Hoodoo Food! Conjure Cook-Off and Recipe Round-Up Cook Book

Unread post by catherineyronwode » Sat Mar 27, 2010 12:56 am

We have just published the rules for the First Annual Hoodoo Foods Recipe Round-Up AND the Hoodoo Food Conjure Cook-Off to be held May 8th, 2010 in Forestville, California in conjunction with a workshop on Cooking With Magical Herbs, presented by Lucky Mojo shop manager Robin Petersen.

Read the Recipe Round-Up rules here:

http://www.luckymojo.com/conjurecookoff.html

Enter your magical recipes in the Conjure Cook-Off, and win prize ribbons, just like at an old-fashioned county fair! The end result will be a book called Hoodoo Food! -- and yur recipes can be a part of it -- but only if you submit them to our judges by April 25th, 2010.

This will be an ANNUAL event.

Good luck and Good Cooking!

Miss cat,

I'm a conjuring cook since way back and love the idea of your cook-off and the resultant book! Although I am unable to attend and participate in the actual cook-off, I would very much like to submit some personal and old family recipes for inclusion in the book. May I do so?

Many thanks,

Michelle

Yes, you can be part of the Recipe Round-Up. Your food won't be eligible for county fair type prize ribbons, and you won't get a free book, cause that only goes to attendees, but if Robin selects one of your recipes, it WILL go in the booklet.

Should I plan on bringing all the knives and utensils I might need to serve my entry? Should I bring paper plates or a reusable plate for myself? And idea how many servings I should estimate bringing?

We supply utensils and serving plates -- we will be offering small "tasting" amounts, so quantity is not a big problem. We're flexible.

The "Hoodoo Food! The 2010 Conjure Cook-Off and Recipe Round-Up Cook Book" is for sale both at Lucky Mojo and through Missionary Independent Spiritual church.

The cost is $12.00 per copy.

All proceeds benefit the church.

Well, I do not know about Hoodoo Food but I love cooking. I often search new recipes on the internet and make them for my family, sometimes for myself :)

It is good if anyone can share some Hoodoo recipes here, maybe after this competition. Many thanks in advance !

And good luck to all of you :D

This forum is not a place to share cooking recipes -- it is for advice with Lucky Mojo products. We advertise the cookbook here because we support the church (they get free banner ads as well) and because we sell the church cook book at Lucky Mojo.

BOO-GRI-HF10 Hoodoo Food! The 2010 Conjure Cook-Off and Rootwork Recipe Round-Up $12.00

The good news is that there is going to be a SECOND cookbook published next May -- the 2011 edition -- and you can enter recipes NOW!

All recipes collected and published become the copyright property of Missionary Independent Spiritual Church -- which sells the booklets as a fund-raiser to pay for telephone bills and so forth.

Read the Recipe Round-Up rules here:

Send your Hoodoo Foods recipes for the 2011 Conjure Cook-Off and Recipe Round-Up book to Sister Robin Petersen at the following email address:

Here's a picture of the cover of the 2010 Hoodoo Food Conjure Cook-Off and Recipe Round-Up Cook Book -- and an Add To Cart button!

All recipes have been submitted by our faithful customers, clients, students, and parishioners, making it a nice little collectible at a cute little price. Next year there will be another booklet and the next year another -- and then we will compile them into one complete paperback book with a full-colour cover!

I was fortunate enough to attend Sister Robin's class in 2011 and receive this wonderful cookbook. It was a lovely event, so if you are contemplating buying the book, do so! Support the Ladies Auxiliary! I know I will do my best to send in a recipe for next years round-up.

I could not find any postings relating to the deadline for this years recipe submission deadline for the 2012 conjure cook off recipe book.

Does anyone have the date?

Thanks!!

The deadline for the cook book submissions is posted every year, starting in the January Lucky Mojo Newsletter for that year.

It always falls around April 1st. That date has now passed, and the cook book is fully typeset and at the printer!

But there is always next year! That's right, you can submit magical food recipes for the 2013 edition NOW!

Read the Recipe Round-Up rules here:

http://www.luckymojo.com/conjurecookoff.html

And here is the 2012 edition!

