Re: Deities, Angels, Spirits, Saints: Questions and Answers
Im new to Catholicism and even Hoodoo, but not to magick. I love magick but I never wanted to leave my Christian background to do so. Now that I am back I was use to having a pantheon of deities to depend on, so I decided to become Catholic because of the Saints and I love it! But I have a question, do you have to make a personal connection to saint to do a spell? For instance if I was gonna work with Saint Michael for protection would I have to befriend him first? What if I needed help instantly and I didn't have time? I know its okay to befriend a saint, especially your patron, but is all right if I need help with something I can just call him or her up to do so? I would think God would be okay with that because all saints do is intercessed for you. But I could be wrong and please tell if I am.
Thank You & God Bless!
Thank You & God Bless!

Hello, MojoBoi37 ,
Welcome to the forum
If you get a chance (and wish to do so), please introduce yourself on the introduction thread.
I am Catholic. This is what I say about this:
If I met you every day or even once every other day and gave you a candy bar just to be nice, what would you do if I later asked you to lend me $10.00 ? Would you give it to me? You probably would.
If you never met me and I stopped you and asked you for $10.00, would you give it to me? Probably not!
So, what I do is I light a vigil candle to the Saint and introduce myself. Then, I tell them to enjoy the candle. I may even offer a fresh glass of water everyday and sometimes a few white fresh flowers
When the candle is over, I wait awhile. Then, I do a Novena or a petition or whatever to them. That way, they are more apt to help me.
This is how I do it
Wishing you the very best

Re: Deities, Angels, Spirits, Saints: Questions and Answers
Blessings. I need help. I am starting to feel like the universe is against me. I have been dating a man for 2 years, we broke up in August and started back seeing each other in October. I have tried candle work, binding us together, feeding him my menstrual blood, a honey jar to sweeten him to me, a vinegar jar against other women and nothing has worked. His mother is oshun and his father is obatala. I have tried incoming Obatala for help. I've gone to Yemaya at the ocean to turn things around. What else can I do? I love this man and want to spend the rest of my life with him. We had something amazing before the break up and now he tells me that he isn't where I am, he's not fine. I don't know how to fix it and my heart can't let it go. I've tried come to me oil. I sought the help of spirits. What can I do to bind us and if there isn't anything I can do to him, what can I do to heal myself?

Hi Nikip1004,
Welcome to the forum. When you get a chance, and assuming you wish to do so, please introduce yourself in the Introductions thread.
I have moved your post to the thread involving spirits beyond hoodoo as you reference them in your post. This is a hoodoo forum and we do not work with orishas, but there may be advice for you in this thread.
Good luck.

Re: Deities, Angels, Spirits, Saints: Questions and Answers
One of my stronger sides is dreams, Ive always had visions and visitations through them.
I had a dream about 6 months ago about Orunmila.
Please keep in mind that before I had the dream, I never even knew who he is.
He came to my dream and I felt very peaceful and awe inspired, we talked. He told me his name stood for wisdom and said that him and his family came from the stars, he pointed to the sky and lit up different variations of constellations, stars, and planets. He had blue hue to his aurora
That's all I can really remember.
Ever since, Ive been getting even more spiritually involved in these things. (Theurgy, God Spells) and just all around wanting a closer understand of the realm of the Creator. Ive also found myself much more humanitarian feeling.
Does anyone know anymore on Orunmila, petitioning him, and just connecting?
I feel like he invoked something (good) and I would really like him to visit me again so I could ask him to work with me.
I find it more then coincidence that I'm an Aquarius. I've been seeing common numerical signs of 311, 3;s and 1's quite often sense than also.
And fear of sounding conceited, I've always and still to this day have had a feeling Im supposed to do something big or greater then the "normal"
Thanks in advance

Hello, Endwatcher --
In my opinion, one does not just wake up from a dream and say, "I'm gonna venerate African tribal deities" without having a deep appreciation for Afro-Caribbean religions and a firm committment to practicing animal sacrifice as a part of one's religion.
Please, read these links for more information:
AIRR: Category:Working Within the African and African Diasporic Tradition http://readersandrootworkers.org/wiki/C ... _Tradition
AIRR: Category:Orishas

AIRR: Orunmila
http://readersandrootworkers.org/wiki/Orunmila
AIRR: Animal Sacrifice

None of this relates in any meaningful wasy to African American folk magic or domestic magical practices of any kind, so it is off topic here, but we are peased to help you on your journey.
Good luck.

