Hi there,

I am just wondering if anyone has had experience in using specific Tarot cards from either the major or minor arcana on a hoodoo altar (example: perhaps using pentacles suit for wealth, etc....)?

Thanks

I have done this before solely for the symbolism contained within the particular card. I find it works very well for me to do so.

I will also turn cards during a longer spell and keep a record of those cards turned. Many times I will place those cards on my altar to meditate on whilst working said spell.

Thank you for the quick response. To further that, I'm assuming that using a combination of cards layed down in a particular spread could be a very specific way of asking for something in the form of a petition. So in addition to writing something on parchement paper, one could lay out the cards in a specific diagram with each card representing a desired outcome or at least influence to come into your life (or another's)?

As cards really do have a life of their own, I've always been fascinated by how one could utilize this in a talismanic sense.

Well since there is no one way to do a Hoodoo altar I am sure the answer to your question is yes! :-)
Like Joseph I work with the cards when I create altars for clients, sometimes I affix them to vigil candles, sometimes clients ask that their petitions be written on copies of the cards. Reading with tarot cards is one of the more popular forms of divination and most modern day root workers do work with these cards. But you could also use regular playing cards or Lenormand cards in the same manner.

I love the Gypsy Witch cards. When I was a little girl my aunt read with these & tarot. I learned the tarot but when I was old enough got a deck of these. I don't know why I am so attracted to them but I am. I also read the Lenormand which I think is very accurate at divining for root work. I have had lots of success with these, but usually read them Lenormand style instead of reading the words.

I use the Tarot cards in this manner. I often will place three cards around the work that reflect the spiritual forces I'm tapping into.

This is a three fold question in one. I was raised since the age of 9 reading tarot cards as I grew up in a family who did. I began studying Hoodoo through this site a few years ago. While far from an expert in Hoodoo I am versed in it.

1) I am trying to come up with LM products to cleanse & prepare an old deck or prepare a new deck. My idea for cleansing the cards would be to smoke them in LM Van Van, then white a white candle with Blessing oil, then put some psychic vision powder on them and perhaps shuffle the powders into the cards, then maybe lastly smoke them with Frankincense for spirituality.

2) is there any traditional Hoodoo way of Blessing the cards?

3) I also knew a reader growing up who you could order cards from, and she would have you wait a few days so she could put her spirits in them. I know for a fact his reader did Hoodoo because all of the spells she did, were definitely Hoodoo based. I know Hoodoo is also a mixture of people's interpretation of it, so the Spirit thing could have just been her thing. But did anyone ever hear of that?

Any ideas ?

I've heard of some practices when one first gets a deck that involve some rituals that take days or weeks in order to install a spiritual presence in them. This was in relation to a specific spirit that they were using as a Spirit of Divination and it ensured that spirit's willingness to recognize and utilize that deck as a tool of communication. However I have never done such.

I don't get overly complicated with my cards and oracles. I pray before each reading, and I have a Psychic Vision mojo that I wear when I'm doing divinations. I'll usually spritz my cards with a cleansing spray before I pick them up to shuffle on the query - sometimes Florida Water, though you could make one yourself out of some Psychic Vision or Master Key or Spirit Guide bath salts dissolved into some water you put into a spritzer, or whatever else you feel is appropriate. I'll spray myself with that same mixture, and usually put a dab of a blend of those 3 oils onto my hands before shuffling the cards. All of that takes me about 1 minute, so nothing too complex or involved. I also prefer to have some kind of incense burning as a read, I may use frankincense & myrrh, or Psychic Vision depending on how the mood strikes me.

I smoke my cards with incense from time to time. I also use a small amount of oil on my hands (not too much, eek) and handle the deck. This seems to work very well for me. I will include them on my altar when doing work for myself regarding Psychic Vision. I hand sewed a small purple pouch that I keep them in when they are not in use.

Now I'm wondering how each of you reading this cleanses and "cleans" your tarot decks?

1) This sounds good.

2) Place the opened deck on a small pedestal (like a candle stand) or in a small saucer in a triangle of three 4" altar light candles dressed with Blessing Oil or Van Van Oil plus Blessing Oil. The pedestal or saucer is simply to protect them from the possibility of wax running on the table and touching them. Burn the lights in sections, over the course of 7 days, or, if you want to be very elaborate, get three times seven candles, one set of three for each day of the week's planetary colours, and burn each set out in one day, for a seven-day burn.

3) Yep. i have heard of such things. What i described at (2) above is part of this -- just call in the spirits as you do the work and there you are!

