Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
hi everyone out there
i have a question.
could i perform a spell, for perhaps love, with the help of a friend?
isn't it the same, almost, as if a rootworker works the spell for you?
i'm asking, because i read an article of why spells often don't work, and the writer/rootworker said, "never talk of your action, spell, work..." but perhaps it could strengthen you, when a friend is beside you, talks to you, and helps you to focus and concentrate.
any opinions?

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
Yes, I do this with another friend of mine who does rootwork. I wouldnt say its the same as working with rootworker, but it would definitely have to be a friend you trust, and is not going to add negativity, or go blabbing about your work to the target or anyone else.
As for never talk about your work with someone else. There is a difference between speaking with someone who is a professional or someone who is coaching you, than saying on the forum. In my instance, I know I can trust this friend to do the work for me, and she is not going to overthink, pour negativity into the situation, and so on. It takes a level of trust, and I would only do it if there is trust, and a level of skill that person has by using the products, herbs, and techinique. I would not pass this situation on to someone that is going to overthink the situation by throwing a ridiculous amount of spells, someone that would tell my target or others. Sometimes I do pass things off to this person, and she can focus much better than I can or when I need an extra boost in an urgent situation.

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
Working together for various means is not unheard of and can be beneficial. If your friend who is a rootworker is helping out each of you can focus on a specific area of the issue in order to best help. For example, if you have a good hand in money drawing and she enjoys road opening work. She can light her candles to open the roads while you work money drawing. Of course this applies to a hypothetical situation.
Both of you are involved in the working and so can discuss it, but when you start putting out your work for others to critique, judge, and examine then prepare for an onslaught of other people's influences.

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
I was reading this today. Cat wrote it:
"First you put your two knees close up tight
Then you sway them to the left, then you sway them to the right
Step around the floor kind of nice and light
Then you twist around and twist around with all your might,
Stretch your loving arms straight out into space,
Then you do the Eagle Rock with style and grace.
Swing your foot way 'round then bring it back.
Now that's what I call Ballin' the Jack."
There is some discussion about meanings, but I cannot help but see description of a pendulum swinging about in a dance.
"Two knees close up tight" -- drawstrings?
The Eagle Rock dance movement has some discussion too. The stories about eagles swaying just add to the pendulum sway imagery for me.
Does anybody else see the metaphor? Or could this "dance song" actually have been describing jack bag divination and people created a dance out of it? Could that be why it drove people down in Georgia " 'bout insane"? Because it's describing a hoodoo divination pendulum bag dancing about?
That's when the old song (1913), Balling the Jack, came to mind.Alternaive American names for the mojo bag include hand, mojo hand, conjure hand, lucky hand, conjure bag, trick bag, root bag, toby, jomo, and gris-gris bag. In the Memphis region, a special kind of mojo, worn only by women, is called a nation sack. A mojo used for divination, somehwat like a pendulum, is called a Jack, Jack bag, or Jack ball.

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
EcleckticMama ,
That is an interesting idea, but not realistic. A dance song that describes "legs" and "arms" and "twisting" is just that. It is not a cryptic reference to drawstrings on a bag -- especially since many mojo bags are sewn or folded, not wrapped or tied with string. Furthermore, if you are speaking of a jack ball, it is essentially made of string, and is not a bag with drawstrings.
This is what is called "folk etymology," by the way -- trying to connect two similar words based on metaphor, with no other reason than that one reminds you of the other.
In this case the word "jack" could also refer to the child's game of "jacks" or function as a nickname for John, as in John the Conquer Root.
And in the song, "balling" could refer to the high-balling of a train, running it fast with no stops, where "giving the high ball" meant signaling with a circular disc, globe, or hand movement that there was clear track ahead. And, of course, "balling" also refers to males having sex, as the testicles are commonly called "balls,"
I always think of the Eagle Rock dance, and similarly named dances such as the Turkey Trot and the Buzzard Lope, which refer to American bird species, as being somehow a remnant of Native American dance influences in the African American community.

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
Hi,
I am going to the Lucky Mojo store soon, and really need help in narrowing down my "to buy" list. (I am thinking of trying to keep the total at or below $150.00) I will need some basic stuff, especially items that can be used to complete my course work (for the LM Rootwork course) but I also want to add to my growing stock of the most needed or most useful items in a (would be) root worker's bag of tricks. I have been trying to make a list of things I plan to buy, but each time I sit down and start browsing the LM catalog, the list grows to a ridiculous size.
Do you all have an opinion about whether oils are more important to have on hand versus powders? Or should roots and herbs be more of my focus? The things I am certain about are (so far) a triple strength Mojo bag, some Fiery Wall sachet powder and incense ( I do have the oil already), camphor, Queen Elizabeth roots, Gravel root, Devil's Shoestring, Benzoin, Lodestones, Sandlewood chips, Licorice root, Cherry bark, Bloodroot, Lovage, Calamus root and for oils; Follow me Boy, Cleo May, Love Me, Attraction, Stay with Me, Fire of Love, Kiss me Now, Look me Over... and I realize I am way over my money limit! lol
If any of these above Love/Attraction oils are redundant, let me know, and I can remove them from the list... I have tried to get certain roots from other sources but their quality was just so underpar compared to LM's roots, so I do want to get the roots that would be a staple in any rootworker's pantry from Lucky Mojo. The roots I have listed are just the ones that I want at the moment, but if there are some really big ones that I have missed please let me know .... Also, if I would be better off getting a sachet powder rather than one of the oils I listed, feel free to tell me...that way, I can maybe get as much as I am wanting and still keep the cost under (or near) my limit.
Thank you for reading this and for nay help you may wish to give.

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
I would make sure you get some John the Conqueror roots - they are extremely useful in a wide variety of situations. I would never be without them personally.
As to whether you want oils or powders, it really depends on what kind of tricks you want to be using them with. Do you mostly work with candles? If so oils would likely be more practical. Do you do a lot of dressing of your body or items, foot track tricks, etc, then powders may be better for you.

My most-used supplies are:
Astral oil for my zodiac sign
Attraction Oil
Blessing Hoodoo Incense
Crown of Success Oil
Purple and black candles are sometimes hard to find, so pick up a few
Chinese Wash is very useful
Parchment paper
I envy you for being able to go to the shop. I have to wait until my supplies come in the mail. Have fun!

Hey preppieroots-- wish I could tag along and be there!!! It sounds like you have a very good knowledge and prespective of what you want. Protection for you and your home and a partner that will love you but be very financially giving is that you wish to attract? Do I have that correctly?
Testiomony-- love the LM oils Can't be without. LM Fiery Wall of Protection, LMCrown of Success,LM Money Drawing, Lm Attraction and LM Vanvan are all a MUST. Consider too the LM Chinese Wash for the home. The Book which you may already have, Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic, by Miss Cat-- plus the great choices above that you listed AND the chance to hand pick per Devi's advice a John the Conquerer Root!!!
I also recommend a Lodestone.
Great luck to you!!!

Definitely a Planetary oil: Sun, Mercury, Venus, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, your zodiac oil, Cast off Evil, Healing oil, Master Key oil, Fast Luck, Special oil #20, Saltpeter, if you work with candles, consider the Adam & Eve (white, black, red), skull (white, black, red) and 4 inch (these are hard to find)...