Re: Deities, Angels, Spirits, Saints: Questions and Answers
Yes, you are right....It is a bit off topic. I apologize.
What would you think it was than?
I read those articles, they were some of the ones I studied to find out about Orunmila.
Before, I had no knowledge of him or Orishas as everything I learned before that had been essentially Christian Mysticism, Hermeticism, Taoism.
I guess Im slightly lost on this subject as it was very random and out of my knowledge and belief system, and I too thought and think its odd that he would choose my dream to come too, but it was profound enough and
most certainly far from my knowledge and sub conscious thought to believe that it was something else other than him.

Hello Endwatcher,
I would recommend trying to connect with a reputable person who is a member of one of the African Diasporic religions and be prepared to spend a lot of time and effort learning about these things. Their are workers on AIRR (www.readersandrootworkers.org) who do practice these traditions. I suggest starting there!
Peace~

So I know she's a goddess of love and sexuality in the Norse culture but what elements, colors, etc would be associated with her?

Hi PrincessKLS,
Since she is affiliated with love and fertility, Red would be a good color for her and I would petition her on Fridays.
Good luck.

Re: Deities, Angels, Spirits, Saints: Questions and Answers
How does one Communicate with these spirits? I don't want to be Vague when it comes to this question because I think of communication by:
-Talking verbally with a spirit or
-Having spirits in your ears saying words or phrases
I never thought of them giving you clues through any other way.
I am about to begin a Altar in my room to have Guardian Angels, Saints, and Ancestors come to me and help me with Rootwork. I have everything prepared.
But I just want to know is it even possible to hold a conversation with a spirit? I'm gullible and ignorant to the fact if people shoot me hints or riddles?

Re: Deities, Angels, Spirits, Saints: Questions and Answers
Dear JanPetro,
I suggest that you find a Forum -- or better yet a teacher -- familiar with and able to answer your questions about Haitian Voodoo.
Dear Jaime Banks,
How one communicates with Deities, Angels, Spirits, and Saints will vary according to one's religious customs.
There is another thread for communication with Ancestors, and you may ask the same question there, but THIS thread is about communication with discarnate spirits who either never incarnated or whom you have never met physically and who are not related to you by DNA or family -- in shorts, gods, goddesses, archangels, angels, nature spirits, animal spirits, and holy ones who have been canonized or otherwise honoured by a religious group of some kind.
So, having made that clear, i would have to tell you that we cannot teach you any religious path. We do not know if you are a Muslim, a Jain, a Christian, a Jew, a Taoist, a Hindu, a Buddhist, or a Wiccan. The gods and goddesses of those religions all have customary methods of communication with human beings. Ask your elders in your tradition.
However, since you mentioned the Guardian Angel, i can perhaps assume that you are working in a Jewish, Spiritualist, or Christian religious framework. The Guardian Angel is not known for being hyper-verbal, but often shows the way through deeds and actions. One approaches this angel with prayers, asking for assistance and signs that helping hands have been extended. One may speak aloud or pray sub-vocally. This angel may speak, but is more often perceived as a way-shower and helping guide. This picture shows you the experience that many have with the Guardian Angel -- it shows two little children, completely unconscious of the dangers of the broken bridge that they are traversing, being guided and guarded on their journey by their loving, silent Guardian Angel.

Guardian Angel Glass-Encased Candle, Fixed

When it comes to Saints, again, each one has his or her own traditions. Be aware that the word "SAINTS" has entirely different meanings in the various lineages, traditions, and denominations of Christianity! PLEASE read this web page i have written as part of "Hoodoo in Theory and Practice" about the meaning of the word "SAINTS" in Christianity!

Re: Deities, Angels, Spirits, Saints: Questions and Answers
Hello LM,
I'm currently hoping to learn more about the practice of "punishing" or "scolding" a St. who has become "lazy" or complacent in their work with you. Meaning you have been consistent with your offerings, prayers, devotions, etc. and for a reason that you can't seem to discern - they no longer pull through for you. Another online resource uses the guide below as a suggestion, but I am hoping to gain insight from LM. If this is the wrong thread and there is another conversation going elsewhere, please feel free to direct me. I did what I considered to be a thorough search for the topic/material and only go piecemeal comments on it.
1. Rebukement. Reprimand the spirit in the name of a higher power, usually Jesus, but if you are working outside a Christian context this may not be workable for you. The idea here to verbally shame the spirit by explaining how you have faithfully prayed to him or and consistently made their offering only to have the spirit ignore your request.
2. Reversal. Turn the spirits image away from you if it is a statue, or upside down if it is a picture. This is an act that is believed to make the spirit uncomfortable and ashamed. When the spirit begins working for you again, set the image back correctly. For an example of this type of punishment we need only to look to Saint Anthony. Saint Anthony is often prayed to in order to find lost objects, however, in Latin countries he is often prayed to by those seeking a husband or wife. When Saint Anthony does not work for the petitioner, he or she will often turn the statue upside down or in some cases take the baby away from him in the belief that he will work faster for the petitioner.
3. Withhold Offerings. Spirits draw strength from the offerings we make to them. When they don't receive their offerings they grow weak and will be more inclined to work with you.

Re: Deities, Angels, Spirits, Saints: Questions and Answers
Hello,
So I don't know if this would be the right place, however here goes. I like to buy holy statues not Christian but Buddhas, Greek Gods, ect. I find when i buy Hindu statue, Ganesh for example, who is supposed to be lucky, and road opener, I tend to have really bad luck till the status is out of my house. I believed it was just Ganesh till i bough Hanuman. It was calling to me on Amazon, it arrived and I was so happy. I washed it in ammonia to clean anger from chinese worker who made it, put it high up in my "protection" closet, and suddenly I am sick, I have cold that will not go away, my tax refund is missing, my mail is being lost, you get the point. I have covered the statue with uncrossing powder to stop the run of bad luck. Hanuman is a border God, who stop evil from entering a space. I had no intention of turning Hindu, I just liked the figure. Is it me or is the Hindu Pantheon against me?

Re: Deities, Angels, Spirits, Saints: Questions and Answers
Hello Jenny Shan,
I personally have not done a lot of work with Saints and so only have limited experiences with them. I have never worked with them in the way you are describing but I have heard of turning pictures upside down to make them uncomfortable. For me saints are very specific entities who are present and able to do things on peoples behalf who have a relationship with them. I feel that for people who are raised within a tradition that includes saints, they will have an easier time approaching them and asking for things as those saints have been introduced to since that person was a small child. In that case perhaps this kind of shaming would be something that could work. For instance I have a good friend whom I have known for the better part of 20 years. I can occasionally give him a hard time if I think he is being silly or making poor decisions. I would not however do that with someone I have only known for a small amount of time or just met the other day.I believe a similar approach would be appropriate when working with these saints as well. If you have not been working with them for a fairly long time you may not know them well enough to take that approach, the Saint, a specific being with his or her own personalities and ideas about things, may take the stance that you do not know them well enough to treat them that way. They may in turn not grant your request or even retaliate in unpleasant ways. If on the other hand say a person is born into a catholic family and has had their own patron saint given to them as a child and they have had a relationship with that saint for most all of their life, that person would likely be able to take this approach due to the long standing relationship that already exists. In the end with this type of thing I believe it just comes down to what kind of relationship a person has with the being they are working with.
Peace~

