Mystics, Mages, and Magical Places 06/26/2023:
The seventeenth episode of Mystics, Mages, and Magical Places with Reverend Art, Reverend James and special guest Jaydee, bringing you "The Doctrine of Signatures"

Mystics, Mages, and Magical Places will be on the air at 4pm PT, 7pm ET with Reverend Art, Reverend James and special guest JayDee! We begin this show with an update from our guest followed by a discussion on the Doctrine of Signatures in magical work.

So, what IS the Doctrine of Signatures?

From a scientific perspective the doctrine of signatures, which has been dated back to the first century CE although the title was first coined during the Renaissance, tells us that herbs resembling various parts of the body can be used by to treat ailments of those body parts. Ancient physicians used the Doctrine of Signatures to treat their patients. For instance, the flowers of eyebright were said to resemble eyes, and therefore to be useful for ailments of the eyes. The leaves of lungwort, which bears the modern botanical name Pulmonaria (referencing the pulmonary system) resemble lungs and were believed to treat diseases of the lungs. In magic, the use of herbs, roots and other naturally occuring materia have been widely attributed to their usefulness due to the shape, texture, and aromas they produce.

Join us as JayDee of hoodoohousedetroit.com discusses with us the development and application of the Doctrine of Signatures!

2023-06-26 19:17 reverendjames https://www.luckymojo.com/hoodooherbmagic.html
2023-06-26 19:17 phyllismargretgabor I'm thinking of getting that. I don't do animals so I'd like to see how I could adapt the recipes
2023-06-26 19:17 jaydeehoodoo https://www.luckymojo.com/hoodooherbmagic.html
2023-06-26 19:22 dr-sweets So Hoodoo blends European, Native American and African practices (plus many others in some cases). The "D of S" was primarily defined with European plant material...Yes or No?
2023-06-26 19:23 rev_art The Doctrine, as it's called now, primarily got it's launch=pad impetus during the Renaissance period in Europe under the "materia medica" books of the time
2023-06-26 19:26 reverendjames I think the Term came from European origins but the belief is in many cultures and they may have their own terminology for it.
2023-06-26 19:26 dr-sweets Yes so sometimes a hoodoo use of a root/herb doesn't match with the European or Native American use, but we just go with it.
2023-06-26 19:28 jaydeehoodoo Hoodoo is a blend of African, Native European, Asian, Latin, Jewish magic that developed in the United States. Some items are euro-centric others are not, some are American-centric in that they grow here and not in other regions.