We are just about to assemble all of recipes for the 2013 edition of the annual "Hoodoo Food! Conjure Cook-Off and Recipe Round-Up" series. If you have not yet submitted your magical spell-food recipe, please send it ASAP to Sister Robin Petersen, robin@luckymoj.com

This is going to be a great addition to your magical library, and at a mere $4.00 per copy, these yearly booklets make wonderful gifts for all of your kitchen-witchy friends!

I typeset incoming recipes as i go. This year, for instance, i started with 2 recipes typeset that had been held over from previous submissions received AFTER last year's deadline but BEFORE this year's deadline.

Read the Recipe Round-Up rules here:

http://www.luckymojo.com/conjurecookoff.html

At the rate we are going, we will again have 16 pages for next year.

But looking ahead, at the rate of a 16-page booklet each year, here's what the future holds:

In 2013-- our 4th year -- we will have a new 16 page booklet and a cumulative total of 64 pages of magical cookbook recipes on board and typeset.

In late 2013, due to the extra recipes and subsidiary information we have accumulated, we will have 96 pages compiled and we will stop reprinting the 16-page booklets, and shift all of the material into the form of one trade paperback book with a full-colour glossy cover and sell it through Amazon!

Greetings! I have recently began studying about fermented foods. In a book on the subject I found information that in some societies fermenting vessels were considered to have a spirit that controlled the ferment. A person would have to call upon the spirit each time the brew was fermented. Also in other cultures people would say that a vessel "learned to ferment well" as if it were alive.

Now that I am consuming fermented foods for health is there any view that Hoodoo holds about certain foods? I'm not referring to individual spices but actual dishes, liquors, etc. Are there actually any dishes or drinks (to actually be consumed) that Hoodoo says have magical power?

Last is it possible to "enchant" (forgive the term use) dishes so that they have certain effects on the eater? (I mean that in a positive way).

Side note for my history knowledge:

Was there any fermented foods Afro-Americans produced themselves often?

In her book "Of Mules and Men" Zora Neale Hurston referred to a drink brewed up from beef bones, grapefruit peel, etc and the character called it "Low Wine". I was curious to know if there were others, hopefully some that I could make that are useful (I dont drink alcohol btw!).

Student_of_Life --

We have published four short cookbook collections of Hoodoo Food recipes so far and are working on having a regular book of them collected by the end of this year.

In answer to your query, yes, there are many alcoholic tinctures as well as other forms of food used in hoodoo magic. I suggest that unless you want to wait for the bigger compiled book, you purchase the four pamphlets (see above in this thread), plus a copy of "Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic" -- and check out this page, which is part of the information for entrants who submit food to the annual Conjure Cook-Off and Recipe Round-Up from which the recipe pamphlets have derived.

With all the illnesses people catch (and transmit) at my job, I'm interested in how to use healing herbs in cooking. The first example I can think of is the classic healing soup.

To clarify-- I'm not asking anything about using the nutritional or chemical properties of foods to directly heal the body-- I have plenty of info about that. I'm asking about bringing "healing energy" or "blessing energy" into food.

Does hoodoo have traditions like that? Making foods that have more healing power than nutrition would suggest?

I'm sure there are plenty of ways to pray over food that go above and beyond the old "God is good, God is great, let us thank him for our food" I grew up with. And I'm especially curious about how herbs can be used in cooking to add more than just flavor and color.

Perfect, that's exactly the sort of thing I was looking for! And my apologies about posting in the wrong section; I had searched in Healing/Blessing/Cleansing but didn't think to look in the Books section for a cookbook.

I bought this book a few months ago. So far I have only made four recipes, but my favorites have been the Fast Luck Punch, and the One Pot Protection recipe. I have made One Pot Protection many times. It is already one of my rotation recipes. It's soooo good and it's pretty easy.

Next I want to make the overnight Anise Dream Cookies.

Hi, Metalina,

Have you tried the little Stop Bothering Me chili balls yet? Those are great. I also made the Asparagus Manhood Style, but not as a man looking to please a woman, instead, I made it as a woman looking for a nice night with my own man, by adding a little of my stuff to it and .... um ... paying attention to the asparagus before I cooked them. It worked out very well, thank you. (blush!)

I will have to try those sometime! Thank you for the suggestion.

I have a fun story to share about the Fast Luck Punch. I always keep some in my fridge and offer it to my guests. Everyone loves it, and several people ask for it specifically, everytime they come over.

Well, my friend came over last night. She has recently gone through a breakup and needed to find an apartment fast. She had already decided where she wanted to live, made a deposit on it, and submitted her application, but they had been telling her it might be one or two months. Well, last night she had two glasses of my fast luck punch, finishing the current bottle. I told her how appropriate it was for her to be drinking it, and reminded her what it was for.

This morning she got a call from the apartment complex saying that they had an unexpected move out, and her unit will be available for her to move in tomorrow! That is some fast luck. Now I'm convinced that the last glass of the bottle is perhaps the most potent. ;)

Hoodoo Food! Um, YES!

I made "Bring Me Some Money Meatballs and had to substitute the nutmeg for thyme, (thank you Cat for HHRM. It's such a great resource). Added a packet of brown gravy mix and served it over rice (also for prosperity). My wife made a side of black eye peas and the dinner was delicious!

One caution, this is a very rich dish. I was thinking I was going to eat a lot more that what I actually did, so I doubled the recipe. Very filling and satisfying. If you don't yet have this book, pick it up, you'll be happy you did.

Metalina, wonderful testimonial on the Fast Luck Punch. I'm going to make this next.

Peter.
Thank you St. Jude for prayers answered

Greetings LuckyMojo Folks,

I am still wending my way through all these forums and trying to work out which section is optimal for which post, lol! I appreciate your patience and graciousness as I stumble along...

I am a home chef, and an auto-didact food historian. I love to research traditional dishes and recreate them as authentically as possible. What role does food, cooking, and food folklore play in hoodoo traditions? For example, in Celtic cultures, each holytide has its associated special foods, food taboos, and food folklore. So I am curious about food and cooking in hoodoo. Thanks for your time and input.

Blessings,
~ Lucibet

Hi, Lucibet,

First, to set you on a good path of knowledge, i suggest that you subscribe to the video channel of Cheyney McKnight. She is a professional historical re-enactor in Pennsylvania who presents the lives of enslaved and free black women in a variety of occupations, including culinary work. Her videos on Caesar the cook and the Philadelphia Pepper Pot Woman are classic.

As with all other traditional cultures, African American foodways carry recipes that are embedments from the past or from a lost home-region, recipes that are connected to holidays, recipes for "despised" or "poverty" foods that require elaborate preparation and are retained in the culture as"ordeal foods" that are secretly beloved as a mark of cultural unity, and adopted "high culture" foods that are displayed as a mark of upward mobility, social integration, or service to a conquering culture.

How such recipes relate to folk magic is tangential at best, because not all cooks are kitchen witches. However, our book "Hoodoo Food!" is an attempt to explore this area of overlapping culinary and sorcerous methodologies. If you read it in the context of the other botanical books we have published, a sort of Venn diagram will emerge in which three overlapping topics become clear: the medical, magical, and culinary uses of food, teas, and tonics. This is true in all folkloric cultures, of course, not just in African American culture. For instance, for a look at the magical culinary traditions of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, you can see the book "Trolldom" by Johannes Gardback, which we published, and also the magical foodways he documented in "The Black Folder."

To this must be added the long history of enslaved and free black women as domestic workers in white households and black men as chefs. The white enslaver's fear of being "fed" a magical concoction by one's own cook and the white love-lorn woman who resorts to the culinary magic of a wise black woman to restore her romance are both tropes in 19th century literature.

There is enough here to get you started thinking. I could write a lot more, and footnote it, but i haven't time today. We can discuss this in the the student group, if you do join.

New Years is here! Be ready for the New Year with a cook book filled with delicious dishes with magical intent. It is traditional practice in Hoodoo to use tricked food in spell work, such as a honey jar to sweeten a loved one, or to eat a special meal to bring luck into the New Year.