This is amazing thank you Devi, Joseph & Cat. When I am reading for people I do take a candle white or blue & bless it with LM Psychic Vision, Clarity & Crown of Success oils. I pray over the candle that I may have the vision using , that I have the clarity to actually read the cards accurately and then Crown of Success so that my readings are successful. I used to burn incense but my significant other isn't fond of, it , so I got an oil burner and I put in LM psychic vision oil and I will say my readings were spot on that day, my clients felt good energy, all of them commented that day, and asked what I burned.

I am going to mix a blend of LM powders. I just got inspired by one of Cat's other posts. I am going to get, LM Psychic Vision powder, Master Key & Blessing. I am going to use this blend of powders every Sunday or once a month to bless my cards. I think I will also burn a candle as Cat suggests above with it on Sunday.

It is funny, I have most of LM oils, a lot. And out of all, I thought Blessing would be used least of all. It is almost gone, this is my go to oil. I use it for everything. Out of all the oils I thought Psychic Oil or Money House Blessing, would be used most. Nope, the Blessing. I use it for everything. Also, and I don't know if anyone else does this little secret, every candle I make I blessed first with a tiny bit of LM Special Oil #20, wow, it really boosts the energy. In fact my clients who I make candles for, at times, when I use this, say they can feel a vibration off of the candles. It is amazing.

Oh man I love LM's Psychic Vision products. It is probably one of my favorites and really shows how high quality their products are. I anoint my head and hands with the oil before I do readings and it packs a punch.

I put new divination tools in a ring of Van Van and Blessing candles and then smoke them with Psychic Vision and Master Key and dust them lightly with Money Drawing and Steady Job since I work a professional reader.

Generally, most resources on card reading tell you to not to use your reading decks for playing games, I've even heard people say they shouldn't be riffle-shuffled. This information tends to get passed all over the internet and books, but I've never seen any sources cited that might point to the origin of the belief. I suspect it might be relatively modern, but I'm not sure.

I can see some psychological benefit in treating a reading deck "special", at least while you're learning. It would become a kind of trigger to put you in "reading mode". I kind of question the practice after you've been reading so long it's second nature, though. At least from the psychological angle.

One of my oracle decks even suggests in the Little White Book (LWB) (I know LWB's are usually worthless, in the practical sense, but some of them are fun) that the cards be used in various solitaire games and read afterwards, there's a game where you put together books of pairs and then read the last pair, as well as some other games. And of course a lot of french oracles are titled "le jeu" (game) this or "le jeu" that. On the other hand, these are solitaire games, people aren't handling your cards.

I imagine that in the old days a lot of people would have had maybe one or two decks around the house and if they read, they wouldn't have had a problem using a deck that did double duty.

What I'm trying to find out here, in my roundabout way, is whether Hoodoo tradition inclines more toward treating a reading deck as a sacred object, or the more practical approach of not worrying about that and reading with what's handy? And when/where did this "don't read a deck you play with" idea get started? Thanks. 8-)

Tarot Card Superstitions

I am 64 years old. I learned to read cards at the age of 8. I have been a professional card reader since the age of 18. Until your post today i have never heard, "You must not read a deck you play with."

I would classify

"You must not read a deck you play with"

right up there with restrictive anti-magical myths like

"A tarot deck will not work if it doesn't have the infinity symbol somewhere on the deck."

"You cannot buy the deck yourself, someone has to give it to you as a gift."

"You must never riffle shuffle."

"You must never let anyone touch your cards."

And, my favorite, because it was a blatant steal from Chinese I Ching concepts:

"You must keep your tarot cards wrapped in yellow silk."

I don't know who starts these things, but they are dang stupid.

Thanks for that, Miss Cat. It always smelled a little funny to me, and now I have confirmation.

I'll file it with the others you mentioned. Oh, and this one: "You must bond with a new deck by sleeping with it under your pillow."

Gypsy Witch is great. 8-) Like Miss Cat says on the site, the playing card images are pretty random. I ignore them, but in Lenormand itself most people ignore the playing card insets other than the face cards, so it's all good. It's not the prettiest deck in the world but it has a fantastic old timey vibe, at least for me...like something you might read on a plank table by the light of a kerosene lamp.

Wouldn't recommend using it professionally, at least for in-person readings. Phone readings are fine, but these cards can look rather alarming to people who aren't used to them. I think Miss Cat also mentioned something like this, that the deck looks like it might have been intended to scare people and set them up for candle burning scams.

But they're a lot of fun and they read true, I've gotten some striking predictions out of them that panned out perfectly. Along with Old Gypsy (which was pretty much a Gypsy Witch knockoff, marketed as a toy in the 40's), it was probably the closest thing we had to Lenormand here in the US pre-internet.

This may be a bit of a silly question, but do you find (and this is anyone who has been reading tarot for a while) that you still refer to what books have said for what cards mean or is it 50/50 with what books say and your own personal intuition? Or do some cards mean something else for you?

I have the Arthurian Tarot deck which my mom bought for me when I was 16, and I have dabbled with readings and I want to get more into it, I just find that sometimes, some of what the cards are saying throws me for a loop. I just ordered the Rider-Waite tarot deck from lucky and I am hoping as a "new" beginner deck that might help me, I find that the Arthurian deck intimidates me sometimes. :P

The Tarot cards act as little files for me. There was a time when i stuck to the meaning of the books, but over years and years I find cards associated with certain experiences, feelings, and ideas so I find that they are much closer tied to my intuition over anything else.

Take a look at the Marseilles tarot -- which is THE classic deck. Although I do not personally use it (I prefer the Rider-Waite-Smith), it has thousands of devoted adherents, who prize it for its ancient symbolism and style:

Hi katrink,

I'm with ConjureMan Ali on this one. The cards opened themselves once I let go of the instruction book and let them speak for themselves. That's not to say that I don't still have my favourite reference guides that I enjoy flipping through or using as bath-tub reading since every time I go through them, another subtlety of a card will imprint itself on my mind and be absorbed into the well-spring from which readings rise ;) Ultimately however, intuition leads.

Thank you for all the replies! It's interesting to hear how people interpret their cards. :)

I just realized when I ordered my mini Rider-Waite deck from the shop I forgot to order a book with it. I am just doing up my stuff I want for this month and I am wondering which book do you think I should get?

Pictorial Key To The Tarot by Arthur Edward Waite -> BOO-DIV-PKTT
or
Introduction to Tarot by Susan Levitt -> BOO-DIV-ITTL

Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. :)

Both the Pictorial Key and the Introduction have illustrations. Pictorial Key was actually written to go with the cards over 100 years ago and predates all of the various "little white books" that come in modern decks -- except, of course, it is much bigger and better. No theories, just the interpretations. I consider it essential, but i'm an old fogey.

This isn't really Hoodoo so I hope it's ok to post it here, if not, feel free to delete and I won't be offended. It's just such a find that I couldn't resist, and I saw Miss Cat's old Lenormand posts in the Archive from back when she was first researching the deck, so this might be of interest.

There's a lot of stories making the rounds that the deck started in France, even that Mlle. Lenormand herself used it. (It was a common 19th century sales technique to attribute fortune telling cards to Mlle. Lenormand, Gypsies, or both.)

This never seemed right to me, French art tends to be rococo and all my French oracle decks show busy images, usually with multiple characters acting out the scenes. German art, on the other hand, is more cut-and-dried, tends to be less busy and seemed more likely for this deck, since each card tends to depict a single image, like a dog, ship, or heart.

In time I started seeing references to a German game called Das Spiel der Hoffnung, published in 1800 by G. P. J. Bieling-Dietz of Nuremberg. It was a board game where the 36 cards were laid in a square and the players rolled dice to advance around the board. Landing on certain cards meant you had to retreat, and the person who made it around the board first won.

Today I was fortunate enough to see the actual images for the very first time. The cards have the same numbers, playing card insets (the only difference being that there are two per card: German suits on the left, French on the right) and images as the Lenormand, conclusively proving that this was the origin of Lenormand cards. And...the leaflet that accompanied the game also suggested a simple question and answer whereby 32 cards laid in eight rows of four might answer questions. ;)

Here you go!

As described by the British Museum, that is not a board game. It's a pack of pasteboard playing cards. It is not a proto Lenormand deck -- it just *is* a Lenormand deck. "Description. Cards with French suits: complete pack of 36 playing-cards:"

Ms. Cat had some great work on this at the cursing workshop last Sunday.
It was in regards to cursing but could be adapted to anything. It's actually really exciting, similar to Miss Bri's use with the candle, but with a little twist I wouldn't have thought of.

If anyone missed it, my understanding is that we can order the "LUCKY MOJO FLYERS, COMPLETE SET IN REPORT COVER" in a couple weeks and it will include all the workshop flyers, including the tarot cursing flyer.

I love using cards in ALL of my work. It helps to focus the intentions as well. you can takeout just one card, or pull 3 or several cards and put them in an order to focus the intentions.
Thank u St. Martha for everything you have done on my behalf.

I saw that Miss Cat sells the Aleister Crowley Thoth Deck in the Lucky Mojo Catalogue.

However, it is the deck that I plan to purchase over the next few weeks.

Is anyone familiar with this deck?

Several of the reasons why I'm purchasing this deck is:
  • Astrological and Kabbalistic Correspondences
  • Beautiful artwork by Lady Freida Harris
  • The fact that the cards are a little bigger and will fit myhands
  • I'm ready to move beyond Rider Waite
Any recommendations, advice, or suggestions?

I started off reading the Thoth deck, before switching primarily to the Rider-Waite-Smith. It is a gorgeous deck, and I still keep it in rotation during my practices and readings. My Thoth is actually slightly smaller than my RWS, and more flexible, as it isn't as aggresively laminated. It handles beautiully, and reads well. I think the Thoth and the RWS are both equally complex, just (as you pointed out) in different ways. If you listen to the Lucky Mojo Hoodoo Rootwork Hour, you will hear a few readers who use the Thoth; Lukianos is the one I remember most surely, but I believe that both Lou Florez and Miss Benedikte used it as well.

I just recently had a wonderful reading from Mary Bee, who was using it then, too.

I don't think it's a deck you can go wrong having around.

Hi ConjureWitchery,

I read with the Thoth deck for global life trends and spiritual growth issues. It's beautiful, complex and like you, I love the artwork. Personally, I don't consider it ''beyond'' or ''better'' or ''more profound'' than the Rider-Waite deck, it simply has different strengths and portrayals of certain situations. Either it agrees with you or it doesn't. But like Mr. Hob, I don't think you'll go wrong with the purchase.

Blessings.

Anyone ever used, Guide to the fairy ring deck? I have had the easy tarot deck for awhile, but we weren't compatible, but with the fairy ring, i feel a bond like never before. Anna franklin is the author, and paul mason the illustrator.

Hi talismanpower,

You won't get website recommendations on this forum which is devoted to Lucky Mojo products; however you will find a lot of useful information to answer your question in this thread. You should also check out the occult library at the LM on-line store which has many fun titles to salivate over: http://www.luckymojo.com/mojocatbooks.html

Blessings and happy reading!

I just read the Ana Cortez Playing Card Oracles book and have been using the cards and so far I really like it. What's really intriguing is that they (her father designed the cards) tie it to geomancy for an additional level of reading which, even if I move on from her specific system I think I'll continue to use the geomancy part.

Yes I love them. I had a deck years a go and sold it. I have always just used the Rider-Waite deck in my readings. I got another deck of Lenormand two years back and while I was studying hoodoo in theory and practice, I decided to try it for root work remedies, for myself. I think any deck you work with works for you, but these cards are often overlooked.

n00b (now mumma) -- like many of the binary systems (based on two, four, 16, etc.), The Four Aces is a quick system and not everyone can find meaningful results in it. The more complex binary systems, such as I Ching, with 64 hexagrams plus 256 changing lines, tend to be more trusted than simple coin-flips, with only two results (heads or tails). However, simple binary systems using materials reasily to hand, like coins or playing cards, are always popular and do provide serviceable results for minor queries. They are not artfully interpretive, in the way that a gifted tarot reading is, but they also have the advantage of being very easy to learn, and they are free of charge to the user.

Thanks for the note on the omissions above -- i fixed 'em.

Yes, I was led to the part about the board game by A Wicked Pack of Cards: The Origins of the Occult Tarot by Decker, Depaulis and Dummett: ""Detlef Hoffmann has shown that their prototype can be clearly traced back to a lovely little pack of fancy cards, called 'Das Spiel der Hofnung (sic) / Le jeu de l'espérance' (The Game of Hope), published around 1800 by G.P.J. Bieling in Nuremberg." (p. 141)

From German wikipedia http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenormandkarten
"Detlev (sic) Hoffmann has demonstrated in 1972 that the Spiel der Hoffnung (Game of Hope), with 36 cards, second revised edition (published in 1800 by GPJ Bieling in Nuremberg) was only secondarily conceived as a fortune telling game and was properly a racing game with 2 dice..." (there's more but I can only get a bad computer translation. I ran it by a native speaker and they told me what I put in the OP.)

I really should have cited that in the beginning, so apologies, Miss Cat!

And it IS a Lenormand deck, regardless of what they were calling it or how they were using it. :)

Hi I was wondering if anyone knew of an animal tarot card deck that "matched" the symbolism and use of the rider waide tarot deck, I've found some online including the animal divine, but this is my first tarot deck and I would like to find a deck that matches the original rider waide as closely as possible without "cat people" animal hybrids etc. any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, I've had some form of tarot cards or runes for many years & have read for myself & those close to me. Recently I've become much more interested in divination and have been studying other methods.

1) I've been looking for some Oracle of Belline cards but haven't found any new ones. Are these cards still made?

2) If not I've always heard that you can't use someone else's cards, but I would think that it would be ok as long as they were properly cleansed of negative energy. Does anyone have any advice on this subject?

Hi Lauralee. To answer your questions:

1) Lucky Mojo does not currently carry the Oracle Belline. It's not a relatively well-known deck outside of the Francophonie, the way that Mlle Lenormand's contribution to cartomancy has been. It is still being made but would need to be imported from France or Québec. Because this forum is an extension of the shop, we won't discuss where to purchase it from.

For those wondering what this deck is about, it was allegedly created by Jules Charles Ernest Billaudot (1829-1881), also known by the name Mage Edmond. In his time, he was a well-known seer, reading for contemporary celebrity figures such as Alexandre Dumas, Napoléon III, Empress Eugénie, and Victor Hugo. In fact, he successfully predicted Hugo's exile to Jersey. Some have speculated that Mage Edmond may have even been a student of Mlle Lenormand.

Fast-forward to the 20th century. Belline was a seer operating from the same street that Mage Edmond did in Paris, from the 1950s-1980s. Belline discovered Mage Edmond's 53-card deck, named it Oracle Belline, and published it through Grimaud in 1961. He also discovered the Grand Tarot Belline and that was published as well.

It is a very interesting deck and I really encourage people to check it out. The deck consists of 53 cards, each having the symbol of one of the seven sacred planets. Each card has a symbolic picture and a keyword. For example, Card 11 has the symbol for the Moon on it and shows a very angry black cat with the keyword "Betrayal". All the works published on reading with it, however, are in French. There was a deck published called the New Belline with updated artwork and keywords translated into English, Spanish, German, and Chinese alongside the original French.

2) Some people don't like others handling their decks, some do. Many people encourage their clients to shuffle and cut the deck during a reading. There is no inviolable rule that you can't use someone else's deck. If the owner of the deck gives you their permission then go for it.

For cleansing decks - whether your own, someone else's, or one that was gifted to you - you can waft them through the smoke of Lucky Mojo Van Van Incense.

PS: Apologies to the forum moderators, who may wish to relocate these posts to the Oracle Card Reading thread. You guys do such great work at keeping the forum organized! It is really appreciated. :D

Hi, Lauralee --

1) We do not carry the Oracle of Belline.

2) I work with previously owned cards all the time. I have never believed all that hooey about how you must never never never use them. Sure, if they feel bad or wrong to you when you get them, then smoke them in some Van Van incense to clear them -- but if they feel really "right," you may actually pick up the GOOD VIBES of the previous owner, who, for all you know, was a gifted psychic! There is no reason to assume the negative when you can assume the positive!

Hey, Tristan --

Thanks for the replies -- and thanks for the reminder to relocate this thread to the Oracle cards thread! I have done so!

And, just in case anyone wonders what my own favourite oracle card deck is -- that would be the Art Deco deck cited above.

Another deck i like a lot is the Lenormand set marketed under the name "French Cartomancy," shown here:

Ditto on the French Cartomancy Lenormand, it's been my purse deck since it came out. Don't leave home without it!

There's another version of the Belline by a guy named Medlindaf. I haven't made a study of it, but I'm told he spent 15 years on it, correcting mistakes (the Belline was taken from the work of Mage Edmond). The infamous 'eagle and toad' card was actually supposed to be a courbel - like a vulture, which it got updated to. And the frog was actually a salamander. It's called the Tarot d'Eltynne. The only drawback (and this is purely subjective) is the digital art...too slick and contemporary for my taste. But a lot of people seem to prefer it over the Belline.

If you get the French Cartomancy, you might forget all about it though. Lenormand is scary accurate. :)

Hey stelz,

thanks for mentioning the Tarot d’Eltynne. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for more information on it.

My favourite deck that Lucky Mojo Sells is the Jeu du Destin Antique. The personalities on the cards are really brought to life. David (King of Spades) really looks like King David, complete with his lyre. Alexandre (King of Clubs) is outfitted to look like an Ancient Greek hoplite. It’s a nice deck if you read with a piquet deck.

Career is a topic of inquiry, not a form of divination. A gifted worker could divine for you on the topic of career with cards of almost any type and in virtually any layout or spread -- or using any other method of divination, such as crystal scrying, sychometry, palmistry, graphology, or -- perhaps the best method for this particular topic -- astrology.
