I heard that there was an earthquake in Santa Rosa. Cat, are you and Nagasiva OK? Please let us know.

Melissa

(We're fine. Didn't even feel a thing. There was an eartjquake offshore near Eureka, north of here, but that's pretty far away. Thanks for asking, though -- it's like having folks say "gesundheit!" when you sneeze -- you feel cared for. :-) --cat)

One of the things my family does for New Year, to bring blessing in is toGet
a jar with a top, write what you want for the New Years on a brown pieces of
paper. Place it on your Ancestors altar. Take a cleaning bath this bath
must include the head, place a egg on top of your head, pour water over your
head as you pray, make your intents clear, pour water over your head as you
pray then break the egg on top or your head, now get down in the tub put
your head under the water, each time you come, pray, pray, pray do this 9x
as the water goes out save a little water, have the jar in a bowl and pour
some of the water around the bottle, again make your intents clear and pray,
pray, pray.

Now for the jar as you are doing this again make your intents clear and
pray. On a pice of brown paper write what you for the year put it in the
jar feed your Ancestors, also put in the jar the following

3 pennies, a hand full of black eye peas, 2 cowe shells tied face to face
with red string, 1 dime, raw sugar, heel of bread, 1 bay leaf, rice, red
pepper, small load stone, small bell, some of your hear, some of your nail,
as you put each thing in the jar, make your intents clear and pray, pray,
pray. Seal the jar make your pray over the jar, if you have a house you can
bury it under the front door, If you live in a flat keep it on your
Ancestors alter fed it when you fed your Ancestors. The years I did not do
this were hard years, the years I did this were blessed years. You have the
whole month of Jan to do this with Jan 1st being the strongest.

Hi everyone. I haven't been posting much, but I always enjoy reading
the list. I want to wish you all the happiest of holidays and many
blessings in the New Year. I especially want to extend my gratitude
and thanks to cat for all of her hard work and expertise. I have
only turned in one homework assignment so far, but I will be working
diligently over the next few months to get the course
completed. This past year has been very difficult for me, what with
my mother's heart attack and stroke in August and all of the
complications that have gone along with that. I am thrilled about
the book coming out, and am saving my pennies as we speak. I will
definitely be staying here on the list, and hope to speak up more
than 2 or 3 times a year! Thanks to all of you for your wisdom and
knowledge, and for helping to keep hoodoo a living, vibrant tradition.

Many blessings to you in the New Year,
Marisa~

Greetings Cat and to all in the HRC Group,

I feel as though I need to re-introduce myself as I have been absent for quite some time. I am Azizza, I joined hrc back in 2004 (I think). My apologies for being out of touch. However, personal matters required my attention.

I have a home based business and just recently established a website which is an on-line store. I started out selling items on eBay and grew from there. This takes up a great deal of time. The URL of the site is

http://www.ummisafara.com

it is listed as an African & World Market, however, like many things in life it is evolving into more. I just recently added dolls designed by me. I hand paint their faces (sometimes the face is an iron-on or applique, or a combination). Basically the face and body is hand painted by me, guided by spirit. These are spiritual dolls. Each one has a unique character and purpose. Like my paintings they evolve through my hands and each is different. At present there are 4 dolls on my site along with the many other items sold from the Continent of Africa. The dolls have 7 symbols painted on them, no two symbols are the same. The symbols include a third eye and a crown. I use gemstones, feathers, and hair used for weaving for the dolls. There is a
protection doll and she comes with a glass bottle of an herbal salt blend for protection, she is also painted with vines on her face and body which symbolize her connection to nature and a veil of white feathers. The eBay site Essence-of-Azizza shows additional photos of each doll, showing their various symbols as well. These dolls are copyrighted. I have additional dolls in the birthing process and all of them are guided by the spiritual realm. Each doll is created/designed using my knowledge of gemstones, herbs and my spiritual practices. Each doll is unique and carries the energy for that dolls purpose as it is guided by spirit.

When I refer to spirit, I am referring to the energy that reveals itself to me, the Creator/Creatress, the creative spirit and my guides including my ancestral guides. The making of dolls goes back a long way as you all know. I am grateful for this opportunity to share this gift with others. This website will continue to grow into its Divine Purpose. Joining hrc has given me the opportunity to meet some really wonderful people and to learn a great deal. Thank you Cat, though I have been away.........I have never forgotten

Stop by the site, let me know what you all think. She is a work in progress and she welcomes the visit. I have found that hoodoo plays a role in our lives in many ways, sometimes we don't see it immediately until a dear friend is gentle enough to point it out. I Thank that dear friend.

Cat I have been reviewing your site and the work I have received from you thus far. I will be in touch, as there are several items I know you sell that I need for the dolls that are in the birthing process. This is very exciting and has been in the creation mode for quite some time. I wanted to share it with the group.

