Hello there

Unread post by pseudomephisto » Thu Dec 11, 2025 7:30 am

Greetings everyone.

My name is Ed. To make a very long story short, I come from a mixed background. My mother being African American and my father coming from the Caribbean. Since I was raised by my mother, there has of course been a long cultural and spiritual influence that over the years I've realized comes from practices and beliefs that have been passed down over the generations.

My mother has always wanted me and my siblings to find our own spiritual path in life and because of this from a young age I began to study every religious text that I could get my hands on, began visiting every church, Temple, mosque, synagogue ... Everything that was within my grasp, I tried to absorb and comprehend.

Even with all of the information and practices that I've gathered over the years, I've always felt a strong call to learn and continue the practices that have been passed down on my mother's side of the family with a hope to recover information, practices, insights, and lessons that I can in turn pass along to my children.

Because a large part of my mother's family has either passed away or does not seem to have an interest in such traditions. I have decided to turn to this community for help and guidance.

I look forward to being part of this wonderful community and continuing on my journey alongside everyone.

In 2026 I have the go of really starting to ramp up my practice and hopefully begin the correspondence course as well.

Thank you all in advance for everything.

Ed

Hello, pseudomephisto / Ed --

Thanks for seeking us out and joining our little corner of the world. I think you will find a lot of contemporary help here as well as links to many historical documents that provide insights into African-American practitioners of the 19th nd 20th centuries.

One place you may wish to start looking for traces of your mother's family's cultural heritage and spiritual practices is at my folklore archive site, Southern Spirits. Here is a link:

THE SOUTHERN SPIRITS COLLECTION OF TEXTS ON AFRICAN-AMERICAN MAGIC AND SPIRITUALITY

Another place to get a feel for how deeply embedded hoodoo has been in Black culture is to listen to song lyrics that mentions hoodoo and fortune telling practices. I have a large -- and still growing -- collection of these, many with mp3 audio files and biographical information -- at my Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo site. Here's the links

Here's a podcast i did a while back explaining the contents and mission of the "Blues Lyrics and Hoodoo" audio archive:
