Lucky Mojo Hoodoo Rootwork Hour #04-06: Congo Magic (Miss Cat, Dr. Kioni)

Unread post by catherineyronwode » Wed Jul 21, 2004 8:51 pm

I just wanted to thank everyone who participated in this week's Hoodoo
Rootwork Hour show on Congo magic and its survival in Hoodoo. We had a
good time and a lot of information was shared.

This was the first time we opened the radio show to non-students, and
all went well, except for a "heavy breather" partway through the show.
:-)

Next week's show weill cover the topic of crossroads work -- so please
prepare by reading the HITAP page
http://www.luckymojo.com/crossraods.html
and have your questions ready. We will once again present the show in
two halves -- a half-hour talk, and then a half hour of questions and
comments from students.

Thanks,

It really was a great hour, and thank you all for it.

I have one question: What is this about drilling a hole in a tree,
inserting a wish or request, and hammering it in the tree 9 times? I know I don't have all this down correctly, so could someone explain just what this ritual is and what it is used for?

Someone mentioned that a ailment that could not be
diagnosed or treatly properly was ended by doing this tree action.

Can anyone clarifiy this for me?

Thanks so much.

(This spell can be used for good or for evil. It basically "fixes" something in place. See HHRM page 150 -- "To Stop Up a Woman's Blood" -- for an example of harming someone this way. The other story i related on the show, about curing a disease that the medical doctor could not diagnose or fix, involved using the same spell for good -- the woman took one of her own hairs, wrapped it around an iron nail, carried it to a sweet gum tree and drove it in with nine blows, calling for the disease to be removed with each hammer blow. --cat)

Hiya !!!

I always have a great time listening to the show, I
love the mute option. i diddn't realize how cool it
was till Kioni mentioned it...my house is usually loud
due to lots of people and a busy road.

I did hear "the Breather" early on and I almost said
somthing but I'm glad I diddn't have to (Kioni saved
the day.) i like to give the breather the benifit of
doubt and believe someone was just holding thier
reciever under their nose or somthing. I think
everyone should HAVE to mute when you sign on except
the key speakers and the host/ess or unless you're
adressed personally. it's easy to jump from muted to
un-muted.

I tend to ramble and I think i always sound funny
when I try and talk. When i open my mouth it's like
the Gods of Mischief and Chaos take over and turn it
nto somthing totally weird and not quite were I was
going.

I think I should change my daily perfume to King
Solomons wisdom oil and Sage for my bath (or somtihng)
See ya (Hear ya) all next time!!!

Cat, perhaps they just were really excited about the subject matter. };^)

Greetings,

Thanks for another fascinating and edifying show!

Cat - would you mind listing the recommended books and academic references, for those
of use who want to follow up with some reading?

Best regards,
CeeCee

(On the subject of Central African spell-casting, i read aloud some extracts from "Magic, Witchcraft, and Curing; American Museum Sourcebooks in Anthropology" edited by John Middleton (The Natural History Press, 1967) Perhaps Eoghan will give us his own bibiography of books about the Congo. --cat)
