I think the red and white carnation prohibition /might/ be because Greek Grandma was Greek Orthodox, and I found an article talking about using white (and later adding red) carnations to mourn Jesus and symbolize Christ's sacrifice. That is speculation on my side. I also found that in ancient greece (maybe too ancient unless this is a way with REAL staying power) red and white flowers together was a symbol of death (though not specifically carnations). Today White carnations are common Greek Orthodox funeral flowers. No slam dunk, but a lot of stuff 'around' carnations, red white, and mourning. So maybe that's why the prohibition? Anyway.