Re: Deities, Angels, Spirits, Saints: Questions and Answers
Hello ChristopherNoSaint,
Ultimatly I do not think we can give you a definite answer as to whether or not a whole pantheon would be upset with you or out to get you. For a very clear answer to that I would suggest seeking guidance from a spiritual professional who works within a Hindu tradition. There are members of AIRR who do so and you can look for them at this site (www.readersandrootworkers.org).
What you are describing does sound like it is possible that you are somehow over stepping some boundary with these deities. Perhaps the way your were placing the statue or some other manner of handling the particular being was in some way taboo or offensive to him/her. Find someone who works with those beings and knows how to approach them in order to learn the best way of working with these beings.
Peace~

Re: Deities, Angels, Spirits, Saints: Questions and Answers
Hello, Jenny Shan ,
I am of a different faith than is Natstein. So, I would like to add my two cents to the conversation. It doesn't mean that he's right or I'm right, it's just a different perspective
I do know that taking the baby away from St Anthony will prompt him to grant your wish.
But punishing a Saint? As a Catholic, here' my perspective:
A Saint is very powerful ( a heck of a lot more powerful than any of us. We are mere mortals). A Saint needs to be respected. It could be that the Saints that you have worked with don't sense this from you.
Reprimanding a Saint in the name is Jesus? I believe, is, well, pretty pretentious. I personally would never do this. I am not Jesus and have no right to speak for him. But, that's me. However, as you had stated, this is not a good practice for Christians.
I have heard of workers who do place statues upside down. That is more common.
Withholding offerings? We usually don't give offerings until our petition is granted (usually, not al the time). And the offering is the promise we make if the petition is granted. So, this is THE most common practice.
Anyway, my perspective....
Take care

To follow up after reading way to much about Hindu idols, and Hindu Vastu Shastra (Hindi Feng Shui), I decided that keeping Hindu Idols was more work then I was willing to put in. There happens to Hindu Temple 20 minutes away, I dropped them off in the middle of the night with note says free to good household. On checking the temples website today it happens to the festival of that particular god today. Odd how the universe works...

Hey all,
Im not sure if this is the right place to ask, sorry if it isn't.
I just wanted to know which day to ask for help from St. Cecilia. I know St. Expedite has a day, but I don't know about other Saints. Thank you!

Hello, AJxoxo,
I am so sorry but I can't find it. I have looked everywhere (including the Catholic sites)
Her feast day is Nov 22. The patron Saint of Music.
Unfortunately, you'll have to google this yourself (although I did).
When I don't know a day, I utilize Sunday
Wishing you the best

I am still learning about Intranquility and Saint Muerte and their differences. I know that for Intranquility won't be the best solution if there is already contact with an ex. But what about Saint Muerte? If there is contact with an ex-can a person still work with her?
I have looked throughout the forum but couldn't find my answer

Re: Deities, Angels, Spirits, Saints: Questions and Answers
Hello,
I can barely get myself to perform spells against a certain person, such is its protection. Feels like such a great effort, like there's actual weight thrown against me. Like I am pushing an elephant with my bare hands. And divination has pointed out that it is due to protective spirits blocking my every effort.
So. I was reading up on spirit traps.
1) Can those be used as a manner of getting rid of/weakening a spirit that has been protecting someone who I am aiming my spells at?
2) And if yes, how does one get the spirit inside the trap, working from a distance? Prayers? Arbitrary invitation?
3) If the spirit trap is not fitting for such usage - an believe me, trying to reason with and sweetening the spirit was to no avail - how should I proceed?

Hello asturias,
Have you tried scrolling up through this thread and reading through the other posts? There is a lot of good information to start with.
Also, in the Black Folder, there is a flier about spirit traps:

Hope this helps!

Yes, I have looked into the previous posts of this thread, under Miss Aida's recommendation. Thank you, Sister Jean. And I'll get the black folder along with the other required purchases to apply to Miss Cat's course, I surely wouldn't avoid it.
4) But overall...can spirit traps be used in the described manner?
5) If yes, how does one accomplish getting a spirit into it?
6) If no, how could the situation be handled instead?
Anyhow. Thank you.