Peace and Many Many Blessings
Azizza

(Nice to see you back. I checked out the site and it's looking good. --cat)

Greetings to everyone

I have just started the first week of lessons and just wanted to tell
you how excited I am to be doing this course!!
I'm a bit of a mixed bag, I was born in Australia and now live in
Ireland, where I work as a professional Tarot reader..My husband is
Nigerian and we will be visiting there at the end of the year,
hopefully I will get to learn about their traditional ways..
My main focus was on working with spirit through readings and
channeling but something led me to the luckymojo site and I just had
to enrol in the course.
Well I just wanted to say a quick G'day and here's hoping it's a happy
and prosperous 2006 for all.

New Years is almost here and it's time to start thinking about cooking
up some of those recipes to bring good luck and money for the coming
year. It never ceases to amaze me how recipes differ from one person to
another. I'm pretty big on family tradition and a serious believer that
it's never to late to start new ones. For those who are interested in
the annual ritual of partaking of Hoppin' John and Greens for a
prosperous 2007; see the following links for info and recipes.

We sure are on the same page Samantha! I pulled out my recipe for
Hoppin John just yesterday to make sure I had all I needed to make
it. Cat has everything right there handy on Page 44-45 for the
complete meal.Which reminded me to whip up some cornbread too. I'm
gettin' hungry just reading this... Get this, my husband is Japanese
decent, so we have to have Black beans and some other stuff as well
as my Cajun food. Talk about a crazy New Year meal! hahaha. (But its
really tasty!)

Greetings, Miss Cat, Samantha and all!

My wife asked me this morning what we are going to do to celebrate
the new year, and I remembered your posts. So right now there is some
Hoppin' John and collard greens on the stove, and we baked corn bread
from the HHRM recipes this morning. I am thankful that my wife (who
is Pentecostal by faith) has really grown to appreciate (and
sometimes utilize!...) Rootwork after seeing that dimension of it
that is so colorful, reverent, and celebratory.

And as we enter the new year, I have to say that I am thankful, Miss
Cat, for the legacy of the Rootwork course as a whole. Our life has
done (literally!) a complete 180* turn-around in every arena after
starting to do the course work. A major Thank You from Lisa and
myself.

A Blessed and Joyful New Year to All of You,

Greetings, All...

After I posted last night, I had the feeling that I was missing
something beyond the new year's holiday; another sacred occasion. I
went to bed well after midnight, and later awoke in the wee hours. I
remembered!!.....

***HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO MISS CAT AND NAGASIVA YRONWODE!!***

Very Cool! And we wish you many more years of happiness, health,
prosperity and passion.

Sincerely,

Patrick L. SKelton (#878)

(Thank you. We had a lovely weekend at the mud baths and hot springs at Calistoga, about 40 minutes to the east of where we live. This is our lucky 7th year of marriage. --cat)

Hello, folks!
I have found a couple of really cool Stroke-Of-New-Year's traditions
for good luck from my friend Elaine.
These are Vietnamese, so not Hoodoo; if this is inappropriate miss cat
please just delete.

Elaine grew up in central Vietnam, in a city called "Hue".
On New Year's Eve, just prior to midnight, every drawer and cabinet in
the home has a piece of paper money placed in it, and every faucet in
the house is turned on, so all of the water is running!
(I must remember to call her and ask her today HOW LONG to leave the
water running...!)

Of course, she grew up with this tradition for the Asian New Year, but
she celebrates both here. Elaine and I both share a fascination for
any customs and practices dealing with the bringing of Good Luck.

I understand the significance of the money, but the symbolism of the
water escapes me, and Elaine has no idea what that's all about.
Feng Shui practitioners recommend water fountains for prosperity, but
water leaks are seen as not good- a dribbling away of one's resources,
I believe.

I'm sorry not to post more, I really haven't time even to lurk these
days, but I love this group, Lucky Mojo, miss cat, and Siva!
May God bless you all with outstanding good fortune in the New Year!

Much Love,

Valentina, The Fortune-Teller of Dallas)

Greetings Holly;

Thank you for sharing that custom. I really enjoy reading about those kind of things. Yes, not sure what to think about the water idea either -- Water is linked to prosperity, and you are right about the prosperity water fountains -- many people recommend those rolling ball ones to be placed in the "prosperity corner".

I will share one New Year's custom with you from my family. Not exactly hoodoo, but it may be a common Slavic custom that could have entered hoodoo.

My Grandparents always said that whatever you do on New Year's, you'll do for the rest of the year -- so it is important not to work too hard, or lend money out. So avoid things you never want to do again on this day and do what you want to do on this day so you'll do it for the rest of the year.