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
Woohoo!! Thanks so much for all of the replies!! You all are so helpful and well informed, I love this place.
Okay, to address all of the suggestions;Hi Devi, about the HJC, I have two, but I agree it is a root I need to have a good supply of. I do tend to use candles more than other avenues, so I will be sure to concentrate on the oils more than the powders. Thanks, Devi.
Hi IBube, Parchment paper is something I had not even considered! I usually use torn paper bag, but I will for sure put some on my list. I am well stocked on purple and black candles, Crown of Success, Chinese wash but am for sure putting Attraction oil on the list. I am still on the fence about what type of home blessing/cleansing type of incense I want.... and with two people mentioning the Zodiac/Planetary type oils, I need to have a closer look at those... Thank you, IBube.
Hi Triplethreat, yes, I am really wanting to streamline my house cleansing routine, and somehow use incense or candles to help with this, and though I do already have a partner (lol) we've been married quite a long time and I need to do some work to get things hopping again.
I do have some Van Van but it's from a different source, and so I am thinking I will go ahead and get some LM Van Van, that or Special Oil #20...I will also put the Money drawing oil onto the list...Thanks for the help!
Hi jwmcclln, I will put one of the Planetary or Zodiac oils on my list, I need to give some thought to which one(s) I want to use... right now I am thinking I could go with a specific planet, and the zodiac sign that planet is in, in my natal chart...Cast Off Evil and Master Key sound like two I ought to include as well...I had considered putting saltpeter on my list, it seems like an ingredient I see a lot in different tricks/recipes, so I will be sure to get some! I don't know what to do about candles, I had been avoiding considering any just so as to keep my total down...but I hear you about how those specific ones are hard to find, I'll need to get out my calculator and see if I can work some candles into this list. Thank you for your input!!
And just to say, I am beside myself about going to LM, I feel like a little kid about to go to a magical toy/candy store. That's the major reason I am trying to make a coherent list, I just know as soon as I walk into the store I will lose my sh*t and forget everything I really need, but buy more than I had planned on!! It will be a huge feat of strength for me to keep this under my limit....so I am trying to be good and restrain myself and have a reasonable guideline just to keep my head straight. I wish you guys could come with me too! I'd love to share this shopping experience with people who are as excited about this stuff as I am! I will have hubby and two kids waiting for me in the car, so I cannot get too lost in my shopping delirium, they can only take so much!

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
Hey, Preppieroots -- the lists that folks gave you are great. You can also ask Robin what the most popular items are. They are popular for a reason! Do you know about our 4 ounce Rootworker's Special oils -- you choose a blend of any 1, 2, 3, or 4 oils and get 4 ounces for a significant savings over the 8 small bottles that have the same volume.
Also, as a student, do you need any supplies to finish your homework, such as roots and herbs, a red flannel bag, an empty bottle in which to present your oil?
Finally, for a very useful quick-list of products and how they are used, see
Hoodoo at a Glance:

Hope to see you soon!

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
HI Catherine! Thanks for the reply and all of the information in it! I am going tomorrow morning-ish, maybe I'll be there by 10 or a little earlier... I will be the one with the stunned wide eyed look on my face (and most likely a huge grin)!
I saw some posts about the Rootworker's special oils, and had thought about it, but I am not sure about what I'd want to mix together, and what I'd want to keep in the original state... I may change my mind about that though.
I am definitely going to be getting things for my course work, I think mostly roots, but I may want to add in some curios as well... (I am not quite sure what I will use in my homework mojo, but whatever it is, I don't want it to be the last of it, root and curio wise, so I want to stock up on certain ones, especially HJC and Queen Elizabeth and maybe Angelica, as well as lodestones) I am all set on Mojo bags and flannel, but may be in the market for some bottles. (I have a weakness for cool, little bottles!)
I am really excited to finally go to your store!! And I eagerly look forward to meeting you.
Thanks so much for the gracious invitation to a reading, but I am not sure about how much time I will get before the kids start a mutiny....and it's probably too short of notice to expect you to have an opening. But if things should happily (and magically) fall into place, I'll definitely take you up on that offer!
PS sorry about the excessive use of exclamation points...It's just that I am all jacked up about this shopping trip.