2023-06-26 19:32 phyllismargretgabor you're making me hungry

2023-06-26 19:41 reverendjames https://www.luckymojo.com/thisamazingbook.html
2023-06-26 19:41 phyllismargretgabor I have a plant identifier app on my phone and I use it all the time when I'm out on walks. it's crazy what you can just find growing around you
2023-06-26 19:41 phyllismargretgabor balance
2023-06-26 19:42 jaydeehoodoo https://www.luckymojo.com/thisamazingbook.html
2023-06-26 19:42 phyllismargretgabor haha I wouldn't mind 3 copies
2023-06-26 19:43 rev_art I've used "Picture it" I think on my phone? Or "Picture This?" Rev James might remember, I'm lucky I can remember how to unlock my phone sometimes, lol
2023-06-26 19:43 dr-sweets So the knees and Capricorn are paired so how do you remediate problems with knees?
2023-06-26 19:46 dr-sweets I was told lavender EO (no carrier oil its safe) will help with inflammation at the knees.
2023-06-26 19:47 phyllismargretgabor what problem?
2023-06-26 19:47 phyllismargretgabor that's what I was getting at. if it's pain. peppermint
2023-06-26 19:47 phyllismargretgabor is it Capricorn?
2023-06-26 19:47 reverendjames @dr-sweets I absolutely do NOT recommend undiluted essential oil of any kind for the 'average' user. This can cause sensitization at any point where you’re using it, and is perpetuated by MLM companies to sell more oil.
2023-06-26 19:48 dr-sweets That's true. I have never recommended it to anyone.
2023-06-26 19:48 reverendjames all essential oils can actually cause more harm if used undiluted - again the difference between a medicine and a poison is the dosage - in this case, the dilution. Consult a certified aromatherapist.
2023-06-26 19:49 jaydeehoodoo I personally suggest using condition oils like Lucky Mojo sells, Healing oil, mixed with Capricorn oil, and Strength oil, this can be a good blend to dress the legs, burn on figural candles focusing on the legs
2023-06-26 19:49 dr-sweets That’s a good idea from a rootworker position.
2023-06-26 19:51 dr-sweets That's a better option for me to recommend since I'm not a doctor.
2023-06-26 19:52 rev_art Yes! Personally, although I've been known to use EO's, usually I apply them to a dollbaby or a candle, rather than the person.
2023-06-26 19:52 rev_art Sympathetic magic!
2023-06-26 19:53 phyllismargretgabor i use straight peppermint EO but I am a mad woman. I get terrible tension headaches and it truly helps
2023-06-26 19:54 reverendjames Deer's Tongue - AKA Vanilla Leaf, smells faintly of vanilla - "to make your speech sweet"
2023-06-26 19:54 dr-sweets I heard folks do the same with Peppermint EO. I never tried it.
2023-06-26 19:54 phyllismargretgabor everyone else gets a carrier. isn't lavender bad for pets too?
2023-06-26 19:55 rev_art For anyone who uses EO's, here's a great book to have on hand: https://www.amazon.com/Essential-Oil-Sa ... 0443062412
2023-06-26 19:55 wickwayisup I cannot burn incense around my dog.
2023-06-26 19:56 dr-sweets Cattail that explodes is good to arouse a woman to like sex.... LOL
2023-06-26 19:56 rev_art That's a good, old one @dr-sweets lol
2023-06-26 19:57 dr-sweets That water stinks after a few days........
2023-06-26 19:57 rev_art From the Rose of Jericho?
2023-06-26 19:57 dr-sweets Yes
2023-06-26 19:58 jaydeehoodoo It needs to be changed and dried several days
2023-06-26 19:59 dr-sweets In all of the shops it’s submerged in a large glass bowl near the cash register.
2023-06-26 19:59 dr-sweets Folks drop coins into them....
2023-06-26 20:00 rev_art Yeah, that's a little overkill
2023-06-26 20:03 dr-sweets Why is lavender popular with attracting gay men or is it Herman (Harry?) Slater that made it popular?
2023-06-26 20:04 phyllismargretgabor mine do too! haha
2023-06-26 20:04 phyllismargretgabor they know the jar it's in!
2023-06-26 20:04 reverendjames RIGHT
2023-06-26 20:04 phyllismargretgabor it grows all through my yard too
2023-06-26 20:04 phyllismargretgabor i spoil them lol
2023-06-26 20:06 phyllismargretgabor money plant!
2023-06-26 20:06 phyllismargretgabor the little disks look just like coins
2023-06-26 20:07 reverendjames @dr-sweets Lavender has been used to describe homosexual things often - the "lavender scare" The greek poet Saphos also wrote poetry related to Violets and lesbians (violets/purple/lavender) among other things.
2023-06-26 20:07 phyllismargretgabor i don't know the real name of the money plant 🙁 that's just what we call it
2023-06-26 20:09 jaydeehoodoo https://www.luckymojo.com/lavenderlove.html
2023-06-26 20:09 reverendjames @phyllismargretgabor The plant is Lunaria Biennis - Money plant or Silver Dollar Plant, unless your talking about the "money plant" that is a succulent that has the same name.
2023-06-26 20:10 jaydeehoodoo Lavender HHRM pg. 120 gives use for opposite sex as well.
2023-06-26 20:10 dr-sweets Great. I know it works. I have a few gay male clients.
2023-06-26 20:10 phyllismargretgabor nope that's the one. silver dollar.
2023-06-26 20:10 phyllismargretgabor i always loved them as a child
2023-06-26 20:11 phyllismargretgabor they way it looks like tissue paper
2023-06-26 20:11 reverendjames Me too! My family got me to plant a coin and then planted these on top :)
2023-06-26 20:12 phyllismargretgabor I should do that for my child!! 🥹 that's a great idea
2023-06-26 20:12 dr-sweets High John comes from what plant...I don’t have my books in from of me.
2023-06-26 20:12 reverendjames Ipomea Jalapa
2023-06-26 20:12 reverendjames I love botanical names :)
2023-06-26 20:13 jaydeehoodoo HHRM pg. 111
2023-06-26 20:13 dr-sweets LOL...that’s it.
2023-06-26 20:13 jaydeehoodoo it is indigenous to the United States
2023-06-26 20:14 phyllismargretgabor high john?
2023-06-26 20:14 jaydeehoodoo Adam and Eve root
2023-06-26 20:15 phyllismargretgabor ah ok. that makes more sense
2023-06-26 20:16 reverendjames Be aware - the root takes a LONG time to grow (high John), it is not a plant and harvest in a season, it's a commitment. So thank you to those who spend years caring for these plants to sell roots to us practitioners!
2023-06-26 20:18 phyllismargretgabor i am starting some Solomon seal. or trying too knowing that it's the same way.
2023-06-26 20:24 phyllismargretgabor the cure for poison ivy grows beside it
2023-06-26 20:24 reverendjames Exactly!
2023-06-26 20:25 reverendjames The cure and the poison always grow close by, that was the essence of the saying.
2023-06-26 20:25 jaydeehoodoo Pow Wow https://www.luckymojo.com/powwows.html
2023-06-26 20:25 dr-sweets I like the "Shame Faced" plant (Mimosa pudica?) that will close its leaves and droop. That’s a direct D. of S. plant for magic.
2023-06-26 20:25 reverendjames Oh, the one when you touch it, it closes. <3 those.
2023-06-26 20:25 dr-sweets yes...lol
