I have been on a roll lately, adding a page a day to the Lucky Mojo Pile of Trained Electrons. Most of the material is in support of products that we sell, so it is probably not all that thrilling to students of the rootwork course -- except Carla, who always asks about new products:-) -- but i do want to mention that in connection with some catalogue updates to our incense listings i made last night, i have thoroughly also revised the text of the HITAP page on Incense at

great site!!! love all the pictures. I wanted to ask about your incenses I am used to burning traditional incense sticks and joss sticks and even the tarry dhoop kind of stuff, it smells so great! but I'm not sure how to use your powdered incenses, do I need charcoal or what??? Thanks!

burning powdered incense is different than burning resin incenses, which one burns in portions upon charcoal disks. each Lucky Mojo formula powder contains saltpeter, which is a natural combustible that keeps it burning after it is lit (that's why it is called 'self-lighting', because it keeps itself lit over time). if one burns such a powder on charcoal (try it sometime if you're curious, i have and it was kind of interesting), it combusts extremely quickly and almost evaporates without leaving any scent whatsoever (a waste of both charcoal and incense powder).

the trick is to get the powder into a form that will allow it to be lit easily and to burn properly. the conventional method for burning powdered incense is to shape it as a cone. this is described by catherine and illustrated with photographss by Carin Huber at:

briefly, one makes a cone shape by using a piece of paper turned upon itself. typically this is done in small size, comparable to the size that cone incense is sold by mass-manufacturers. packing the cone, the incense naturally clings to itself as one sets the cone upon a metal, stone, or other non-flammable surface where it is to burn. one may then light it with a match, and it should burn naturally away.

CAUTION: I have occasionally placed cones upon the end of my cheap wooden stick incense holder, and this eventually did set the holder itself aflame (additionally setting the altar to smolder!). this is why there are metal bases provided with many cones that are sold in packaging -- whatever they are set upon will be exposed to burning embers and should therefore be capable of holding them).

in terms of their size and shape, i don't know why one could not make a larger size for extravagant events (i'll test this someday soon with a medium size and see if there are burning problems), or make them into some other stable, essentially vertical shape for which one has a form. one's limitations here would depend on how well the powder cleaves to itself, since in a cone it forms a little pile, whereas other shapes may fray about the edges or collapse away due to the effects of gravity.

since these cones burn completely through, theoretically (test it and get back to us!) they might be placed aside one another and burned in sequence, even with different formulae powders (effecting, for example, a 'reversible' effect by burning an Uncrossing Powder cone and then some pro-active cone such as Blessing, Attraction, or Destruction Powder).

I can imagine a constructed vertical stand in which the bottom of one cone sets upon a disk with a hole allowing the protrusion of the next one below it so as to set up a multi-cone burn quite elegantly, but i have never seen such a contraption. most people just light them individually as they need them.

I absolutely love the powdered incense. I use a small candle snuffer to form my cone, just dip it into the package, pack it tight and tap it out into the burner and it usually retains its shape.

I pack my incense into an ordinary sewing thimble which I keep next to my incense burner. To unmold it, I tap it just like you'd tap a pail when making a sand castle. It usually unmolds perfectly, or at least well enough.

I do what Mother Mystic does, and when appropriate, I add tiny pices of Frankinsense and mix it up in my hand before puuting it in the Candle snufter.

What's great as well is that you can uniformly mix up different condition powdered incense inyour hand and then lpace it in the snufter.

And you can also add tiny pieces of appropriate herbs, though I recomend if you do this you have salt peter on hand and add a VERY tiny amount and mix it up.

I write my intentions on the cone incense paper/shaper and burn it all together in a metal bowl. It gets a bit smokey, but I feel it gives my work more push.

While it is common for people to smoke their mojos after anointing them, it is not necessary.

Smoking Mojo Hands.

I -always- smoke my Mojo Hands. Another client asked about a money mojo and I forgot to mention this. I treat mojo hands like spirits, and spirits like liquids and incense as offerings. When I start to make a mojo, I burn incense, I annoint the items with van van and pass them thru the incense. Then when the mojo is finished I pass it back and forth thru the smoke while praying. I also will pass any of my personal mojos thru the incense I have burning on the altar.

Smoking a Mojo:
Light incense, hold the mojo in your hand.
Waft your hand back and forth across the smoke of the incense.
Pray and command the mojo to work to your intention.
"As I feed you, so shall you work for me. As I honor you with incense, so shall you honor me with results. As I light incense under G-d's commandments, so shall I command you."
Thank it for its work.

In my Pyschic vision spell kit which I plan on doing it said if I got it correct make into the cone things then empty or put in bazier to burn what exactly is right to do(I hope a few of you know the kit) also I ordered seal of moon and power powder to do with this and the dressed candle if I do not receive it by the time I start can i add these to the mojo bag or when I redress it or something?if not I will skip it

You need to make it into a cone if you want to burn it straight. It is self lighting, but if you just dump it in a burner without making a cone it is not going to burn for a period of time, each little clump with light up and then go out and you will have to keep lighting it--I have tried this. If you don't want to make it into a cone you can burn it on a charcoal brickette. I hate burning charcoal inside and I love the pure smell of LMC incenses so I do not like to do it this way. Buy a $3 candle snuffer and make the cones, you will be glad you did.

Hi guys

Here in Arabia we Burn Incence allot. We burn it on charcoal on pretty wodden Burners and we simply sprinkle the powdered incence directly on top of the hot coals which is carried by the wodden Burner.
It creates a wonderful smoke aroma which fills the air and gives a distinctive smell. Its part and parcel of any true Arab home and is perfomed 2- 3 times sometimes a day to remove bad smells, and bad omens, spirits from home, It is called BAKHOOR or incence in english.

The LM incense already has ingredients for it to burn on its own. As Miss Cat said to check the page on this. It is really easy to use paper to make your cones. Make a small square of paper and then twist into cone,i snip to make it even on the bottom, pack and place down, tap and you got it.

It will help you get started, but for substantial results, it's always best to dedicate some of your time, energy and materials. That is to say, you'll be much happier by doing a proper spell than just relying on incense alone. Eggs are just one ingredient in a cake.

While all of the spiritual incense formulas will have an effect all by themselves, some jobs are better suited to them than others. If you are trying to cleanse a space and all you have is, say, Cast Off Evil incense, that might do an ok job (although washing the floors down and lighting a candle along with the incense would be even better). In contrast, if you are looking to attract money using only Lodestone incense...not such a good fit. The formula Lodestone works much better in concert with a real lodestone (or lodestones). Also, incense works better as a means to create a specific atmosphere in the place where it is burning than it does as a long-distance attraction agent (dressed candles and lodestones are better suited to longer-range work).

For example: If you are burning Money Drawing incense *by itself* in your place of business during business hours, it may work very well for that purpose.
In contrast, if you are burning Money Drawing Incense *by itself* in the dead of night in your otherwise empty house (that, for the purpose of this example, we will assume is not a space connected to the means by which you make your money), it is unlikely to garner your desired results.

Likewise, if you are only burning Come To Me incense to attract love (no bath, no candle, no prayer, no mojo, etc.), the incense will work better if it is burning in the same place where you and your desired one are (wherever that place may be); the incense will be far less effective *by itself* if it is burned *by itself* in a place and time separated from the time and place where your potential love and you actually interact.

Your question doesn't make much sense. Oils and incense powders are used differently and you can't switch an oil for its incense. Read these pages:

Are you asking if powders are better than oils?
They both have different uses.
I like using powders more than oil, just my opinion because sometimes oil can make a mess and smells things up too much. I usually make my own powders by grinding them and adding talcum powder or baking powder, Cat has plenty of information on her site. Follow the links.

No, incense powders are meant to be burned. You can mix them with dirt to make foot-track spells, and you can also use them to stuff dolls, but they do not belong in honey.

The oils are used to dress candles (which can be burned on honey jars if you wish) or to wear. They are not edible, so you would not put them into honey or sugar if you were going to use the sweetener in a cooking spell.

You can. Its traditional, people do it, I do not recommend it personally because I have had experiences where the incense powders kind of flare up and mess up the way that the wax runs. I do candle divination so I need an undisturbed wax puddle so I prefer using sachet powders to dress my candles, but you can use incense and people do.

Not generally in the habit of necroposting, but since I didn't want to start a new thread just for this, a friend discovered another nifty and cheap device for cones: pastry bag tips are good for smallish cones.
I tried the paper thing but I have arthritis in my thumbs so it's difficult to hold the paper for long enough.

I tried the various tips/utensils for burning the lucky mojo powdered incense that have been suggested on this link, however I have had the best success with a pastry tip # 23. It unmolds in a perfect cone.

I've found using a small cast iron pot with sand in it the best way to use the powdered incense. I just spoon a little on top of the sand, and give it a light. Since it's self lighting, I usually don't have a problem with it going out.

It's actually a bit thicker, but lasts less time because you're making small cones from the incense powders. So it might be a trade-off there. If you only did one cone of the LM incense, it would probably be less smoke than a stick overall. But if you want the incense to burn during your entire work (as I like to) then you'll end up with much thicker smoke than you would have with a stick.

I recently received both St. Expedite and Attraction powdered incense from LM -- the fragrance of each is delightful. I found the smoke to be quite heavy, but I enjoy watching it. I won't say I use it in a divinitory way, but I do ponder its movement and patterns while I go about my work. It is far superior to any incense I have ever used and I can't wait to try some of the other varieties.
As for being discreet, if all of the incense (not counting those used for crossing and such) smell as great as the ones mentioned above, it would be pretty easy to claim you are using the incense as an "environmentally friendly, all natural" air freshener.

During the warm extended days of Spring and Summer I seem to intuitively be attracted to burn Van Van for protection, keeping off the energy of others, and all around good luck on a weekly basis.

But during the colder Fall and Winter seasons I'm more attracted to burning Dragon's Blood for similar reasons.

I don't recall any past cultural family traditions re this pattern, but am wondering if anyone out there also changes which incense they use based on the seasons (in addition to the desired spell work of course), and if there's any Hoodoo readings I can find re the above.

In addition to being used for protection, and good luck I've read that Dragon's Blood strengthens spell work when added and is especially good to include w/work related to love/sexuality, which are purposes I'm assuming Van Van is not used for ...

At any rate all feedback will be greatly appreciated.

I know many people who prefer to be surrounded by certain scents depending on the amount of sun they are exposed to, temperature, and season so I think that what you are saying makes sense. VanVan is used for many things in Hoodoo, it is the go to formula for anointing talismans, especially the lucky rabbit foot, it is used to open the way and clear out obstacles, to clean and bring in good luck.

Thanks Bri - makes complete sense then. Yes, I am a lover of VanVan ... I infuse my body and hand lotions with the LM oil and it is a great balance stabilizer for me. It is one of the first Hoodoo products I used (both incense and oils), and I brought it w/the intent of clearing out negative/lower energies that can drain me as well as increasing the level of good luck in my life. What I've noticed is that it helps me remain centered/calm (which is damn good for a passionate person such as myself), allowing me to influence my environments by neutralizing any intense/high voltage situations/interactions.

Dragons Blood is very intriguing in that I sense it's ability to empower, but in a wise (not so flamboyant/extroverted) way.

I truly love both of these products!!

Can anyone help me.

I have insence resins and herbs but I have difficulty keeping my insence going.

I have to keep lighting a match and swirling it round or blowing on it while doing my ritual otherwise it just goes out. It is quite off putting and makes me lose concentration until it is lite again.

Is there an ingredient I am missing that is needed to keep it going.

Hello,

I have one question:

When Lucky Mojo directions say something along the lines of "making the incense into cones on an incense burner", could anybody please tell me what that means??
I just can't imagine grabbing powdered incense and trying to put it together and shape it with my fingers into a cone shape.
Do you have to wet it to make some kind of paste and then shape it? Would it burn, if you wet it first?
Or are they referring to incense sticks, you grab three of them and place them in a cone shape?
I guess this question must sound really dummy...

you can use one of those candle stuffers, or wooden scoops (they're both available at Lucky Mojo) that will shape the incense into cones. or you can even make a paper cone and use that.

don't wet the incense powder. sometimes i just pour the incense into the burner. it burns just fine.

LM incense powder is a loose powder that you have to form into a cone shape to burn. (You could also just burn it loose on a charcoal, but I find it burn WAY fast that way - it's better to just use it by itself in a cone.)
I use my fingers to shape the powder into a cone and then light it. It takes a little practice to pack it nice and tight with your fingers, but you can do it and it works. Other people have mentioned using icing-bag tips, or other cone shaped items as a form. I just use my fingers, personally.

Another way is to pack it in a thimble and then turn the thimble upside down into an incense burner = instant cone.

If you're using a paper cone or other shaper, then you pack the powder into that FIRST, THEN you put it into the burner.

In Cat's Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic book, there are reconciliation love spells that involve folding certain herbs in a name paper with both lover's names then throwing it on burning charcoal.

I'm very confused. I'm now under the impression that burning a name paper will destroy the spell's influence, but it does make sense to have a name paper in the love incense. I've been burning reconciliation incense with love herbs wrapped in a name paper thinking that the other person would receive the message. Have I been defeating the purpose?

Intention is what really makes the difference and the context it is being used. If you are burning a paper to destory its influence then that's what you are going to get. Since you are focusing on sending a message, then that is different. You can also smoke papers and other items in incense to channel the power you are seeking. Just like when you have a petition that you anoint with oils then smoke in incense before you toss in a mojo bag.

I have been burning various candles on my honey jar and have some petition candles set for me at LM as well. Today I started a seven knob candle and decided to burn some Love Me incense. It's really lovely.

So now I'm thinking maybe I'll order some other incenses.

What are your favorites?

Do you burn them with honey jar candles and others?

I think they're all pretty nice actually. Fast Luck, Attraction, Love Me, Fiery Wall of Protection are all frequent ones. Since I now know that the LM incenses are so amazing, I try to get a packet or two of each incense to go with each oil that I buy.