Much Love & Many Blessings,

Happy New Year to All! On New Year's Eve we had a big party at my uncle's
house and ate ham, collards, Hoppin' John, and cornbread (from my maternal
grandmother's recipes). Then on New Year's Day we went to Fayetteville to see
my father's family and ate ham, collards, Hoppin' John, and cornbread (using
my paternal grandmother's recipes). May I be doubly blessed! LOL

Hoppin' John was not a tradition with my family
(caucasian-american indian-cajun from west LA/east TX) and I used a
recipe recommended here last year and I cooked it last year; I wasn't
impressed with the taste. I went back to black-eyed-peas with onion
and bacon in it this year (our tradition). I did not make the ham
since I cannot digest it anymore (I did roast beef) and I wasn't in
the mood to bake (did WAAAAYY too much over Christmas), so I opted for
carrots to be my "gold". Besides, they are one of the few vegetables
the whole family can decide on!

Hey,

Today is Epiphany and it is of course a well known spell to sprinkle
the door of the house with Holy water and writing the year and the
initials C+M+B above the door with chalk. The CMB stand for Caspar,
Melchior, and Balthazar but also has the meaning of "Christus Mansionem
Benedictat" (Christ bless this home).

I was wondering if there were any other Epiphany related Hoodoo
traicks that anywone was aware of?

Jason Miller #99

(The chalking of the stable or house door with the initials of Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar (the traditional names for the Three Wise Men, who visted Jeus on Epiphany or "The 12th day of Christmas") is Germanic, and certainly has some part to play in hoodoo, but generally speaking, Epiphany is not a big holiday among Southerners. The way the chalking was done when i was a kid was like so: you divided up the year numerals and put two on each side of the initials, with crosses in between, like this:

20 C + M + B 08

Hi there,

My grandmother, who came from west Tennessee, called the day of
Epiphany (Jan 6) "Old Christmas". I can recall only one custom
connected with it: you should never wash your clothes on Old
Christmas, or else you'll have bad luck in the year ahead.

--------

Same for me, except my grandmother called it "Second Christmas". She was German. Her mother was from Indiana/Pennsylvania. There was also a tradition of inviting grocers, milkmen, blacksmiths (community trade and business people) in for coffee or else bringing them cookies or sweetbreads.

I also have a question. I recently broke a small hand mirror -- stepped on it. Is there any hoodoo method for disposing of it? I was thinking of leaving it at a country crossroad (burying). I would appreciate any insight. Thanks.

Beverly Welch

(I was taught that if you break a miror, you should gather up all the pieces, pray over them, take them out and bury them (a crossroads would be fine, or under an old tree), and then buy a new mirror. --cat)

Here [in Italy] the 6th of january is called "Befana day".

Befana is an old witch that come on a flying broom giving gifts to good childrens & carbon to bad childrens.

In the past that was the day when you do gifts to childrens, not the Xmas (now we make gift for all on Xmas & gifts to childrens the 6th of january).

We do special cakes on that day, & in the evening of the 5th some people go around in the houses dressed like clochard witches chanting song for the childrens, distributing cakes, tangerines & nuts & receiving money & tangerine punch (or wine) as payment (obviously at the end of the evening the alcool level is quite high:-)

Some say the use of the cakes (& the recipe also) date to roman pagan time; even the figure of the Befana can be a modification of Ceres, the goddes that come from under the earth to bless the fields in that day. Anyway the name "Befana" was famous in medieval time as the name of a famous witch, queen of the witches at the sabbath under the famous nut tree of Benevento.

hope to help

Nicola Agolini #769

P.S.: hoping also that my last homeworks are arrived to Lucky Mojo

(Wow, Nicola -- that was a great piece of information. Is this common throughout Italy or in a specific region? What are the cakes like? Inquiring about the Befana cakes leads me to another question: My daughter and i are in the midst of a running "Italian Medieval Italian Cake Fest" -- we are taste-trying every variety of Tuscan / Sienese Panforte and Torta we can find in the USA and comparing them. All of them are flattened disks set on a starch wafer base with a powdered sugar topping and a paper band around the perimeter, packed in neatly folded paper that forms a hexagonal shape. Most of them list some sort of dried fruits and nuts as the major ingredients, but the tortas have more sugar in them than fruit. So far we have several brands of Panforte from Siena made with candied citron and melon, one from Massa made with figs and honey, and two generic "Tuscan" tortas that are crumbly and sugary, made with oranges, almonds, and eggs. So i have a question -- do you know why the name "Margharita" appears on some brands of Panforte di Siena? Who was Margharita? --your curious teacher, cat)

Ciao Cat!

Here we are:

In the year 1879 Queen Margherita of Italy (Margherita Maria Teresa
Giovanna di Savoia 1851-1926, wife of the king of Italy Umberto di
Savoia) visited the city of Siena. To welcome her a specialist
prepared a milder Panforte, with less spices than usual. The
inhabitants of Siena gave this cake to the Queen, and named it
"Panforte Margherita". Today some brands of white Panforte sold all
over the world are still called "Panforte Margherita".

