Besides the short and correct answer already given above I will add my 2c.
Working with nature spirits are relevant for cultures living in close connection with nature and the need to interact with it. Most of the folk magical practice having to do with nature spirits in Europe has to do with farming, hunting, fishing and alike. The magic is other most relevant for those owning their own farm or growing their own crops etc.

Now consider the culture in which the Hoodoo tradition has developed since the 18th century. Slaves, rarely farm owners then urbanization and so on. That is probably why the use of nature spirits of the European forms has not become an integrated and common practice in the community today.

On a side note, these beings were not very important in the later North European folk magic either, except as sources of disease and destruction due to offence. When it comes to spirits in both North European folk magic and Hoodoo, the most important spirits have always been the dead. One may also see a difference between general folk magic and modern initiatory traditions. The latter tends to put more emphasis on personified spirits and focuses around a spiritual practice, while the former is more concerned with the "natural virtue" of that material and the mundane results one might expect from using it.

You'll find talk of the little folk and similar personification of nature and its spirits within various folk-traditions of Europe. Some of the Appalachian workers and those heavily influenced by Germanic and Celtic practices have adopted such thought, but hoodoo doesn't have the same personification. Hoodoo's purview comes from the Native American who did not personify nature into anthropromophic entities, but rather saw them as spirits in themselves. Like the tradition that influenced its outlook on nature, conjure does not have a need to "classify" and "identify" spirits. There are either spirits of the dead or spirits of the natural world. That's it.

In this view, the rose as alive as the Spirit of the Rose, and red pepper is Red Pepper. Both of these are spirits and are called upon in our work in the name of God. Nature is seen as alive and very much filled with spirits, they just don't have to be anthropomorphic.

Thank you for the clarification. I can appreciate the difference between believing all things have a spirit, and personifieing those same spirits into "beings".
There was a time in my personal practice when calling on or invoking deities or spirits to "bless" herbs or whatever seemed very important, but anymore I feel more like I'm "waking up" a spirit within the herb or root itself. I still believe in those spirit beings of nature, but having forms or names for them doesn't feel like its the point at all.
Thanks again

Recently my ex and I had a really bad fight which led to police being involved and me pressing charges against him, I love him dearly and when I pressed the charges I was so angry and hurt and frustrated with him and what he has put me through for many years, now he is a waiting his first court hearing, I was wondering if there is a saint that can help me with making him admit what he did and not hate me so nuch cause I know he does:( he was the one who called the police when there was no altercation except us talking and it back fired on him, he is not allowed to contact me. I wanted him to feel bad for hurting me and treating me so badly when all I ever did was love him, I am currently working a break up jar to keep him away from others and vise versa, and still burning candles on his honey jar, I was just hoping someone could suggest a saint to turn this whole situation around and that he can be ok with me eventually:(

Hello Bellasr34,

This situation of yours seems to be getting worse and worse. I know you say you love this man, but youv'e been working on him since as long as I can remember and rather than get good results you've posted that he's been cold to you, vanishes on you, still may have interest in other women, and apparently you two have some pretty huge altercations. It might be time to recognize that this relationship simply isn't healthy.

You've posted repeatedly about getting forgiveness, getting reconciliation, dominating, tying his nature, and it doesn't seem to be headed in the right direction. If this was a few months worth of work, that is one thing, but you are going on several years now of working the same situation.

We've gotten to know your situation here and I can tell you that we all want you to be happy, therefore please consider moving on from this man.

My suggestion is a Cut and Clear.

In response to your question, Saint Martha can dominate him to tell the truth, Just Judge can help you get justice, but having him admit the truth and forgive you may be a bit more than your ex is capable of.

I think it is time to move on. You have been working on this man for quite some time, and even though you have been able to temporarily mend things...this man still acts differently. In addition, the situation has escalated into the police and perhaps some violence/abuse happening. With you calling the cops on him because you were upset about this incident and everything that happened in the past, has illustrated you working against yourself with your magic.

So honestly, I think your best move would be to get a reading to see if this can be mended. And if it can't its time to move on.

Thank you conjure man, you and everyone on here have been nothing but good to me and thnk you,I really have no choice but to move on because of the charges that are against him. I really just wanted him to apologize but you are right he will never give me that, right now all I want is for him to admit what he had done and except the chasrge and not go to trial which will just drag on and is only 8 months away, I really just want it done and over with and hope to be happy one day, right now its hard because I feel so guilty doing that to him, I'm a good person yet he is making me out to be horrible. Is there anything I can do to keep him from bad mouthing me to people

Most people are going to tell lies to try to paint themselves in a better light. I would do the stop gossip spell and move on knowing that you are in the right. You can look yourself in the eye each morning, who knows if the same can be said for him. You deserve better. hugs!

I agree. Its time to leave well enough alone now. Do some stop gossip work, cut and clear, and some healing. Its time to move on from this situation. I dont think you further need to look like the victim as you have been through enough.

Also, pressing charges on someone that put their hands on you is the reality. Yet you state that you did this out of anger, and basically not with a clear mind. That is an abused person's mentality. He was wrong for putting his hands on you regardless of how and why it happened. Then you state you want to make it better again with saint work. I think you trying to force something that is just not working for you.

So with that said you need to get some clarity and king solomon of wisdom work going on yourself as well. You need to see your situation clearly, and make the best decisions for yourself.

I want to thank you all for the advice, it will take a while for me to get through this, I need to get stronger, sometimes what you feel in your heart is not what you know in your head but we tend to follow our hearts, at least I did, I am still struggling with what I did to him by pressing charges, I know it was the right thing but my heart says different, I can't help but cry when I think that all I did and how much I adored him and it all came to this and I lost him for good. Thank you eash and everyone of you who helped me along the way. It means so much to me. I know I need a lot of healing in my heart and soul. I'm broken and I don't know how to mend myself.

When you are working with a new saint or angel for the first time how long do you have light a candle, or layout flowers to really to establish a relationship with them. I was told that certain saints and angels want a relationship with you before they grant your petition. Is that true?

Hi Tabbylove,

many questions concerning working with saints are answered in the following forum thread which was very helpful to me working-with-deities,-angels,-spirits,- ... -t450.html . May it also be for you.

As to establishing relationships, it is true that some saints prefer a working relationship b4 you petition them. Think about it: how would you like a perfect stranger to ask you a favour on the street? Good Samaritan or not, if you got requests 10x a day from Mr. or Mrs. Anyone; you'd probably react humanly and become somewhat irritated!

When you ask how long it takes to establish a relationship: that's subjective. As a general rule, you'll be able to tell when the relationship has been established. You'll be able to feel their energy in your altar space or with you as you go about your activities. I've found (and yes this is merely my own opinion on the subject ;) ) that the relationship itself can become much more rewarding than any petition. For example: I cherish the relationship I have with St-Joseph of Cupertino and pray to him regularly. I've also made him a permanent altar-piece by hand and done much research into his life. The working relationship deepens as I consider him a mentor and example to aspire to and work with.

That said, your own individual experience will be different. After reading the above suggested thread, if the answers you seek are still unclear, specify the Saint or Angel that you're working with and many on this forum would be able to suggest approaches tailored to that specific person/emanation/Deity.

Blessings and best of luck.

Hi Everyone,

I only recently joined this forum but i do find it so interesting and the people are so lovely.
I need some help with Santa Marta La Dominadora.
I've started working with her for about a week now and i so love her. She is wonderful with us women and she is so powerful indeed and iwant to make sure i look after her well so she can work for me and so i need help with the altar for her.
Should i put her separate from the rest( my other altars in my house) or what should i do to keep her happy. At the moment she is on my main altar with many other lovely Saints, right at the top of it on a separate small shelf and also she is in my bedroom and i do light candles for La Metresa in both places.
But as i said i am not at peace if this is correct and fair setting for her.
Please someone help me in this matter.

