Hello loststar67,
Scroll up a little bit and you will see that Miss cat advised using lemon grass, mint, grains of paradise and boneset for clearing away obstacles. I would stick to her advice.
Good luck.

Hello loststar67,
You could use those same herbs and dress the candle with Block Buster oil, or else purchase the Block Buster herb mix for use with that candle.

Squill is a member of the lily family so, as a magical substitution for squill, you might use any lily flower member -- but you can also simply buy squill bulbs from any supplier of ornamental flowers.
Good luck.
For those who want to know more about how to select herbs by purpose, please see my FREE one-page-wonder website, Hoodoo at a Glance, where herbs are listed by usage and you can order right on the page:

Hi, I'm a novice practitioner in Hoodoo magic and would like to know if Hibiscus is a traditional plant?

Nope, Hibiscus makes a nice reddish tea, but it is not a traditional remedy in African-American folk magic.
By the way, you posted this in the thread on International Shipping. Please do not do that again. It takes us wasted time to split the post out and move it to a different sub-forum, and then merge it into the right thread.
Please abide by forum protocol.
Thanks!

I hope I'm posting this in the right place.
I'm am planning on making my own tea-bag-bath-bombs to give to people for Christmas using empty fillable teabags. I would like to use a combination of healing, peaceful home and protection LM bath salts and add in some herbs too. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which herbs would work? I was thinking hyossop and rosemary

Hi Bruzeli,
What a great idea for gifts! I suggest checking out the Herb Magic site, and going down the list of herbs to find some that a) fit your intention, b) call out to you as "right" for this blend:
http://www.herbmagic.com/#twodollar
Lemon Grass is also a great herb for protection, which I think smells heavenly in a bath:
http://www.herbmagic.com/lemon-grass.html
Lemon Grass might work beautifully with your Rosemary, scent-wise, too!
Best of luck!

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
I've decided to go for three different types of bath-bags; for my daughter who recently moved in with her boyfriend - peaceful home and protection bath salts with rosemary, lemongrass, lavender, passionflower and motherwort; then prosperity and crown of success bath salts with pine needle, patchouli, bayberry root chip and fenugreek seeds; and lastly, healing and tranquility bath salts with goldenseal, alfalfa, coltsfoot, Chaney root and hyssop. I'm not sure the last one will smell all too great, I may just have to add more bath salts to the mixture.

Hey. I am doing a love spell and can't get any roses or lavender. I read a few places that red Chrysanthemum mean I love you. Could I use that for it? Thanks

Hi MFear,
Chrysanthemum isn't used in Hoodoo for love spells, but you can absolutely get roses and lavender here, if you need them.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
MFear,
Every culture has its own forms of symbolism.
Hoodoo is a form of folk magic associated with the African American use of roots, herbs, and in some cases flowers (especially fragrant ones, or those which were widely available in Southern gardens during the 19th century) in down-home medicine and magic.
The so-called "Language of Flowers" in which every garden flower has a symbolic meaning and therefore a bouquet can be "read" as a message is a lovely conceit developed primarily in Europe among the upper classes, especially ladies of leisure, to whom floral tributes of affection were often given.
No one will prevent you from mixing the symbolism of the Language of Flowers into the lists of medical and magical uses for botanical supplies that are found in African-American hoodoo folk magic -- but please do not confuse them or think that they are interchangeable.
"Legends of Incense, Herb, and Oil Magic" by Lewis de Claremont, first published in 1936, has been restored and re-released to the public on the 80th anniversary of its publication, as part of the Lucky Mojo Curio Co. Library of Occult Classics.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
I've been looking for a list of herbs used in just general banishing work. I'm looking mostly to banish a situation in opposed to a person. I have LM's banishing dressing oil that's going to be a part of this work, but I always utilize 3,5, or 7 herbs together as well depending on the work. I've looked in Cat's Herb and Root Magic book but the condition lists don't specify Banishing. Cunningham's books don't help there either
.
So I'm beginning to wonder if Banishing as a specific work is out of the usual realm of Hoodoo. I wouldn't think so if there is a specific Banishing formula for oils and powders.
Anyway, if anyone could provide at least 3 herbs that have banishing qualities that would be totally awesome!

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Dear Jevaud,
I have talked with hundreds of old time hoodoo practitioners and read thousands of pages of interviews with hoodoo practitioners collected from the 1870s through the 1970s, and i have never heard anyone giving a spell for "banishing a situation [as] opposed to a person." Also, as explained in some of my writings on Banishing products, that formula name and that recipe did enter hoodoo from European folklore.
If you will go to the "Hoodoo at a Glance" page and search on the word "Banishing" you will find some herbs.
Good luck.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Thank you Cat!!!! And I learned something new in the process! I guess the old timers wouldn't say 'banishing' as opposed to 'getting rid of a thing' or 'hotfooting', so I was correct in my assumption that 'banishing' work isn't hoodoo specific, and the origins more than likely are European in nature.
Sweet and thank you! I will search Hoodoo at a Glance per your direction!

Hi joe szeliga,
Welcome! If you haven't already, I highly suggest reading Miss cat's free online book, Hoodoo in Theory and Practice:
https://www.luckymojo.com/hoodoo.html
Part B, Hoodoo in Practice goes over how people use herbs and roots in various types of works, and I think will help you get a good idea of how much to use, when to use roots whole or in chips, etc.
Best of luck to you!

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
I have a question about harvesting herbs in graveyard. I live in a city which sometimes makes it difficult to find herbs and roots to work with. Across the street from where I live there is a beautiful graveyard which contains many plants and trees that could be worked with. Is it ok to harvest herbs and roots out of a graveyard? Will the fact that they are in a graveyard change the energy of these plant materials?
Thanks

Braucher,
If the plants and trees are next to a grave, I would ask the spirit who is there if you can harvest some. If the answer is yes, then you should think about leaving a payment such as 3 coins. Some people also believe in working with the caretaker spirit. This is a spirit who takes care of the graveyard and the residents. You may want to offer payment to them as well. There are precautions that come with graveyards. Like in order to avoid bringing home an unwelcome guest, you should cross a stream or river to prevent them from following you. Some people believe you should take a different way home in order to confuse the spirits. I would read up on these traditions a bit before taking items. Otherwise, it sounds like a good idea! No, I don't believe it would change the plant material in any negative way.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Hi hope everyone is well and staying safe. I have a simple question. Is there a major difference between thyme and lemon thyme, or say garden sage and white sage? Also would lemon thyme be like combining lemon and thyme? I know in times of need you have to use what you got, but is it as potent?
Thanks in advance

Evette Claudio --
Good question. Both Thyme and Sage are members of the large mint family. This family, which also includes Basil, Rosemary, and so forth, is noted for producing a wide variety of aromas, mostly as part of their interactions with insects.
In the production of these fragrances, the members of this family produce an array of chemicals that resemble the signature scents of other plants. Thus we have Lemon Thyme, Orange Thyme, Lemon Mint, Apple Mint, Pineapple Mint, Chocolate Mint, Peppermint, and more. These are not crosses between the Thyme or Mint and the other named plant, simple variant types of Thyme or Mint.
Now, as for Sage, we have a different problem -- real Sage, also called Garden Sage, is in the Mint family, as noted. But "White Sage" is also a name applied to an entirely different plant, one of the Artemisias. So you need to find out what the user, grower, or seller is referring to when naming a plant "White sage."

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
I've a question, preferably for Miss Cat because I vaguely recall a comment she made on it but other thoughts are welcomed and received with open arms!
Regarding Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs: Ii recall Ms Cat saying something to the effect of it being a valuable resource.
Initially, when I first purchased this book some years ago I'd expected to see more of a correlation between the herbs and their magical uses in Conjure - as I wasn't really interested in other systems at the time - but I was disappointed after noticing that almost none of the entries seemed to correspond to their magical uses in the Hoodoo.
As I look through it now though, with a more open mind and more curious about other systems I have come to love and value the book. I definitely agree that it's a great resource for a practitioner of any path to have but I'm wondering if it's just that: a source of reference or information on other magical systems or for the practice of other those systems/traditions rather than being particularly useful to the rootworker. Or is there some overlap or "wiggle room "?
What are your thoughts?