Asturias:
1) A trap traps the spirit. It does not weaken it. You can then dispose of the spirit. Think of it as being alike a live-trap for an animal. The trap containing the spirit is generally disposed of by sequestration or distance-removal.
2) One lures it in. Prayers are not usually the method used. An offering followed by some form of physical closure is a technique found in many cultural traditions of folk magic. I do not know what you mean by "arbitrary invitation," so i cannot reply to that.
3) Try a spirit trap. The book cited will be of help.
4) Yes.
5) One lures it in. See (2) above.
6) But the answer is Yes.
Note that THIS thread is about SUMMONING (calling up) and WORKING WITH (forming an alliance with) a spirit. It is not about trapping or disposing of a spirit. Please stay on topic. What you are looking for may be better found in one of the two following threads:

Ok. Thank you, Miss Cat.
Please forgive the wrong placement of ideas there, when I insinuated "weakening" instead of restraining, and for the misusage of terms with the "arbitrary invitation", which led to some uncertainty. I meant a plain invitation to the spirit to enter the trap.
And also, I am sorry about being in the wrong trend. This is a mistake I usually wouldn't make. I arrived here by suggestion of the moderation, when I had shown interest in spirit traps on a different trend, and asked for further source of reading material.
Anyhow. I understand. I'll look into it and purchase the book. Thank you again, Miss Cat.

Hello
I have a question, hopefully nobody finds it bizzare:) I recently had a miscarriage at 2 months. As the mother to it, I felt and still feel very connected to it. Has anyone ever thought of or called upon and worked with the spirit of their unborn child they have lost? What are your thoughts on this? Thank you everyone for your input:) Blessed be.

Hello Hqs530,
I don't think that's bizarre at all, I completely understand where you're coming from. And I'm very sorry for your loss. I don't have personal experience with miscarriage, but I bet you could create a simple altar upon which you light a white candle dressed with Blessing oil and pray for your little one. You could also call upon the Virgin Mary to protect the spirit of the child and to bless you as you heal and recover.

Re: Deities, Angels, Spirits, Saints: Questions and Answers
Hello, all!
While I have worked with St. Jude in the past, the work has been quite informal, with only the occasional prayer offered, followed by my request for assistance. What I desire now, however, is a far deeper relationship with him, one in which regular offerings and prayer is given, as I build a much deeper bond with him than what I have now.
I wish to begin a deep working relationship with St. Jude, and to see if in fact, the desire to begin such a relationship is reciprocated by him.
I'm wondering if there is a traditional way within hoodoo of approaching a saint in ritual, and making my wishes known to them.
I wasn't sure how best to approach this, or if there is even a traditional way in which to make such intentions known. It occurred to me that it might simply be a matter of setting up an altar, and starting in with regular offerings.
However, intuitively it felt as though an initial ritual, to formally make my wishes for a deeper relationship known to him, and, most importantly, learn if he, in turn, wishes to form a deeper connection with me, would be both the most respectful, and the most effective. *Smiles*
Afterall, if I start attempting to create such a bond with a spirit, without taking that spirit's desires into account, it seems fairly disrespectful, and my magick would not be nearly as effective as it would Be were I to enter such a relationship with a saint that's far more interested in me!
Thanks so much for any assistance folks can give me!

Re: Deities, Angels, Spirits, Saints: Questions and Answers
Hoodoo is not notably a Catholic form of folk magic. That is, while African American Catholic root workers certainly do exist and have been teaching students and being interviewed by folklorists for decades, the practice of Catholic folk magic is found equally among Hispanic, European, and Pacific Island people. I suggest that the most you will learn from studying hoodoo with respect to Saint Jude is the same type of information that you would find in any Catholic forum --"he is the patron of lost causes," "his colour is green," and "his Feast Day is October 28th."
What you are proposing seems to be a special mystical connection to this saint which is neither a casual Catholic veneration, nor Catholic folk magic, nor African American hoodoo. I suggest that you ask other Catholic mystics how they might accomplish what you seek to do.

