Hi Everyone,

I am planing on doing a breakup spell, I have the breakup and confusion oils and everything else i want to put in a bottle which will be prayed over and shaken every once in a while. I was just wondering, I am in the country right now and there are dead wasps here everywhere, would it make sense to put a few dead wasps in the bottle as well? I am hoping it might poison their relationship or something like that. I just wanted to make sure that a wasp doesn't have any other properties that wouldn't be beneficial to my cause. I think using the wasps are fine. Using dead bugs such as spiders, red ants, roaches, etc are okay to use. Let us know how it goes.

That is far, far out of our range of help here, Steve 854 -- this forum is about African American Southern style conjure, rootwork, and hoodoo. You'll need to go find some Chinese mages -- or, at the least a book about ancient Chinese magic. Good luck.

Hey all, first post, anyway I just bought a bottle of Jack Daniels whiskey for soaking herbs. I figured it should be American whiskey because there were some Irish one's and I wasn't too sure how my devi's shoe string would like that. Anyway but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about what I should soak in it. I've heard of a whole bunch of different herbs soaked in whiskey from devil's shoe string to herbs to enhance my "nature." Let me know what herbs work best for you and if I have to use the whole bottle or I can just put them in baby food jars for soaking.

Well, it's not just a question of throwing herbs in -- it really depends on your objectives. Some herbs and roots are used for protection, some for personal strength, some for sexuality, some for money-luck.

Do you have a copy of "Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic"? If so, you can look in the back for lists of herbs by the conditions which they are emplyed to address.

Also, if you see the page on edible herbs in the hoodoo tradition (part of the Hoodoo Foods and Conjure Cook-Off area of the site), you can see a list of edible herbs that are amenable to soaking in whiskey for the making of tonics. The page is here:

Dear Friends,

I am interested in purchasing some herbs from LM like alfalfa and cinnamon powder...but in the descriptions it says that they are to be sprinkled or carried on the person in a little bag. Does that mean that burning them or mixing them with incense powder is inappropriate? Does the smoke not have the same effect as the herb when it is intact, or is the symbolism of burning them just plain wrong?

How you choose to use the herbs would depend on how you work. They can be carried, brewed for bathing (and in some cases to drink as tea or used in cooking), extracted in alcohol, added to oils, burned as incense, and ground to powder for use in sachets.

Greetings to everyone!

Okay, so I am going to my hometown in the South to visit family this coming weekend. I was supposed to have a business meeting on the West Coast, but since it is a holiday for us; I will not be available because it is important for me to spend holidays with family.

The business professional I was to meet on the West Coast has asked if she could fly to the South so she can get to know me better, and work on a prospective humanitarian project for families with children whom have special needs. I was stunned that she would would fly out from New York just to meet with me, and for her to change her plans and follow me to the South just baffles my mind. I am so honored and grateful.

Here is my deal: Being a graduate of Patisserie School, and knowing her weakness for Red Velvet Cake; I am going to bake her one. She will be staying at a hotel near my parent's house for four nights. We will only discuss business one of those five days that she in town.

What can I add to the Red Velvet Cake that would give it some "OOMPH" and also, does anyone have an amazing Red Velvet Cake Recipe to share? I have a tested and tried one that I use all the time, but I like to venture out sometimes.

One of the herbs I usually put in my baked goods is Cardomom, which is a love herb, and I am going to go through Cat's book on herbs to find a list of edible; yet powerful ingredients to add to the recipe.

Any other ideas of things I can use during her four nights stay. I need her to offer my company a business contract.

I am all ears, dear friends!

Besides selecting edible herbs that fit your purpose, pray over each individual herb as it goes into the mix and make sure it is set for your working.

I once saw a trick that may be of use to you. A young lady I knew was baking some cookies and she took her sugar placed it in a bowl and stirred it with a long stick of Licorice while she prayed over it. She prayed to get someone to be sweet to her proposal and to favor her. She then added her sugar (without the Licorice stick).

I'd write the name of your future collegue on one side of the Licorice stick and your command on the other as you use it to stir the sugar, or mix.

You can try that and see how it works out.

Make sure to dress yourself with some oils before heading out to meet her!

This is a type of container spell, and, as such, is more often worked inside an apple or onion. Devi is right -- you are pushing the laws of sceince by using a whole sock. Less is more.

Isis...I applaud you for working your first spell. Here are a few plants that are easy to grow: ferns (lady fern), Philodendrons, Spider Plants, Dieffenbachia or Peace Lilies. Also, you should consider the zone you live in as well when growing plants. Although these plants are virtually easy to grow and maintain. Good Luck in your spell work.

Two things I was planning to do would be to make a hair rub with nine devil shoe strings tied with nine knots of white string as a hair rub for added luck and one with damiana for love. OH and one with ginseng (sang root) to make a male tonic.

Hello, this will seem like a novice question, it may have been answered in cat's book (on the way from amazon), I have used Hoodoo items for years, from LM and Karma Zain. Even done some of my own, I have an altar to my Yemaya which she always works!

Here is my question...and this is so novice.....but where does Hoodoo believe the magic comes from in the plants? Perhaps spirits in the plants. That is my question. Why does Hoodoo believe herbs work? What makes them work I mean? What in the herbs or plants?

I think that you will find a variation in response to this question. You are pretty much asking Why is it believed that herbs and roots will assist in conjure. Well my answer is simple and my own opinion.

They work because of their basic Natural properties.

A chili pepper is HOT and uncomfortable so therefore it has the energy within it,(when put in the proper direction), to cause discomfort and quick movements, and fast reactions to elevate the effects.

Lavender has a pleasant scent and natural calming quality to it. Have you ever just walked up to a Lavender plant, picked a flower and smelled it? How did the scent make you feel? Lavender is good in love and relaxation matters because it Naturally when in contact with it stimulates your senses to these feelings.

I could go ON and ON. .lol It's relatively simple and practical. This also goes for personal concerns of your targets as well. Semen works well in matters of sex and love because one: it is a biological immediate connection to the target, and two: semen itself is a product of the sex act and love is often tied into having sex.

It all connects and herbs and roots, personal concerns and candles ect. anything that you use to help focus your intent. They have natural qualities that stimulate the senses and natural connections to the intent you aspire to.

Not to mention Centuries of practice, wisdom and experience with these items used in all different methods of spell craft that in general have been said to have similar effects and results .

We're working with the spirit of the plant, and getting it to work for us. Today some more modern-minded people may prefer to look at it as tapping into the energy &/or natural resonances of the plant and putting that to work for you.

However conjure is a spirit-working tradition, so we tend to treat things as if they are alive (because they are), and ask them to help us out just as if they were a person.

That's why, for example, you can't just dump a bunch of herbs into a bag and have a real working mojo hand- there's an art and skill to being able to call to all the spirits, then wake and energize them convincing them to work for your specific goal.

"Tapping into" the natural properties and energies of the plants IS utilizing it's spirit. As well as recognizing each plants obvious qualities and effects on the senses of spirit, body and mind. It's in that recognition that in the past and today we are able to best choose the plants that are properly associated with our intent.

Regarding where to store "extra" herbs and roots that are not in use --

I have colored boxes according to their purpose. Red boxes (love items), Green boxes (money items), Yellow boxes (Career/Success items) so forth, so on... , I keep them in various locations that only I know. I keep candles in separate storage boxes.

I store all of my "curios" either on top of my altar, underneath my altar, or on the wood shelf next to my altar. I am lucky enough to have a extra, small room for my wife and I's altar spaces, extra altars, bookshelves and cabinets. It is wonderful. I always keep any High John products on top of my altar, because I feel comfortable and content placing them there. Do what feels good for YOU!

I store my supplies on and under my altars (in drawers), and in decorative boxes and jars on my bookshelves near each altar. Because i run a conjure shop, i no longer keep a separate stash of herbs -- i just grab them from the shop as needed -- but when i did not run a shop, i kept the herbs in small matching jars, each nicely labelled. The bottles of oil i sometimes kept on top of their relevant altars, as images on the oils helped me focus on the work of those altars. I am sort of an altar-building nut -- i have lots of 'em.

I know it's not for sale from LM for obvious reasons, but I have a question about using gunpowder. If anyone knows, is it safe to use in a vinegar break up jar that will be shaken daily? I'd rather not blow up my house!

And for the record, I'd be using a small pinch, no more.

Also would it be effective in a honey jar to convince someone to give me a job. It's an old manager that at a club I used to dance in and now I'd like to see about getting a bartending job there, however our working relationship was often rocky due to his 'habit' and mood swings from them, so it will be a commanding/controlling type of honey jar. Honey jar will not be shaken, though.

(and my apologies to Miss Cat if this crosses the LM products only line, just trying to get answers and fairly quickly about the powder)

I would not use the gun powder in the honey jar for the job--it has an inflamming effect--that is, it makes your work hotter but it sounds like you and this guy don't need inflammatory ingredients added to the mix of y'all's relationship, stick to the commanding herbs, roots, and curios and make sure you add a pinch of five finger grass for favor granting.
I don't know about gun powder in vinegar--when I use gunpowder in my break up work I make a "dry" bottle.

Thank you, Miss Bri. I did find out from someone else who has used vinegar and gunpowder together that the acidity of the vinegar renders the gunpowder safe on the mundane plane, but doesn't affect it magicially.

And yes, there doesn't need to be any added friction with this manager/owner. He's volatile enough on his own! *lol* But I wasn't sure if the gunpowder could be used to blast through any obstacles. I'll just leave it out. Got enough road-opening work and work on the eventual ex that I can definitely use it for!

Hello all,

I am preparing an order for some LM Road Opener products - have been feeling a bit blocked lately.
I will also be asking the MISC to back me up with setting a Road Opener candle there for me.

So far I am going to order the LM Road Opener oil, wash crystals, and probably the incense (once I double-check the Australian Customs rules on it

- if it's a no go, then the sachet powder instead.)
My aim here is to wash myself and my home thoroughly, plus use either incense or sachet powder to follow-up, and work daily orange candles dressed in Road Opener oil for as long as it takes to see a change....

OK so here is my question: what is the true abre camino herb known as? I would like to get some to roll my candles in, but the information I have found on the web is conflicting. So far I have seen different sources stating that it is :
- Eupatorium villosum / Florida Thoroughwort
- Boneset a.k.a. Thoroughwort
- Wild Sage
- Quassia
- Agueweed
I have checked these out in Miss Cat's HH&RM & also Herb-Magic.com but none of them sound right, as in their uses in hoodoo do not accord with the purpose of abre camino as far as I can tell.

Please can anyone tell me what I should be ordering to roll the road-opener candles in? Thank you very much.

So you mean you are looking for something to burn with the orange candles while waiting for the Lucky Mojo Road Opner products? I'm assuming that the case because it wouldn't make sense for you to want to rub additional herbs on the LM Road Opener products because those are already prepared. I don't think you need to add anything if you are already dressing the candle with the Road opener oil simply because the oil already has the Road Opener herbs in it. I think I read somewhere on the Lucky mojo pages that you can dust the LM satchet powder on a candle also but I think cat called it "double-dressing".

Why not oder some Lemon Balm or Lemon Grass, if you have to dress your candles with an herb. HHRM has the Lemon Grass listed as one of the ingredients in the Van Van, the Chinese Wash and the Hindu Grass. Seems it would clear away any negativity and clear out any messes that may be blocking you. In fact, i think Lemon is used in a lot of clearing and protective work. I would think that would reinforce the Road Opener instead of adding Road Opener to Road Opener.

I see what you're saying about just using the oil - I have always oiled my candles and then rolled them in herbs that complement the purpose, to give it some oomph. (You were spot on too, I see that Miss Cat did call it double-dressing

) So I guess I don't HAVE to, I just prefer to work that way.

So yes I was looking for something to "double dress" the orange candles after applying the LM Road Opener oil. I guess I could use the sachet powder, as mentioned in that page. I just really like using the pure herbs, and a road-opener herb seemed like the obvious choice... if only I could find it!

Abre camino herb is used primarily is Latin American folk magics. There are other formulas that open the road that are more traditionally North American, and I believe that LM's Road Opener uses these as they primarily use traditional conjure formulas, as opposed to ones coming from Santeria, Cuanderismo, etc. The Abre Camino herb is not cassia, boneset, sage or agueweed, and it is endangered in Florida, though still fairly plentiful in Puerto Rico, from what I understand.

If you buy the Road Opener products, they will include all the various herbs that are appropriate to your needs, so you can just dress your candle in the Road Opener oil and be fine. However, if you really wish to roll it in some herbs, I would use lemongrass.

