Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Hi everyone, Blessings to all.
I have a question that I can't find the answer to I have searched in "Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic" and also online. Online, I find conflicting answers.
While taking my dog outside this morning I had found a blue jay feather and was wondering what is it's Hoodoo properties and what is it generally used for. I have heard it said that the blue jay is a trickster and steals items that it finds interesting, I have also heard that it is strong in protection, also heard that it is the "blue bird of happiness" .
I have absoultly no idea how this curio should be used, can anyone point me in the right direction?
thanks.
Peter

The Blue Jay was long regarded by Native Americans as a tricker, thief, and clever bird, highly protective of its territory. One early mention of its use in hoodoo comes to us from the folkloric collections of Mary Alicia Owen, a White woman who recounted the beliefs and practices of her family's former slaves in Missouri, who were of mixed African and Native decent.
See "Aunt Mymee's Tricker Bag for Disgrace or Death" in "The Art of Making Mojos," page 52.
In Black culture, the Jay is known for its loud shrieks and the Hawk is known for its bravery -- and in witness to this, we can see the name taken by the R'n'B singer Screamin' Jay Hawkins as a token. His classic song, "I Put a Spell On You" relates the Jay to hoodoo, firmly, decisively, and LOUDLY.
This will clarify matters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kGPhpvqtOc
I am fairly sure that whoever called the tricky, screaming Jay "the blue bird of happiness" had confused the Jay with the Eastern Bluebird, a darling ball of fluff who nests quietly at the outskirts of farmland.

Ok,
I blended into a fine powder for topping candles your Besamim money mixture, Fenugreek, a whole nutmeg, cinnamon chips, blue flag root, alfalfa, sassafras, Irish moss, lodestone gravel, magnetic sand, pyrite gravel, and High John bits and pieces. My goal is to make the best all around money drawing, growing, keeping and winning in any form, more of it.
I am super excited to say that the brown resulting powder is beautifully charged with magnetism to the point that wherever I hold a weak refrigerator magnet to the mason jar, i feel it being pulled.
My question is, are there any other herbs, roots, animal curious that I could add to make it as powerful as possible? This blend is made to go on the candles I make for money winning, drawing, getting, etc.
THANK YOU!!

That sounds like a great mix. Since our Money Herbs Mix (Besamim Spices) contains several herbs not listed here, you do not need to add them.
The magical qualities of the herbs we carry are described in this book, with folkloric hoodoo spells for use in practical conjure,

Sigh, this makes me feel so great to know I've made a solid one.
I just now added a whole lodestone and pyrite chunk (both from LM as are all the ingredients)
After a lot of sparks and banging around for a minute, my Vitamix created a beautiful powder which I added to the mix in the mason jar. Now, it definitely has a stronger magnetism AND it has a beautiful gold glisten to it. What a perfect and beautiful product I have made with your products.
THANK YOU! <3

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Hi everyone! Happy Wednesday! So, I’ll be making a Banana Cream Cheesecake for the guy I’ve been casually dating.. What edible herbs would be good to add to this that won’t alter the taste? I have powdered Cardamom, I THINK I have Coriander & Cubeb berries but I’d have to double check, I have Dittany of Crete, Ginger, Bay leaf, Cinammon sticks & Cloves... I’m not going to put all of that in there but which do you think would be best to put taste wise? Does the amount put in matter? Can it be like a pinch or does it have to be more? I don’t have any menstrual blood & wont for like two weeks but can I add sexual fluids? Thank you for any help
Edit: I have a honey jar going for him (it’s like 2 or 3wks old) is it okay to put like a teaspoon spoon of honey in it or do you think that’ll be easy to taste? I think I still have Damiana as well..