Re: Deities, Angels, Spirits, Saints: Questions and Answers
Hello! First time poster, looking for information and some guidance.
So in the past several weeks/past month, I have been feeling the "spirit" of Autumn/Fall a little more intensely than I ever have before. I'm literally smelling, tasting, and feeling the Autumn sensations more vibrantly and deliberately. Specifically, it is Dia De Los Muertos that keeps coming to the forefront of my mind. I'm receiving a lot of imagery of that particular day and it's kind of exciting me in a new way.
Being Mexican, it's always been a part of my background and i've heard/learned the basic history behind it but my house hold in particular doesn't celebrate/venerate the holiday. Never got much in the way of hands on experience. Let alone any kind of ancestral honoring/work.
So far I've been receiving a lot of "signs" having to do with candles, Saints, dance, celebration, Mexican folk art, skulls, flowers, and mainly La Catrina. I've been told/read up on the social/cultural significance of El Catrin and La Catrina. It seems be more of a social commentary on the aristocracy of the Mexican culture during the time of its conception, something of a "culturally-commercial" folk character, with all due respect! And I can understand that part, but really, my question is: does it/can it go beyond that? Is there precedence in working with La Catrina in a spiritual sense?
Normally, I would interpret all this spiritual signage as a possible calling from La Santisima Muerte, and with all due love and respect, I don't get that it is Her in particular. La Catrina seems to be making herself known as her own aspect and/or entity. Is this possible? Anyone else have any information or guidance as far as any of this is concerned? Should I be considering this as a call to do ancestral work?
Hmmm.... Thank you for your time and patience!

Sorry, both La Santisima Muerte and La Catrina are features of Mexican folklore. This forum is for the discussion of African American (Black American) roots magic.
There are some people here who may be able to help you, but i would suggest that you ask your questions at a Spanish-language Mexican culture forum.

Re: Deities, Angels, Spirits, Saints: Questions and Answers
Hello to all!!
I'd like to know what spirit can I possibly call on to bring my kid's father back to me and send his current girlfriend away from him forever.
I broke them up before with black figure candles and at that time I called upon my ancestors to assist and the job was done. But I want to work with spirits this time.
I thought about the Intranquil Spirit. But we have kids together.
I want a spirit that isn't hard to work with.
1) Which spirit can I use to assist me?
2) How would I possibly call on it and what do I say?
3) Do I use products that are specifically for that spirit or can I use other products and just call on the spirit?

Hi!
I have non human and human spirits that sometimes come to me (I feel them, but is unable to decode the message). I often go to a medium who translates, however I want to be able to communicate with them on my own. What products can I use for this? I dont care to ask them for anything right now just want to chat with them and be able to decode their responses.
Thank you for your help!

who is a good saint and/angel to work with to break up a couple so that they dont get back together again & i dnt want the ex returned to me (the couple isnt married, there are no kids involved) ... also, who wld be good to call upon to cause a cheater from being able to have sex, get hard, nature destroyed, etc.? has anyone experienced in ramifications with working with st. expedite? i have read somewhere that some1 in your family will die/he will take away some1 in your family if you dont make his name known!
thank you God, archangel michael, st. raymond, st. joseph & ancestors for all of your help.

Hello, passionfruit_sky ,
No St Expedite is not the Saint for that type of work.
and, no, that isn't true about the death.
Is this work justified? You would have to give a good reason for all of this.
Take care

Re: Deities, Angels, Spirits, Saints: Questions and Answers
How does one service a spirit?
More specifically how do you contact a spirit to make a "pact" with it?
Also, are there any spirits/deities/demons who cater to homosexuality?

Hello, MalikArcano,
I would highly recommend the book: "Communing With the Spirits". Find it here:
www.luckymojo.com/mojocatbooks.html
This book ought to help you.
I can't answer your question if any particular entity caters to Homosexuality (as I just don't know) but I can honestly tell you that I don't know of any entity that would not help you. But Spirits of humans is a different story.
Take care

Re: Deities, Angels, Spirits, Saints: Questions and Answers
Hello,
I'm not sure where to post this. I was working a honey jar, and today I have had a conversation with the Spirit helping me. He told me to light a road opener candle.
I have had such an experience before when praying to Saint Martha. It's like a conversation I have in my head.
My question is can this happen? I mean no disrespect to the Spirit, but this is the first time I have felt such connections. So I find it quite new..