Also the most famous Neapolitan "Pizza Margherita" (a pizza dressed
with tomato sauce, mozzarella and basil) was created in honor of Queen
Margherita di Savoia, when she visited Naples in 1889! She liked this
pizza the most, also because it had the 3 colors of the Italian flag
(white, red and green).

The 2 "pizzettari" who invented the "Pizza Margherita" for the Queen
were Raffaele Esposito and his wife Rosina Brandi. The "Pizzeria
Brandi" is still in business in Naples, just two steps from the Royal
palace. I went there and had a proper "Pizza Margherita" quite a few
times. REALLY a very high standard, believe me ;-).

Ciao a tutti!

Federico Marincola (student #472)

(Thank you, Federico! That was GREAT research. The piza sounds lovely as well. Pizza for dinner, panforte for dessert! --cat)

> (Wow, Nicola -- that was a great piece of information. Is this
common throughout Italy or in a specific region?

---well, i'm not shure for the diffusion .....Befana is the usual name
of the day pratically in all Italy, but i think this particular cakes
(well, in effect the exact word to use is, i think , bisquits) are
specific of my area. They are made with flour, milk, butter, eggs,
lemon peel & sometime some drop of anisette liquour. they are very
popular in all the times of Xmas but specially the morning of the 6th
with milk or tea. Generally we make them in different flat shapes
(little men, bags, flowers, birds) in quite a big dimension (respect
on the standard bisquits in italy).

Then, if you are interested in proper cakes, we have different kind in
the area....in easter we make sweet rice cakes that are more similar
to condensed pudding, salty farro cakes (farro is a particular cereal)
with goat milk, salty vegetable cakes, bread with a kind of grape
that is called "strawberry grape".....

well, you know....it seems incredible but in Italy every little area it's different in recipes, tradition & so on.....think that just on my part of Tuscany, in less than 30 Km of coast we spell more than 6 different dialects....not talking about the mountains!

sorry, i want not to be boring....for the story of Margherita...even
on that i'm not shure, 'cause Panforte is specific of the area of
Siena & it's quite far from my area (well, in effect is only less than
50 miles but....) i'm thinking is a business of a queen named
Margherita that like cakes & request a special recipe that remain with
her name.....:-)

hope to help

Nicola Angolini #769

(You did help, thanks. The lemon and anisette bisquits sound delightful -- just the thing to have with tea in mid-Winter. The "salty vegetable cakes" sound interesting to me too. Federico Manicola already supplied the story of Queen Margherita, and the special panforte recipe named in her honour. I was so tempted by his description of the ""other" Queen Margherita recipe, Pizza Margherita, that i ordered the closest thing we have to that up here, which goes by the name "North Coast Special." It's basicallically a Pizza Marghrita (tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil pesto, the red, white, and green pizza) on which pieces of chicken and marinated artichoke hearts are scattered as gustatory ornamentation. Yum yum. It was great. I have a slice left over for lunch today, too. --cat)

Nicola Angolini,

That is amazing, in Calabria, where my family came from, the
traditions are so different and so are the recipes, even though most
of the ingredients are the same (we have lots of Christmas goodies
made with lemon and anise, too). It's so cool to see the different
traditions and recipes from all over Italy. The regional differences
in culture that give Italy its richness seem to be (sadly) diminishing
in the Information Age, the age of the so called Global Village. I
hope all of these local traditions are preserved forever, they're
really beautiful. Thanks for sharing this great info, Nicola and Federico.

Were a customer to send flowers to the shop as a thank you greeting, are there any conflicts (allergies, etc.)?

My goodness, no! We LOVE flowers!!! We work with scents and herbs all day long, so we are not allergic types.

Many of us love chocolate, but several of us are on diets, so flowers always hit the spot for everyone and leave no one feeling left out. We are really happy when flowers get delivered here. You should especially see us ooh and aaah over bunches of roses -- and then come back and check us out again as the roses fade and watch as Robin carefully dries the falling petals for use in our oils and foil packs! :-)

We also rave big-time over those cute food baskets that contain a mix of non-sugary things like cheeses and crackers and nuts along with chocolates and the like.

It is sweet of you to ask.

Sending those crafty little fruit baskets seems like a good idea too. They're edible and pretty.

We did! I just got back from a big dinner fest with my daughter, grandsons and my son-in-law's extended family, plus their neighbors, plus my daughter's step-sister and her husband and child. There were about 30 of us.

Best wishes to everyone -- and the shop will be open tomorrow as usual!

nagasiva,

I had to drop you a note on this day! It has been a wonderful one since the heavy dreams I had last night, and has continued throughout.

Now I find out it is your Birthday as well. Wow. Happy Birthday to you and thank you for your HUGE part in all of this. You are much-ly appreciated every day! :)

I hope you have a tremendous day...I am glad you were born!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