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
CuriouslilThing,
You can use the honey from a jar to cook for the man this is a traditional method of working the jar. Sexual fluids can also be added to the cake. Most of the herbs you mentioned do not seem the best to make a cake with tbh lol. Cinnamon can be added lightly, if you can crush the items u[, add them to a grinder and mix it with gram cracker to make the pie cheese cake. You can add tonka bean and blend it with a little vanilla extract.
Tonka bean: tonka-bean-questions-and-answers-t8132.html
You can brew him a nice cup of coffee with some of the crushed herbs placed in the coffee filter. Then add the sexual fluid to make him yours ( what goes better with pie then coffee): http://www.luckymojo.com/bodyfluids.html

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Hello everyone!
I am a very avid gardener, and this year finally installed some raised beds with the goal of starting an herb garden focused on magic. I am also looking into installing lights in my apartment and growing herbs during the winter for personal and magical use. I live in the northeast.
For those of you who use herbs and grow your own, I would like to hear about which plants you have found to be particularly useful and rewarding to grow. Also, is there a way to prepare a garden magically to make it an extra wonderful place for making things grow?
What do you do in your gardens and what do you recommend?
Many thanks!

Madame Mercury,
Hello fellow green thumb! I'll start off with, if you have not bought the book "Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic," it's practically a must for working a magic garden.
I began with typical kitchen herbs like rosemary, thyme, mint(might want to pot), bay laurel (grows very, very slow) and catnip. Then moved on to roses and would like to see if peonies can grow in pots. You could probably grow nettle and comfrey easily in the beds. Maybe Basil under the lights. You won't be able to grow everything you need but that is why communities like these are so important. I'm not even sure what zone John the Conqueror will grow in... or Master Root for that matter. Still researching that one.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
I have that book! Another fantastic book I use is Paul Beyerl's Compendium of Herbal Magick-- it's a treasure.
Alas, I think peonies need to be in the ground. I have 15 of them though if you ever would like a bare root! I have four English roses, but they are so veeeeery delicate-- next year I want to see what I can do to encourage more blossoms. I need to learn the art of pruning.
What zone are you in? I have a bay laurel, lemon verbena, and rosemary in pots and adore them-- but I dread bringing them inside this winter. They will die. My apartment does not have the best light.
I was thinking about nettle for next year! Comfrey sounds like a great idea. Thanks!

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
I'm living in California near the Bay Area so 9b I think. I'm originally from Upper MI though and spent some time in Germany. No matter where I go, I try to have at least a little garden. I hear you about the peonies... I wish they liked pots. I think Cali is just too dry and hot for them. It makes me sad because they really are my favorite. Nettle is great in a tea! Very good for vitamins and taking off jinxes! Double duty. I bet you could grow Southern John (trillium) and Solomon's Seal if you have good soil and a little shade. Both look so beautiful too.
Pruning is scary at first. You hear so many horror stories about bad cuts leading to rot and poor growth. I pruned my fruit trees in WA after looking at the agriculture guides published by state universities and it really helped open up the plants for air flow. Cut down on bugs too.
I will defiantly request the flyers and add the book on my next order. I'm especially excited about the flyer on Wildcrafting! Thank you for the suggestions.

Hi, all --
Yes, peonies do like cold winters, which we do not have in Northern California.
But, speaking of Northern California -- there's another book i wrote which may interest you -- "The California Gardener's Book of Lists." It came out in the 1990s -- but we have some copies still in stock in the Lucky Mojo shop -- it lists herbs, flowers, trees, bulbs, and vegetables by California micro-zones and by preferred light and water conditions. Here you go:

For a banana cream cheesecake:
Cardamom yes, if powdered; it is a relative of ginger and is sweet
Coriander no, it is the seed of cilantro and has a parsley flabour
Cubeb berries no, it's peppry, like Black Pepper
Dittany of Crete no (it's like oregano or marjoram)
Ginger yes, sweet and hot
Bay leaf no, it goes in stews
Cinammon sticks yes, but you need the powder
Cloves yes, if powdered
TASTE THEM -- don't just take our word for it. LOL!

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
My question is 3 fold:
1) Recently, I was given a red chicken foot and a black cat bone by someone whom I had working for me. I was told to hang the chicken foot near a door and to wear the black cat bone on my person. The thing is that I want to wear the black cat bone around my neck but there is no way to do so. You see the bone is so very thin and very small that I am afraid if I try to drill a hole in it that it may be damaged. There is also the worry that drilling a hole in the bone may cause not only destruction of the bone but may somehow stop the bone from doing what it is intended to do. Does anyone have any idea how I could wear this bone on my person I mean the only other thoughts I have is to place it in my bra. My fear is that it my get lost during the many examinations, procedures and test I have to go thru doing my many doctor's and hospital visits.
2) I would very much like to obtain another cat bone however, I would like for it to be one that would make me invisible. Does anyone have any idea where I would obtain such a bone?
3) I would like to have a very good and very strong African American reader/conjure/hoo doo person who lives in New Orleans to do some work for me. Does anyone know of a person that fits this description?