Thank you Santa Marta La Dominadora, Saint Martha,Saint Expedite and Saint Ramona
Love you all x x

I keep St. Martha on the same altar as all the other saints without problem -- if you're working especially with her, maybe give her pride of place on your altar and set her in the center or the highest place. I've worked with her in the past, but she seems to get a long with my girlfriend a little more -- might go back to that idea that she prefers to work with women. I'm sure there would be no problem keeping her with your other saints.

There are various traditions that revolve around Saint Martha and they derive from various regions. Some insist that she doesn't like to share an altar, others find that she shares just fine. The truest way forward is to ask her about her preference and get her approval.

I have moved back into my parents house for a bit as I am separating and getting a divorce. My St expidite statue was knocked over and his head fell off. I did not really have a proper space set up yet, so I am not surprised. What should I do with him? I am sure I need a new one.

I am in the process of deciding on one or a few saints with whom to hopefully develop an ongoing prayerful relationship. In order to decide which one (s) I have been studying on the lives of saints popular in hoodoo and the ways in which they are petitioned for help. Can we petition St Expedite to help us with our habit of procrastination?

i had a terrible fight with my ex and did something incredibly stupid and disrespectful after too much drink (not cheating). Since that time i have apologized repeatedly and tried to make it up to him but i cant seem to get things right again. We still hang out sometime but things are still weird between us. HE told me yesterday that hes still pretty pissed about what happened and said he dont know if he can get over it. I am already burning pink candles dressed with Lucky Mojo reconcilation oil on my ongoing honey jar 4 him which i suspect is the main reason hes even talking to me a little now. Is there a paritcular saint I can petition to help ease his anger towards me? id really like his forgiveness and trust again.

I think you should allow time since you are working Reconciliation and a Honey Jar. Remember time heals. Have you worked the complete Reconciliation Spell? You can certainly ask Saint Rita for (http://www.readersandrootworkers.org/in ... Saint_Rita) intercession on your behalf. She is the patron Saint for reconciliation cases.

LM carries oils for working with many of the Saints and Angels and All Saints oil is also a good choice (http://www.luckymojo.com/mojocatoils.html#catholic).

There is also a full selection of prayer cards, statuettes and prayer plaques to build your altar (http://www.luckymojo.com/mojocatstatuary.html; http://www.luckymojo.com/mojocatholycards.html; http://www.luckymojo.com/mojocatamulets.html#italy)

Hello!

I'll make this real quick and straight to the point. I simply want to know if this is something wrong, for separation work (I wrote about it not so long ago, but I said "break up" instead of separation) I did the jar, with all the corresponding oils and souring, with the pictures facing away from each other, and I am lighting it with a black candle, I know I could have done it by simply stating my intention but as I felt "empowered" when praying with the candle I invoked the "spirit of hate" which just happened to pop up in my mind in the moment. My intention is for them to cut all type of communication, to start having trouble getting along, to lose all possible interest that they may have one to another, and as a result of this, souring everything between them as to stop any possibility of having something intimate or romantic.

Now that's one thing...

Then for the work I am doing to help us get closer to each other I have started working with a saint by lighting up a 7 day candle for her, talking to her, asking for help, and signs that she will help me or not with the situation. I have done come to me work before and I have had results, but of course I have been moving around with other things.

I just wanted to know if this seems wrong? For the separation and souring work I am invoking the spirit of hate, and for the love work I am invoking a saint of good.

I would have changed my use of the spirit of hate but when I called out to it was because the candle was already on and it just came to me in the moment, so I can't change that and stayed working with it for the separation.

Have I done wrong?

I know different situations call for different actions, one is for separation and one is for union, but I want to have some peace of mind by reading advice by people who may know more than me.

So long as your intentions are separate there is nothing wrong with working with spirits of different temperaments. Many of us conjure doctors do work with both darkers spirits and spirits of light and good.

I understand Hoodoo has a Christian influenced background but likewise understand that European Witchcraft has had its influence to the African - American tradition of Hoodoo.

My question is although i'm aware Saints are used in conjuction with various spells with Hoodoo curio, if one is coming from a Europian Witchcraft background and has a relationship with a magical task force of spirits, can they then add Hoodoo curio to their petitions to these spirits and spells in a similar fashion as one would with Saints when these spirits have roles and purposes to areas of life that the Hoodoo oil, powders, crystal etc are sympathetic to as method of layering magical technologies?

Say like using psychic oil with a orange vigil candle and petition with a spirit who is said to aid with prophetic dreams and visions.

Well first, saints are very small and rather regional introduction to hoodoo. So the idea of working with saints is gravely disproportionate online than what goes on in the vast majority of hoodoo.

Secondly, yes you can use hoodoo products to your other works. You're no longer doing hoodoo, but the products have an innate spiritual quality derived from the power of the roots, herbs, and curios. This spiritual potency works if applied even if you are not practicing hoodoo.

For example Goetic magicians used Black Arts oil on their candles and incense to burn for their spirits, ceremonialist use Abramelin products and so one and so forth.

Ah yes this was my reasoning behind it regarding the sympathetic magic qualities of the herb and root curios to the nature of the spirit work.

just so happens it is a grimoire i'm working with, i never thought of using black arts oil on my candles. i used psychic vision, spirit guide, and frankincense oil blend on the candles (frankincense is the staple for offerings in the grimoire i work with ) but may look into the black art one and see.

Depending on the spirits you work with, you should be very careful with Black Arts/Dark Arts products. There downright mean. They work by compelling a spirit, rather forcibly, in the same way that some Goetic magicians do, conjuring the spirit with potent names and threats. That said, some spirits love the stuff and will respond very well to it as an offering. So,yeah, just something to keep in mind.

They work by compelling a spirit, rather forcibly, in the same way that some Goetic magicians do, conjuring the spirit with potent names and threats. That said, some spirits love the stuff and will respond very well to it as an offering. So,yeah, just something to keep in mind.
ah perhaps not then - the work with the spirits is more devotional with book shelf to house their pots and offerings placed out for them rather than power of Christ compels you type thing. either or i think i'll maybe stick to the current blend. although the spirits come over as chthonic i dont feel per se that they or the work is a black art type thing, just a bit of a motley crew type magical task force.

Black Arts have been used as both an aid to conjure spirits and an offering to them for quite some time. Myself and various other Goetic mages who work in a far more "spirit-friendly" manner have used them it in this manner without ill effect.

The reaction is contingent upon the spirit, it will either please them or they wont. Spirits of a chthonic nature almost always love Black Arts oil and incense and its inclusion is great in conjuration--it does not have elements that harm spirits, merely aids in communcation with them, pact-making, and such.

Abramelin Oil, 711 Oil, and Power Oil have all be received well by the spirits I work with and you may consider using them.

1) After offerings are given, how long do you leave it on the altar? Is it for a week or when the offering becomes old?

2) I have offered bread, coffee and other food that becomes old. I have taken away the offering after a week. Was I wrong?

3) If working with a Saint for 2 months or more and results are not seen, can you stop working with the Saint without the Saint becoming upset?

4) What is the best way to stop working with a Saint who has not produced results?

5) Do I have to say anything or can I just remove Saint from altar and put away?

1 & 2: No, it is your call, after the bread becomes stale, you can scatter them under trees or such for birds to enjoy. The coffee can be disposed of in similar fashion. In other words, you are disposing of the remains for nature to take care of...

I am going to go a step further and repeat something I posted in Jan

-----
I cannot say it better than how cat worded the reasons for ritual disposal, "Because hoodoo is a form of "natural magic," one of its axioms is that the herbs, roots, minerals, and other items used in root-work are themselves inherently powerful, rather than having to be "consecrated," "empowered" or "charged" with energy in the neo-pagan manner. For this reason it is also very important in the hoodoo tradition to properly dispose of any material remnants that are left over after a spell has been cast, a mojo hand has been created, or a trick has been laid."

With that said, offering of food items can be fed to the birds or another environmentally friendly method of disposal. And it is not 'gotten rid of' it is a ritual disposal. FYI Laying Down Tricks and Disposing of Ritual Remnants in the Hoodoo Tradition http://www.luckymojo.com/layingtricks.html I hope this helps...
-----
3) Yes.

4) Respectfully! Thank him/her for their work...etc..etc...

5) Saints whom I have petitioned, whether they answered or not, remain on their perspective altars.

Hi tboy1977,

most of the questions and answers concerning this type of work are answered in this thread; it's worth reading through the entire thread.

If you have questions about work with any specific intercessors, you can find many of the most popular ones in the following board subsection: altar-tools,-religious-statues,-holy-ca ... o-f23.html

Happy reading.

1)
It depends on what the offering is. I typically leave the offerings on the altar such as food for a day or two. Then I dispose of them around my yard, or I dispose of them in a ritualistic way. Now if I am offering something like wine, or a bowl of water, I pretty much leave it on there until I work with the saint the next time or week. If its not gone then I dispose of it the same way.
2)
See Above, and no you were not wrong. It is important to dispose of things in a ritual manner. By disposing of the work in a ritual way you are allowing further direction of the work, and how it will take. Essentially, even though you have physically stopped working the spell, the work is still "working" per se.
3)

Yes, you can stop working with them. Simply stop petitioning them, and thank them for any movement they may or may not have brought to your situation.

4)See Above, and you may want to get a reading BEFORE working with the saint to A) see if they want to work with you in the first place regarding your matter, and B) if they will help bring you movement.

5) Do I have to say anything or can I just remove Saint from altar and put away?

See Number 3 and read the rest of the ENTIRE thread.
Thank u St. Martha for everything you have done on my behalf.

Hello everyone. Happy full moon in Aquarius!

I am posting this here because I believe "asking for help with Spirits" would be closest to what has been going on lately:

It seems that for some time now there has been a Djinn in my life. I have felt the presence of the Djinn and have not quite known what "to do" about it. I feel as if it is wanting to: 1) help me in some way , 2)perhaps work a trade of sorts (I feel as if this Djinn wants me to accomplish something in life that it cannot so easily, and that in return it will bestow something on me, and 3) that it has a presence here that actually coincides with, and sometimes enters into my dog (which, interestingly, my husband brought home to me last fall, he found her in the woods).

I have never before experienced anything like this and would really like some pointers as to how to interact with this being. I am in no way frightened or intimidated. It's quite pleasant and a bit odd. I can't find anything decent in a google search and as a more scientific person, I don't know what literary databases to search online that might be helpful. Are there any books, AIRR workers, courses out there? This djinn does not appear to be leaving, and I would like to explore the relationship further.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

The more I think about this, the more I realize I should possibly be typing "djinni" as it's one being/entity, not two. Sort of tells you how much I know about this being.

I am deeply rooted in a yoga tradition and have studied astrology, Kabbalah and some pow-wow medicine. I have been doing "hoodoo" ever since I was a child, but didn't know what it was called. Lucky for me, I found this site and miss cat's books a couple years back. I am a very busy professional who unfortunately doesn't have as much time to devote to the study of hoodoo as I would like right now, however this site and the radio show have been super helpful.

And what's kind of interesting to me is that, about the same time I had an initiatory dream (last fall) about hoodoo, this Djinni came into my life. I didn't know what to think about it, it just seemed so matter of fact. I came home one day and announced to my husband " I have a genie". He looked at me the same way he looks at me when I say, " You know, I have two heads." Well, I knew about as much with my brain about genies as one from The I Dream of Genie era would- not jack. But the limited google search I ran convinced me that I had on some level at least properly identified this being. It's super pleasant, not overpoweringly so. Just seems nice. All I have done so far is acknowledge and greet it internally, that's it.

And as you can see by my user name, this being is a presence in my life at this time.

I've been feeling a conviction that I should seek to know a particular spirit guide or saint - a spirit that may be watching me, or willing to help me with my work.

I did a novena candle spell a couple of weeks ago - I used a white candle and Spirit Guide oil from LMCC, wrote a petition asking my spirit guide to make themself known to me or appear to me in a dream. I anointed myself with the oil and had intense and strange dreams most night, but nothing I could interpret well. Most of the dreams had something to do with water. I FELT very intensely during this period, and as soon as the spell was over I felt significantly less insightful and emotional. Less motivated, also.

I feel now that it was selfish and the wrong way to approach a potential spirit guide or saint - asking that they show themselves without seeking to find out about them first. I began reading about many saints, African powers, and voodoo lwas. La Sirene appeals strongly to me, and I have had many water dreams and have found many shells lately. The day after I found out about her I found a mermaid doll at work (I work at a vintage store).

My question is, is it misguided to seek a spirit guide for the sake of seeking one - or should one just petition saints that are associated with the causes they are doing work toward? And how does one go about finding out more about spirit guides - perhaps dead ancestors or others among the dead who may be watching or willing to help one?

Thanks in advance. You have all helped me very much already.

intersting working...iv had saints reach out to me in a dream I had st michael and st barbara standing in a beautiful church standing like statues but watching me the whole time.. other saints have worked for me from praying and dedicated prayer to them. also family members passes along can also work for you ( 3 things u asked about). its not selfish to seek them out but make sure you pay them or pray and dedicate to them when or after doing so. several can be assisting u from past on members, saints, guardian angels, personally being open and allowing them to help you has been a success to me. finding who exactly they are, id meditate asking to revel, pray to God asking him to make it known and also getting a reading from an AIRR member who specializes in working with spirits to help you. Good luck on your journey.

Seeing that La Sirene appeals to you, and you've seen the mermaid, the very least doing some formal work with Her may be in order. Just always remember, when working with the Loa, to make offerings to Legba first, so He will open the door and help you communicate. I have found Him to be a big help when working with newer energies. Ganesha, another road-opener, has also helped me.
And I don't think its selfish. Sounds like the very heart of the spiritual journey!

The choice is yours, of course. Most Catholic chruches have MANY saints in one church. For instance, see the picture on this page at AIRR:

Catholic Church Saints

Good luck!

Ive started feeding my spirit guides and ancestors a nice meal, I try to do this at least once a week, however I was wondering how long do i leave it on my altar?

1) until the small candle goes out -- which is about 3 hours?

2) or until the food turns bad?

3) or for a whole week?

I want to keep my spirits and ancestors, spirit guides and angles happy...

please help

I have a problem that has been plaguing me for some time now. I have this guy that nearly broke me down some time ago, and never apologized for it. He pulled up next to me one day and I can honestly say I saw the fear in him, but still no apology. I've walked around with so much anger and hatred that all I want is an apology because then maybe I can let this go. This guy can be a bit of a douche, and since it happened so long ago it pretty much is a difficult situation, plus when our fallout happened I told him I wanted an apology and he clearly said "I'm not apologizing". So my question is, which saint can I pray to for this situation?

I would personally just do a Reversal on him and then Cut and Clear so I could move on.

However, I guess you could try petitioning St. Jude, patron of lost causes, as it seems a lost cause that this guy will apologize.

Yea your right. I need to try the cut and clear seriously badly because even when I saw him last year and it appeared like he wanted to say sorry for a brief moment I forgave ,then grew angry again. This is eating me alive and has been for sometime now.