There is no substitute for a Bat's eye, although you will find stores that carry a variety of faked-up things they call Bat's eyes. There is also no one Latin name for a Bat's eye, since there are many species of Bats, each species with its own Latin name.

The use of the eye of a Bat in European folk magic derives from the idea that although Bats have poor eyesight ("blind as a Bat"), they navigate through the air very well and can pluck tiny insects out of the sky and they never bump into anything, or suffer collisions, even in dim light. Before the Bat's system of echolocation was understood, it seemed to folks that Bats must navigate by some sort of inner, psychic, or spiritual vision. Hence the Bat's eye was a token of that.

Bats are protected and endangered species in much of their former ranges, due to the human use of insecticides, the human instigation of Bat habitat destruction, the human mass-killings of Bats as they emerge from their caves at dusk as a form of "hunting" or "sport", and a current USA epidemic of a European Bat disease (White Nose Syndrome, caused by the fungus Geomyces destructans) that is devastating North American Bat populations which are not resistant to the disease.

For these reasons and many others, we do not carry Bat's eyes or any fake substitute for them at the Lucky Mojo Curio Company.

Vanilla, honey, sugar, rose water, rose petals, and tonka beans can also be used in love drawing food preparations. Be careful on the tonka beans--do your research before throwing them into the pot because they can be slightly toxic if prepared in certain ways.

Often, when people are new the The Forum many of us want to welcome them in and recommend Hoodoo in Theory and Practice and Hoodoo in Herb and Root Magic, both by Miss Cat, to help and get the ball rolling in the learning process. There are also a few threads where in the middle of the thread we share what we might have done differently from the beginning, if we could roll back the hands of time. In my case, I did not order Hoodoo in Herb and Root Magic for several months and have openly stated previously, I would have been leaps and bounds ahead if I had just done what I recommend to others now: to order the Book!

) and Alkanet. Need to spice up your love relationship??? Bloodroot and wintergreen. There are so many great herbs and roots... This is "Rootwork". Many of the roots and herbs in the book have more than one purpose. Most of them are in the $3 to $4 range. You'll spend more than that on a hot lunch!

I think this is an excellent reminder. Herbs, roots, curios, and personal concerns are really the cornerstones of our magical practice. I think often candles take precedence in folks' minds but there are SO MANY tricks detailed in HHRM that do not involve candle work--perfect for clients who are unwilling or unable to burn candles. And even for those who love burning candles--there are many other directions that can be pursued as well and in some cases may be more appropriate.

Agreed...also, I have found that the more herbs and roots I work with the more I can factually realize that some speak to, as well as work with, me more than others do. Reach out to a handful of curios, herbs, and roots at first and see what initially grabs you, spins you around, and shakes your hand! Now you're cooking!

I love this tradition because it is so strongly based in herbal magic. That was part of the original appeal to me. Now that I'm getting ready to send in my final course homework all I can think about is how much I really just want to work with the herbs and roots. Candles are nice but I'm really an herb kind of gal.

I could not agree more! Reading about the herbs and roots is one thing; actually holding them and feeling the different energies they carry is a totally different thing. I'd been reading about Queen Elisabeth root for a long time, but I never expected what I felt when I actually held one in my hand for the first time. It was like a current of electricity was running through my whole body,starting from my hand! And this is just one example. There were numerous times when the energy of a certain herb or root felt completely different than what I imagined when I was reading about it. Working with herbs and roots that speak to you gives a whole new level of confidence in your work before you even start it!

These are all great shares! Thanks all! I felt the same way. Recently one of my orders consisted of mostly herbs and roots, and I was inspired to share this with y'all because of just how important they are in what are learning and working on.

Thanks, Triple -- you are so right! The practice of conjure is called "rootwork" for a reason!

Not only possible, but please do so if you can! Getting that much closer to the herbs, roots, and plants will only cause a stronger bond with said ingredients. Good luck!

Now I don't know Lucky Mojo's sources, but generally you can try and grow the seeds. The seeds have not been tested for growablility (I make up words as I need them) such as seeds bought specifically for gardening. Often they work fine for growing anyway. [Do a genrmination test before planting out garden rows. -- cat]

Cumin takes a long time to grow, it's not well suited as an indoor houseplant and it's an annual plant.

So I say, try it out and see if they grow, Good Luck!