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Greetings!
I have a long history of many types of Magic but when I became more interested in Hoodoo on a trip to New Orleans it really spoke to me. I love plants and plant medicine but beginning to work with roots is very powerful to me! They are like darling little pets (i see faces in them and they have different personalities). I enjoy feeding them and spending time with their energies.
I have not yet fixed them as Im waiting for the proper time and purpose and I am not 100% how to do this properly. If not given a home in a mojo, how would one best take care of each root?
I understand about feeding with whisky and anointing with oil but would you keep them tucked away in special place? a box? a bag of its own? or is it better left out on an altar?
Some of my other teachings suggest keeping sacred items out of everyday hubbub... do any of you keep a "tool box"?...this is what I was thinking as I seem to have naturally started one unconciously on my own... but id like to stay true to Hoodoo tradition out of respect for these amazing roots - (all purchased at Lucky Mojo! amazing products and service!!! )

Hello, AphroditeMarie --
Welcome to the forum and thanks for your kind words about our products and service.
The topic of how to store roots and herbs that are not in current use (e.g. in a mojo bag or dressing a candle) is one that has been discussed before in this very thread. Start on page 1 and read the thread and you will see mention of it in the past.
I don't want to repeat what i wrote then, so i will just offer the thread to any newer members who also want to talk about herb storage. If there are enough posts on it, i may split it out into its own thread.
We also have a free flyer on Herb Storage available from the shop when you order herbs. Just askk for it by name in the message area of your order.
The medical qualities of the herbs we carry are described in this book, with traditional folkloric remedies for home-herbalists to try.

Hey, y'all!
I have a Rose of Jericho that I water every now and then. The water I soak it in smells really good. What sort of spells and rituals might it be good for? I've mixed it into a floor wash before and enjoyed the effects. It made things feel fresh and renewed. Any thoughts?
Thanks, y'all!

LeftHandedVirginian,
The plant is often used to bring things back to life, to spout, bring anew again, because it can be a dead heap, get water and restore it self, I would use it in spells relating to that. I know business owners who use them in the shop water them for profit and customers.

Hi everyone,
Happy New Year !!! I was wondering what herbs I would use in a honey jar to sweeten up my boyfriends mother to me. She's a tough one. LOL. I just really want us to have a harmonious relationship. We don't need to be besties but I would like for her to let me in a little. And give me a chance.
Thanks !!!!

Hi decogirl73,
Happy new year to you as well!
For your honey jar, use any of the herbs designed to create harmony rather than romantic love. In the forum thread on honey jars, you will find advice on how to construct them for strengthening all kinds of relationships, so I suggest you read through the thread and see what speaks to you. You can find it here:
general-honey-sugar-sweet-jar-questions ... t5536.html
I hope this helps. Good luck!

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Well, as some folks will no doubt have noticed by now, i am working my way through this entire section of the forum, making sure that every herb and root we carry has a thread for questions and answers, and that within every thread these are pictures of the packets; links to books about the magical, medical, and culinary uses of the herbs; links to discount specials on the herbs; and buy-it-now buttons for everything that has a link.
We stock almost 200 different herbs, some of them in multiple forms, such as whole, cut and sifted, or powder. The variant forms will be bundled into each herb's name, so you can find them most quickly.
Many extant threads simply need updating, but many herbs have never had their own threads, even after all these years (the form went live to the public ten years ago in January 2009). It is my hope that as more people become of aware of the basics of hoodoo, they will come to appreciate the power of rootwork -- literaly working with roots and herbs.
Good luck to all.

Hi,
If herbs are kept in glass jars does that stop the drying process or is it better to keep them in plastic sealed bags?

