American, Jewish, and Latin cultures. The practitioners brought their traditions and merged them with the work they learned from the locals. You will notice regional differences; for example, the East and West coasts, with larger Asian communities, may have more of that flair than the Bible Belt, which is primarily Protestant. The work has been practiced by many people, including White, Black, Asian, and Latino people, throughout history without a preconceived notion of appropriation.