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
Hi -- Sorry my wording caused a misunderstanding -- i did not offer to schedule a reading when i wrote, "I have readings scheduled every afternoon on Wednesdays through Sundays, so call and get my schedule." What i meant was, if you want to see me, you need to know my schedule so you'll be there when i am not giving a reading.
Tomorrow i am scheduled to be a guest on a radio show at eleven AM. I am being interviewed, and the show will last for an hour. After that i will be booked for readings. Like i said -- my schedule is always solidly booked, so a few days notice works best. I probably will not be able to see you tomorrow morning, as i will be getting ready for the radio show and will be doing that from my house, not at the shop, as it will be quieter. I'll show up at the shop a few minutes after noon, i expect. I have no idea when my first reading of the day is -- maybe 1:00 or 1:30. If we don't connect, just search out and introduce yourself to Robin, the shop manager. She's the only employee with red hair. She'll give you the tour and help you find everything you want.
Also, we do have a picnic table area (not the wooden picnic table up by the shop, where we are painting the building, but down the hill at the stone bench and table) and you are welcome to hang out until i do show up.

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
I'm back home from my shopping trip and just want to say it was truly wonderful. Catherine, you have such a cool shop and you and all of your employees are honestly the most friendly and helpful folks I have ever come across in any retail setting.... I did not stay under my limit, but that is okay, I am glad I didn't!
I will finish sharing my experience at Lucky Mojo Curio Company in the Testimonials forum.
And thank you all again for all of the help you gave me in this thread.

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
Hey, it was fun to meet you and get to know you. And i enjoyed getting you to do homework #5! I was in the church giving a reading by the time you finished it and did not get to say a proper goodbye -- who did you turn the homework in to -- and where did they put it? I don't want it to go missing, cause the homework party is tomorrow after work.

Uh oh....I am not sure who it was, it was someone behind the big counter area, a lady....she did photocopy it and gave me a copy.... it was not Nicole (the lady who rang me out). I do not think it was one of the Robins...but I am not positive about that....?
It was very lovely meeting you, Catherine. Sorry I did not have a chance to say Goodbye properly. Though I am sure it will not be my last visit!! And thank you for getting me to do that homework, I think it will make doing the rest of it easier now.... 1 down and 7 to go!!

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
You can do the fiery wall of protection spell for children as well. I would recommend not using the oils or herbs as they can have different effects on children especially infants. However, you could probably be safe with the bath crystals considering they will be diluted in the water.

I always thought "balling the jack" was a sexual reference until now, thanks LM...
It didn't help that Dom Deluise and Gene Wilder sang it in an old movie, where it was definitely used as a sexual reference.

May I suggest baths? I LOVE LM's baths!!!
My favorite is Van Van.
I also like the herb blend baths a lot!
Also the herbs and roots the shop sells are incredible.
I always get a root or two with my orders, I love them!
Get a lucky hand root for good luck in your works!

I was just reminiscing with my daughter today about this very subject, if I had known than what I know now, I would have started by ordered spell kits because they include everything necessary. But of course there are those incidentals that may be come in a spell kit but generally speaking, love and success kits include everything needed. Good Luck with your first order doughnut_hand! You will feel like its Christmas every time you receive the package, they are heavenly.

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
Must haves for anyone planning on working with conjure in my opinion include:
Van Van
Chinese Floor Wash
Hoyt's Cologne/Florida Water (I work with both)
Fiery Wall of Protection
Uncrossing
Attraction
Candle snuffers
John the Conqueror
This is of course is the most basic list. It covers cleaning out messes, uncrossing, luck, attraction, and protection.
Of course for those that work with conjure more regularly you find that you list of "must haves" is far larger

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
Hello all! I am looking for ideas on how to give hoodoo inspired gifts for the upcoming holiday season at work ( and for family). I work in a hospital and there is good camaraderie at work most of the time, but everything can always be improved, right?
Wanting to start a thread where we can share ideas to create innocent / benign appearing but tricked (
) gifts that will achieve this purpose...candles and cookies come to mind, also wondering if or how shop-bought gifts can be dressed, and which ones? Mostly looking for generic, not too expensive items...
thanks,
Zee

The Missionary Independent Spiritual Church booklet "Hoodoo Food!" will give you some great "tricked" food recipes to try out for the holidays, including Love Muffins, Black Magic Cake, Lavender Love Jelly, Fast Luck Punch, Peaceful Home Chicken, and more. Included are prize-winning 2010 Conjure Cook-Off recipes that were crafted by two of America's best root worker cooks: Momma Hen of AIRR and Robin Petersen, the shop manager at Lucky Mojo.
Order:
Hoodoo Food! The 2010 Conjure Cook-Off and Rootwork Recipe Round-Up
Cooking with magical herbs is a time-honored form of domestic spell magic. Practitioners often prepare foods to enhance love, sexuality, fidelity, and for peace and protection in the home -- and have been also known to sneak a not-so-nice trick into a tasty treat to get co-workers to stop gossiping, to gain control over a lover, or to drive an enemy away. This booklet will get you started cooking with hoodoo herbs -- and may encourage you to enter the annual Conjure Cook-Off and Rootwork Recipe Round-Up sponsored by The Ladies' Auxiliary of Missionary Independent Spiritual Church, (All proceeds from recipe booklet sales benefit the church.) 16 pages, stapled booklet.

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
Hi Cat,
thanks for the reply ! Thats a great idea! ...I am also hoping for my course book to be mailed out soon...can this possibly be included in that mailing? I know you have my charging info on record at your end. Also do I call in to have the discreet mailing address on all things or what is the best/quickest way to get in touch with some one before things are sent out? The store must be closed at this hour...I am on central time myself...

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
Zee -- to place orders, you have to call the shop. I have signed a bunch of course books recently, have no idea which ones have gone out, and i don't even know who you are, because you are using an anonymous name here!
The store is indeed closed -- it's 3:00 AM here and i am posting from my home.
To have things mailed discreet, just mention it on your shopping cart order -- or you can call the shop when they open, at 9:00 AM Pacific, which is 11:00 AM Central.
You'll love the little cook booklet -- it's lots of fun. If you like cooking with culinary magical herbs, i hope you will enter a recipe in next May's Conjure Cook-Off -- it's an annual event and the creation of the annual booklets not only raises money for our church, it will eventually result in the production of a regular paperback sized book of "Hoodoo Food!" which we will sell through Amazon and other outlets.

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
Art or photographs dressed with powders and oils, and/or with holy cards or other items slipped into the frame behind the picture. LM carries all that stuff.
Also, the section with all the pendants and bracelets and stuff could also work for you, as you could dress and pray over those before giving them away.
There's also those cinnamon brooms. I've been pretty intrigued by those.

Dress candles with oils and herbs and maybe a touch of glitter. Wealthy Way, Prosperity, Steady Work, Peaceful Home, Crown of Success, Attraction, and Traquility would be good choices for co-workers; I'm sure there are many others that would people would enjoy.

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
Hi, Ive finally been paid and I am ready to place my first order to Lucky Mojo- Its my gift to myself. The first thing I did was bought my first tarot deck. I have been sleeping with it and bonding with them often since I bought them. So I have been struggling to complete my order because
1.) Im greedy- and I truly want to order everything on the site
2.) Cant afford to be greedy, so I have a wine appetite on a beer budget so to speak
3.) Dont know exactly what to get
So with this in mind I have really been pondering the need for uncrossing, as I feel I desperately need it. So using the 1 card method- this is what I asked my cards. First question ever- I got "The Tower" So I took this to mean YES- You definitely need an uncrossing- Now at 40.50 Im sure the spell kit is the way to go for this. But is it absolutely necessary to be effective or could I go with a less expensive route- leaving room to order more products.
Aside from the Introduction- the purpose of this thread was to solicit ideas on what u all think is the MUST HAVES FOR A NEWBIE AND A Great FIRST ORDER to get me started in my work.
I already have my
1.Triple Strength Attraction Mojo Bag in the cart- Its a non-negotiable
2) and Cats Book of course
3.) What are the staple tools of a successful rootworker -
Or is it best to start small- get the book and learn a little more before ordering like crazy?
Thanks to all who take the time to respond!!

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
Hi and welcome. I know the feeling regarding the first order. I wish I could have gotten one of everything. anyway, I believe this has been discussed in various threads but I found these few for you just to get started:
my-first-order-,-what-are-the-%22must-h ... 4s450.html
what-is-your-favorite-lm-oil--t8956.html
your-favourite-things-t8130.html
I also remember a very long post by Devi Spring regarding what she keeps in her pantry and why. It was quite lengthy and exhaustive. See if you can find that one. Actually, it may have been on her blog. Maybe she'll see this post and let you know.
I think your order will completely depend on what you are trying to accomplish. If you just want to build your pantry, there are the staples like cleansing and protection and so forth. If you have a specific goal in mind, you'll want to include the products geared specifically towards that goal. Check out those threads and you'll start building an idea of what is included in the basics.
Regarding the crossing, I think it may be worth your while to confirm that reading with a professional worker. You can even do a mini one question read. I'm sure you've got skills but since you're just starting out, you may want to have a professional give it a once over. You can find reputable readers here: http://www.readersandrootworkers.org/
good luck and have fun!

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
I would start with Money Drawing, Crown of Success, Van Van, Love products, Protection products, 13, 9 and 7 herbs spiritual baths and look into the Planetary oils and your Zodiac oil. I always say if I had 20/20, I would have started out purchasing spell kits.

.
But... I have have many products and am a proud member of The Forum and Miss Cats Class
You really are going to be impressed and love what you ordered! There is nothing like it. You can go back through the testimonials section of The Forum and see people who have ordered for the first time or many years and every single time they are doing backflips!

You will definitely feel like its Christmas every time you get an order. You can feel and see the special attention and care they wrap into every order. You will dismiss the cost for the quality your receive and know it is worth that and much much much much much much more!

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
I am very curious. I looked outside today and there were 2 piles of Rocks outside the bedroom window my brother sleeps at. They looked like they were placed there by someone. 2 little piles with gravel. Does anyone know what kind of magick or spell or what this could mean?

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
It's not typical of hoodoo. We are more likely to hide our work than advertise it.
Did you look under the piles to see if anything was hidden there?
Did you count the number of rocks in each pile to see if the numbers were significant?
To dispose of the work, if you do not wish it around you, take it to a running river and throw the riocks in from a bridge or from the shore, or take it to a crossroads and toss the rocks into the road.
Good luck.

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
It seems as though someone or something is doing all they can to keep me from moving forward. So check this out- My order arrives and in two separate packages, in two separate Uncrossing Spell Kits, Both Chinese Wash were busted. So now I must wait for Lucky Mojo to send the replacements. Which really sucks
The question I have now, is should I wait until after I have completed the uncrossing spell kit- to Activate my Triple Strength Attraction Mojo for exotic dancers or can I just go ahead and activate and start the bonding process.
Since I have years of energy built up from working in the club environment- I was wondering could the mojo benefit from this energy or is it better to infuse it with my "uncrossed" energy?
Thanks for all who take the time to respond- I am so anxious- as this was my first order. Please all opinions welcomed.

wait until you complete the uncrossing spell; have you had a reading to confirm that you are crossed up?

Re: Basic Understanding of Traditional African American Hoodoo
As the title says, what products would you suggest, as in items that should be on hand in case anything happens. Or in case of an "emergency", or like an all purpose thing? Or I guess, something you never go without?
what spell kits?
oils?
powders?
bath crystals? etc
I'm looking to buy more stuff, just to have I guess, but I don't know what to get.