Lotus Flower,
Herbs should be fully dried prior to storing them and this cannot be done in a jar nor a plastic bag.
Once they have been dried completely, glass jars are preferred because they are moisture and air proof, if well sealed, which plastic is not.

If the root of the plant is unattainable, would substituting a different part of the plant be a valid alternative? I’m having difficulty sourcing Sampson Snake Root and seeds are available. This question is assuming that growing it myself is an issue given location.

Hello!
I wanted to purchase a masters root but your site says it’s out of stock or discontinued. Will you be getting more of it soon or is it no longer for sale?

Hello 24Kpink,
I have moved your post to the correct topic on choosing herbs and roots by condition. Please do not start new topics as it creates clutter on the board and is against forum rules.
Please read through the posts here and click on the links for the grimoire on herbs and roots by condition, and also consider purchasing Miss cat's excellent books (including the "Green Bible" on herbs, roots and their uses). You will find all of the information you're looking for among these resources.
See Hoodoo at a Glance by Miss cat here:
http://luckymojo.com/hoodooataglance.html
Once there you can click the names (which are links) and read the web pages she has written about them.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Hello, my daughter is working on a love box and she was following someone [online] who said to use cotton for the love box.
I own the Hoodoo Herb & Root Magic book and I was looking to see what the properties were for cotton. I know in our traditional Santeria we use cotton for several rituals and cleansings but I didn't know how it was used in hoodoo.
Since I use Catherine's book for herb guidance in a lot of my work, I didn't see cotton in the book.
So, my question to you all...is cotton good for love spell?
Can someone give me some feedback on this, please.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Hello, oniomiladed -- and welcome to the Lucky Mojo Forum.
The person your daughter was following online [whose name i deliberately removed from your post] is a pretty well-known fraud. She pretends to set lights for people but hires others to do the work for a cut of the price. She has been caught sending multiple people the exact same photos of work she claims she is doing personally for each one.
Now, even a fraud could transmit good information, if she had a good source, and this person does have good sources -- but, like many who simply do not respect Black American culture, she mixes in, without explaining why -- things she finds from African Diasporic religions, such as Haitian Vodoun, Cuban Santeria / Lukumi / Ifa, Dominican Sanse, and Cuban Palo. These are all lovely ways of working, but they are not hoodoo ways of working. They have no standing in the Black American community, and were never documented by Black (or White) American folklorists from the 19th century to the present.
Again, there is nothing inherently WRONG with these ways of working -- no more than it would be wrong to venerate a Native American deity or a Hindu deity, or to recite the Surahs of the Quran -- but to call it "hoodoo" is an untruth.
Hoodoo does move and change. Like any culture, it grows by absorption and diminishes by attritition. But it takes a large community's inherent and implicit agreement to move or change a large body of folklore, and it takes TIME. She, an outsider who only recenty jumped into the tradition, and who does not give a good account of her honesty, as witnessed by the failings of her ethics noted above, does not have the weight to move the tradition to suit her notions.
She read a book on Santeria. Great. Now tell me what that has to do with the love spells of Greenwood, Mississippi. LOL!

Hello ILoveHoodoo,
Welcome to the Lucky Mojo forum! We are happy to have you here.
There are many herbs to choose from for your stated goal, and the specific choice would relate to what you mean by getting "stronger." You can find a nice list of herbs and their corresponding conditions here, so see what works best for you:

On one episode of Lucky Mojo Rootwork Radio Hour, Dr Kioni suggested adding snake skin to a love potion. I haven't been able to find snake skin locally, was wondering if snake oil is just as powerful? What is snake oil generally used for?

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Greetings All,
I have tried my hardest to read all the posts in the thread, and I don't think I've found one that addresses my concern. In Hoodoo, it seems like there are higher barriers to entry than other magickal systems. Using oils, candles, mojo bags, herbs, powders, incense, bath crystals, personal concerns, and etc. For a beginner it is quite overwhelming and (excuse my language) a bit irritating. I have a few books with more on the way, but every time I find a spell I'm interested in, it requires various other instruments. I can get personal concerns, like clothes, cigarette butts, pictures, and full names... but hair, menstrual blood, saliva, cum, and bath water are (hopefully) understandably more difficult. I have a copy of the green bible, but as a newbie, I find it hard to know what herbs will accomplish my goals.
Is there like a starter list of all things to buy to begin practicing hoodoo? Is it natural to use soo many resources just to cast one spell? I know every esoteric system tries to weed out the profane (the jokers and thieves), but at this point I've read a lot of material and I would just be happy to know the things absolutely required to do simple love spells, curses, money protection spells, and etc.