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Hello Dr Darensbourg,
I have moved your post to the topic on general herb and root magic, as you posted in the topic on herbs grouped specifically by purpose or use.
Scott Cunningham’s book is indeed a beneficial resource for learning about herbs and their use in spellwork. In his case, he leans toward their use in European and Euro-American spiritual traditions. This is similar to how miss cat’s Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic acknowledges the properties of herbs and roots in the hoodoo tradition. There are also many encyclopedias available on the medicinal use of herbs, as another example.
You will find that there is indeed a lot of overlap among those ways of working with herbs, as well as many distinctions to be found.
As a rootworker, I’ve used Cunningham’s book as another reference guide, as that is really the intent behind his writing. His and these other books all inform my understanding of the spiritual properties of herbs and roots and how I may apply them in my work for clients. When their use is contradicted, I personally defer to miss cat’s writing as I generally work in the hoodoo tradition. However, when I do work in the Mediterranean spiritual tradition, I rely on that system’s understanding of herbal properties. Neither one is better than the other, they are simply different.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Dr Darensbourg,
Scott Cunningham was a practitioner of Wicca and somewhat of a classicist as well. His ascriptions for the magial uses of herbs are in the European witchcraft tradition, as Miss Athena rightly noted, but that does not render them useless to a conjure worker. Some of the ascriptions do overlap and some do not, and the lists of herbs also differ. I wrote my book as an intended complement to his, not in opposition to it.
This occult classic book definitely influenced both Scott and me -- which is why i have reprinted it:
"Legends of Incense, Herb, and Oil Magic" by Lewis de Claremont, first published in 1936, has been restored and re-released to the public on the 80th anniversary of its publication, as part of the Lucky Mojo Curio Co. Library of Occult Classics.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Regarding using the cotton spell from online sources:
I too saw it and even was thinking (briefly) about paying for it to be done for me. But I had a strange feeling and decided not to.
Then I said ‘well I can do it myself!’. I did attempt it and I STILL have a strange feeling. I plan on disassembling it completely and starting a love work/sugar jar instead. Something about it just dodnt sot right with me and I cant explain it.
Thank you Miss Cat for your wisdom!
All this being said— since the petition I used in the jar has a personal concern, would I be able to use it for the new working. Or is it better to just dispose of everything?
TY all!!

Hello Vibe77,
Yes black pepper is traditionally used in break up, cursing, and crossing work specifically to drive someone away. You can read more here: http://www.herbmagic.com/pepper-black.html

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Ok so last month i gift my cousin in law a few sacs with herbs in them, along with money dressing oil and money powder which i made.
I didnt have all the ingredients that was suggested to make the oil and powder but i looked up and read about the items i needed and found suitable substitutes for them.
I picked random herbs for the sacs. no one told me to pick these certain herbs.
Plus i used candles and incense to help with the intent to make it more powerful.
Now, i do believe in what i did and my workings. Ive always felt that ive had an inner power and was never sure if it was true or not.
Now my questions:
1) Did i put the herbs for love, protection, and help manifest positive dreams for prosperity in the wrong sac bags?
2) They were in mesh colored bags. Was that wrong?
3) Is there a wrong or right sac or bags i should use for such items, or should i use glass bottles?
4) Ive made teas and herb glass bottles to help contacting spirits while i sleep, but not sure if i did it right. i dont doubt anything that i have done thus far. i just want to make sure my deliverence is correct.
If anyone can help i would really appreciate it

Hello, all.
At what point are dried herbs, animal curios or minerals too old to be effective for use in hoodoo?
Sincerely,
Rapacia

I skimmed over this topic and didn't see the reuse of roots addressed, so here goes:
I have a nice fat John the Conquerer and Queen Elizabeth Root that I placed in a mojo bag a couple of years ago but never "activated". They seem physically and energetically intact. Do y'all think they could be reused or should I just start from scratch?

Hello snouvavou,
You could try to work with them now and see what results you get. I would cleanse them first (i.e., wash in your choice of Florida Water, whiskey. etc.) and if they feel alive to you, then work them into your spell. If you don't get the results you desire, then of course start over.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Hello,
I'm new here. I'm doing some Law Keep Away work to prevent legal problems. I got a "recipe" from a trusted source that involves making a packet. I already have some Law Keep Away Oil & most of the herbs/components it calls for. The work calls for some devil's-bit (devil's bit scabious, succisa pratensis) but it doesn't specify what part of the plant. I assume you're supposed to use the root because the plant is named after a myth of the devil trying to chew the root of the plant in order to destroy the plant's healing power.
Anyway, I can't find where to buy the devil's bit root or any part of the actual plant. Only seeds are available online but I'm not sure they will have the needed potency to make it all work. I've found dried flowers that are from related species of the flower but again, I doubt that will have the same effect. The plant doesn't grow locally. I believe the devil's-bit is intended to drive away evil. Please, if anyone has suggestions where buy some devil's-bit(it's different than devil's club) I would really appreciate it.
I unfortunately don't have the time to grow a brand new plant from seeds, either. If you have a suggestion for a suitable substitute for devil's-bit I'm all ears. I'm also open to other ideas for Law Keep Away works. I'm grateful for any help.
Thank you!

Devil's Bit is not commercially available. The root is the part indicated. It is the all-time most-requested conjure herb not in commerce. This 9-page long thread mentions it many times.
People do grow it, but mostly for their own use. Folk magic often consists of articles which can be home-grown or gathered in the wild.

When Hoodoo Was Illegal: The Old Chief Medicine Co.

Tier 2 NOVEMBER 14th, 2021
Hello, everyone, and thank you for supporting "It's All Ephemera"!
This week in "Where the Southern Cross the Yellow Dog," i take a look at the United States Food and Drug Administration's successful legal action to destroy traditional American herbal knowledge that had its roots in ancient Native American medicine.
1) "When Hoodoo Was Illegal: FDA versus Indiana Botanic Garden and Old Chief Medicine Co. 1950"
[PATRONS GET THE SECRET URL IN EMAIL ONE YEAR BEFORE IT OPENS TO THE PUBLIC]
This illustrated page brings us the story of A. L. Machris and the Old Chief Medicine Co. of Detroit, Michigan, a mail-order house that purchased bulk herbal teas from Joseph E. Meyer's Indiana Botanic Gardens in Hammond, Indiana. Lucky for us, while ordering several shipments of these folkloric medicines to be destroyed, the FDA also carefully noted down all of the ingredients in six different remedies -- so now you can make your own!
Thanks to my wonderfully supportive Patrons -- you have made this web page possible.

"When Hoodoo Was Illegal" is a category of web pages at the Southern Spirits web site, which is a site that collects primary documentary accounts of the practice of hoodoo, the folk magic of African-American practitioners. Southern Spirits one of my nicest, but least-known web sites. Online since 1994, Southern Spirits brings the ghost-voices of our magical past into the modern age. These are our spiritual ancestors speaking -- both as others heard them and as they told the world about themselves. Listen!
The material at Southern Spirits was gathered from a variety of sources, including old books, magazine articles, newspapers, and even fragments extracted from novels and short stories. It is heavily annotated with interpretive and comparative notes, especially distinguishing between narratives told *by* practitioners and narratives *about* them, particularly when the latter are recounted by derogatory or "amused" white observers.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Since 1994, i have been selling herbs, roots, and minerals in packages on which i print free spells and instructions on how they are used in traditional hoodoo. For years people bought the herbs, just to collect the labels! In 2002 i published a book that included all of the label texts and more -- but folks still wanted to collect those labels. So i decided to go ahead and publish the label texts online -- and use the site where the spells are given away for free as a place where people can order the herbs as well.

This link leads you to the INDEX for the free label texts at HerbMagic.com. Each link leads to a page, and those pages link to others, and by going through the Index, one herb at a time, you can eventually navigate the entire site.

Now, people often ask, why is this made available at no charge? Because it was given to me at no charge.
As i learned early on, the payment for such teachings is patronage -- patronage at the herb shops, hoodoo drug stores, and candle shops where the information is freely shared. This Forum is also free, but, as with the old stores of my youth, there is a charge: your purchases of our hand-made goods and instructional book is the currency that supports a community-wide resource. Without your purchases from the Lucky Mojo Curio Company shop, the free web pages at "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice, "Herb Magic," "The Mystic Tea Room," "Your Wate and Fate," "The Lucky W Amulet Archive," and the Lucky Mojo Forum would all disappear.
Our community supports us -- and we give back to our community. It's as simple, and as spiritually clean, as that.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Hi,
I grow a lot of spider plants, and often they get so pot bound that their roots start growing through the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot. I snip those off so that the holes remain clear. They are healthy roots and I have a tangled bunch of them in front of me. Are there any magickal uses for spider plant roots within Hoodoo or rootwork, etc?
I can imagine since they are from a spider plant and the tangled nature of these roots that they might come in handy for entangling an enemy, or something like that - but I'm a rank beginner in rootwork and Hoodoo, so I really don't know.
Would love some good answers or ideas, or even resources.
TIA.

I did some research on this particular herb, so I already know that it might not be widely used or known in Hoodoo, but I still want to ask.
Does anyone here knows Toloache? From information I gathered from my research so far, this is both a fascinating and slightly terrifying herb.

mastersirius678,
It is a flower that grows in Mexico, used in love magic to make a person fall in love with you. It is a psychedelic and can cause serious injury. I would be very cautious if you decide to use this flower.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Hi JayDee
Yes, that is what I found online, which is why I said it is both fascinating and terrifying at the same time. Only thing I found about love magic for this flower is that it is used to make love potions, but most resources online portrayed it as a drug that causes the target to lose reasoning and becomes highly suggestible, instead of being an actual magickal herb used to cast spells like we know. Most spiritual shops do sell this in their catalogue, however.
That is where my research ends, can't find anything like testimonials or other articles supporting those claims, not even an article from a spiritual community.