Hello avgnordinary,
You seem to be overwhelming yourself in your belief that every spell you attempt would require every item you listed. They do not. Much like baking a cake can be as straightforward as mixing flour, sugar, eggs, vanilla and milk or it may be a more elaborate undertaking including fancy decorating. You don't need to be a master pastry chef to make a simple yet delicious cake, but with practice and effort you can learn to create more ambitious desserts. Same with conjure work.
In hoodoo, we have a wide variety of approaches to consider when working toward a goal, and each has its own set of ingredients. Most are fairly simple, others more complex. There really aren't any "higher barriers to entry" as you suggest. You can begin with a simple approach such as lighting candles but, depending on your goal, you may find you will need to supplement the work with other approaches to manifest your desired outcome.
This forum is full of spell advice for everyone from the beginner on up. You can peruse the board and find the kind of spells that speak to your goals and level of expertise and interest.
As for "starter" products, decide on your goal and then invest in whichever related oils, candles, powders etc. that you feel most comfortable in using and go from there. Each goal you can imagine (like love drawing, money, protection, etc.) has its own section on the forum and investing in a bit of reading can help familiarize yourself with all of the spell approaches you could consider. I think that will help you feel more comfortable with hoodoo in general and your own potential work.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks Miss Athena,
It definitely does. Take it one step at a time.

avgnordinary,
I think you may feel frustrated as a newbie to the work but you are learning, sometimes it is good to focus on one thing and work that using the skills and items you have. Another post a person asked the first thing to buy ( new to this) I suggested to them a Lucky Mojo spell kit because it comes with everything to do the work, with instructions, it is a great way to get in contact with a bath, oils, candles, herbs, and often a mojo. Think about when exploring items in hoodoo and how they are used by asking yourself why a bath, why incense, what the purpose of a mojo, why do you carve a candle, this will help unlock the secrets to the work. Lucky mojo has an amazing amount of resources and books that will help you learn and grow. Miss Athena gave you fantastic advise with a great analogy on the work.

JayDee,
Thank you so much for the advice. Just seeing the spell kits makes me feel more comfortable. I understand that I shouldn't expect to be a master chef when I can't even crack an egg, but seeing a kit makes me feel like I'm not drowning in information and "winging it". Thank you so much.

Hello magical herbalists:
Wondering if there is any magical use of teasel root? (Aka Teazel root or Dipsacus Sylvestris)
I looked in HHRM & this amazing book and didn’t find a listing.
According to WebMD, it is confused commonly with Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) which sometimes is called teasel as well.
Teasel is found in Europe, North America and thought someone knew a magical use.
According to Matthew wood: it is used for Lyme disease, treating kidney essence, muscle pain and arthritis.
He also said in Chinese that a cousin variety Dipsacus japonica loosely translated : “Restore What’s Broken”
Could it possibly be used in reconciliation work?
Thank you.
Respectfully, Signee

Hello Signeedc,
I've also heard boneset referred to as teasel before, but am not familiar with teasel as part of hoodoo practice. I wouldn't add it to a spell unless you knew what energy it brings, so would leave it out of your reconciliation plans.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

Signeedc,
I have not run across any references in the historical literature, and have never met an elder in the African American hoodoo tradition, who gave me any use for Teasel. Just because something exists doesn't mean anyone in this culturally specific form of folk magic used or uses it some certain way .

Hello. I have a Road Opener candle and I already have the Road Opener oil.
But I would like to know what herbs I can dress the candle with?
Please advise. Thanks.

A number of herbs are used for clearing away obstacles, including Lemon Grass, Boneset, Grains of Paradise, and Mint. Find a fuller list at our page :Hoodoo at a Glance" -- just use your browser's search function to find the word "road" or scroll down to find it:
