Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Hi all I'm a newb to hoodoo,I love this forum and website though! I can't wait for my first orders
Is there a creative way to utilize contained moving water for magical workings? I have some new filters and fishless tanks that I'd like to put to good use. From my understanding, you usually use moving water to flush away a factor in your workings. Perhaps contained water would be good in a 'change this negative to a positive' or visa versa, annointing the tank with oil and herbs in the filter, then burning the filter cartridge after 7 days or what have you.
Looking forward to your ideas!
CF

Your question comes under the heading i call, "Is there a use for X in hoodoo?" and, generally, the answer would appear to be no. Folks want to know if there is a use for this that or the other because they like the things or have the things around.
But let's look at what hoodoo is -- and is not.
It is not a set of building blocks. It is a living family-based and community based tradition.
You cannot say, "Hey, guys, how about if we add aquariums to hoodoo, okay?" and get folks to agree, because, frankly, aquariums are not a long-held part and portion of the culture in which hoodoo is based or the natural world which informs all of folk magic.
Moving water spells are derived from the nature of moving water. People long ago learned the power inherent in tagging one's spell along to a natural force. Trying to invert that idea and place a lot of magical power on the act of changing a filter in an aquarium sounds silly to me. I mean, sure, if aquariums are really dear to you and you know them inside and out, perhaps you could use the power of changing filters to change a situation... but at that level of metaphor, i think you would be more or less making a stretch into something unique, not community-based, not family-based, not culturally embedded.
Perhaps you are working from the standpoint of chaos magick, the old mix-and-match let's-make-a-spell thing. You know -- "Hey, there's an old World War Two bomber in a park in my town, can i use it in magic?" or "I have a set of Mary Engelbreit tea pots on a shelf -- can i use them in magic!" Chaos magick is okay in is own right, but it ain't conjure.

Ahhh that makes sense Catherine...Thank you for clarifying.
I won't be mixing them with any hoodoo at all, I want what I do

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
I was sifting through my conjure notes I had taken down whilst learning from my mentor. I came across this little number, as I recall I conveyed an interest toward environmental manipulation while learning that’s how I received this one.
I have to apologize as the wording may be a bit off but the paper I had this written on was accidently left in a box outside during a storm. Some of this is direct quotation while other parts I wrote from memory. But either way this should be a interesting piece of info for you all!!
Beforehand take a piece of string (the size depends on the plant you will be working with) dip it with controlling oil as you close your eyes and say inwardly:
By the powers vested in me and the forces that are without, I ask this string to be the spiritual link from my world to yours. Amen.
Cut the string exactly in half. Store one end in a dark area away from all other energy sources (light, heat, ect) or other hoodoo items as well.
Keep the other end with you.
At dusk go to the establishment you wish to be under your influence. Find the nearest seed producing vegetation by the building or establishment.Extract a few of the seeds (the more seeds the better as you know not all seeds will germinate). Dig the plant up gently as not to disturb the roots too much very LIGHTLY dust the hole with controlling powder and pulverized tobacco. Place a White candle into the hole (making sure it stands upright) light this and say outwardly:
As nature is connected by time and space. My mind, heart and soul are one with them. May the string tie this plant (as you tie the half of string around the plant) to its offspring, by doing so may it in turn tie the existence of __(such and such establishment)___ to it existence as well. Extinguish the flame and collect the candle. Replace the plant but keep the original dirt that was removed. Use new dirt to fill in the hole. The ritual is finalized as you leave tossing some of the remnants of the tobacco and powder mix over your head into the air (this part is important as the dust goes into the air and not the ground).
Return to your home or wherever you plan on planting the seeds. At dawn plant the seeds using the dirt from the original parent plant mixed with a very small amount of tobacco and controlling powder. Light the same candle used before and say outwardly: The seeds of connection have been planted, grow well and grow steady and as you grow may your connection to your parent grow as well.
Extinguish the candle.
When the first sprout is seen it is taken careful note of as that’s the one that will be used in the final spell.
When it’s matured the other half of the string is tied around it as you say: I now bind the power of the soil you grow in to the power of the soil that you were created from. The plant now acts as a spiritual link to the establishment from which you took it from. Whatever is done to the plant in ritual will convey over to the place which you took it from on a more ambiguous but much larger scale.
If I recall correctly this was used as a way to either bless or curse a specific area of land to bring about or attract very very bad happenings or very very good ones depending on the rituals used incorporating it. Also I did not write it down but I remember my teacher telling me this becomes much much stronger when you place a small representation of the establishment around the plant.

This is nice--it strikes me as a blend of old fashioned Hoodoo with some new age aspects thrown in (the use of the word "energy" and some of the more formal ritual language).

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
I am a self taught herbalist, I love herbs and herbal teas. I know there medicinal properties of herbs and now that I am studying Hoodoo, I am learning the magical properties. I wanted to try my hand at it to know my magic.
I purchased herbs after careful study and perusing the herb-magic site. I have solomon seal root, alkanet, boldo leaf, fumitory, alfalfa, sassafras, thyme, peony root and others.
I am considering order a prepared money drawing bag to give me a boost. I plan on getting a whole queen elizabeth root, ginger, cleo may oil, bewitchingoil, and others when I have successful worked my magic. I am going to order a lot. I am writing down scriptures, affirmation, and psalms as well as clearing a space for Money drawing. I have money drawing bath ingredients from Scott Cunningham's book.
I read that one should soak love drawing herbs in Florida water before use to bring out the ashe.
I wanted to know if herbs must be ground to powder with a mortar and pestle or should I just going to use my coffee grinder because I need to work this money magic during the full moon.
I must set up a regimen to fortify my aura with money magnet energy. I was considering formulating a money drawing diet of greens and more greens to enhance the electromagnetic pull of my being on a cellular level.
I think 21 days is customary to see results or benefit for a new behavior.
Thanks for your suggestions.

TresIsIs,
Ashe is an African concept meaning the power of nature. Herbs do not need to be soaked in Florida Water; they are powerful as God made them.
Scott Cunningham's book is on the subject of Neo-Pagan or Wiccan herb usage and methods. There are some similar and shared usages in hoodoo -- and some differences as well.
I'd suggest that you get a copy of Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic by catherine yronwode. (The owner of Lucky Mojo and this website)
She also wrote this book for herbal practitioners who want to garden with magical, medical, culinary, and decorative plants -- "The California Gardener's Book of Lists." It came out in the 1990s -- but copies are still in stock in the Lucky Mojo shop -- it lists herbs, flowers, trees, bulbs, and vegetables by California micro-zones and by preferred light and water conditions.

I'm with the above posters. Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic is the way to go to learn how to work with herbs and roots in *Hoodoo.* Cunningham's book is derived from other traditions.
In conjure we use herbs whole, ground up into powders, and in a variety of ways and now we don't need anything other than prayer and the herbs themselves to bring out their power.

I saw an interesting herb/plant Devils Claw and one named Devils Club. Has anyone used Devils claw in rootwork? If so, how is it used?

I have searched the site as well as the net, and have found nothing on the use of shrimp in rootwork. I've been told that they can be used for dark work, but the person who told me this didn't know anything more. Anybody know anything about this? Thanks!

I want to know how to use dirt dauber's nest in conjure work. I had the pleasure of someone finding and retrieving a dirt dauber's nest for me just recently.
What are the different types of work it is used for: Love, Better Business, Money drawing or Protection.
Thanks for guidance in advance.

I know of the uses of crawfish mud in making doll babies, and using crab shells in reversal work - but I have not personally heard of work with shrimp. Perhaps someone else can speak to this?

This is a Lucky Mojo forum, not a general hoodoo forum. We are happy to help you with what is sold by Lucky Mojo. We cannot help with matters outside the purposes of this forum.
There are a few uses for Shrimp, but I haven't seen it as commonplace in hoodoo.

Hi all! Can anyone tell me about Cicadas in hoodoo. The few things I've found (but not really for Hoodoo) talk about metamorphisis. Being reborn. If that is the case - that would make me happy, but I would like to hear from you guys as to their meanings and uses. Thanks for your help.

Hi Lori,
I'm definitely not a reference when it comes to Hoodoo History, but in the reading I have done, I haven't seen any mention of Cicadas specifically. Anywhere. I have seen them, as you mentionned, used for their transformative energy (particularly the periodical cicada with quite the fascinating life cycle).
In hoodoo, bugs that are used in different contexts include:
ants
termites
spiders
dirt daubers
crabs (shell)
scorpions
snakes (sheds)
wasps
bees
( any that shouldn't be in that list or that have been forgotten - please feel free 2 correct me )
I'd encourage you to search those in the forum search box on the upper right hand corner for various references.

Ive been looking in a few spells and recipes, and I have seen this popping up several times. After some research, it turns out its made from Mercury!
I really don't want to work with that poisonous stuff, anyone know of a good substitute?
Also if you know substitutes for Yellow Precipitate and White Precipitate, too.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Hello, board! For my first post here, I thought I'd share a few conjure tricks I picked up both old and new that involve working with food. (My mother is something of a kitchen witch, but many of her tricks involve using hoodoo herbs and concepts. Neither of us ever realized what she was doing could be hoodoo until I started reading up on this site!)
This recipe is something she calls a "Love Sundae" and goes a little something like this:
Using Tonka Bean Ice Cream (which you can make relatively easily, there are many many recipes for it all over the internet, and the one we use is nothing new), put three to seven scoops in a whipping bowl, add 200-400mls of rose syrup (best to make this yourself) and whip until its mixed in completely. It should have the same consistency as frozen yogurt. Don't worry if it gets too soft, you can always pop it in the fridge for a few minutes after you've mixed everything. (You can add mens to it if you wish, though I have not tried it this way.) Once this consistency has been achieved, serve in a chilled bowl with hibiscus syrup or honey and sprinkle candied rose petals (or candied hibiscus, depending on if you're aiming for lust or love) and serve! This little treat has worked great for me in the past, as well as being a light and delicious treat.
There are many modifications you can make to regular desert favorites to draw love out of a person, as well. It helps if during the preparation you pray over your ingredients, or even dress and light a candle and keep it burning during the process. (The Love Me or Bewitching candles worked best for me.)
Usually during the mixing process I will say something like "As this treat is sweet to him, may he always sweet to me."
***An additional note: You can add candied lavender petals or lavender syrup if your target is of the same sex as you.
I hope this trick works as well for all of you as it does for me!

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
This is a material commonly used in Haitan Vodou, and is not used in Hoodoo. Since mercury is used to "heat things up" in Haitian Vodou, you would want to look at herbs and ingredients in Hoodoo culture that do the same thing without being poisonous.
And there are many, but exactly which ones to use depends entirely on what work you're doing.
For example, if you're looking to Hot Foot someone out of a house or get rid of an enemy, you might use Red Pepper or Black Pepper or Sulfur.
If you were looking to "heat up" a Love Drawing mojo bag, you might use a tiny bit of Ginger (it's a sweet hot spice) or some Cardamom herb. Cinnamon is also good for heating up and speeding up love and money work.
Good luck, and please do not handle mercury: it can really hurt you!

Four Theives Vinegar can be taken internally for cleansing and protection.
http://www.luckymojo.com/fourthievesvinegar.html
http://www.luckymojo.com/mojocatbaths.html#special
Also some cleansing herbs are edible (such as sage) and can be eaten or brewed into teas, but due to different people have various sensitivities and allergies, it's best to check with a professional herbalist before taking an herb internally that you do not have previous experience with.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
On one episode of Lucky Mojo Rootwork Radio Hour, Dr Kioni suggested adding snake skin to a love potion. I haven't been able to find snake skin locally, was wondering if snake oil is just as powerful? What is snake oil generally used for?
Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
LuckyMojo Curio Company does not sell snake oil, so asking about it is off-topic since this forum is here to help people chose and use LuckyMojo spiritual supply's. LuckyMojo does however sell shed snake skin.

Oh okay, I understand. (no hurt feelings, thank you for understanding that I certainly wasn't attempting to be off topic or cause any harm!) Thank you also for your response Turnsteel, I do appreciate it! I will be more careful about posting on topic from now on.

hello all...
curious what anyone's opinion is regarding pairing certain roots together as male and female companions in love work.
right now, i'm on the path of high john the conqueror matched with angelica or ginseng matched with queen elizabeth root.
any thoughts or opinions are appreciated!
much love and luck to everyone!

I personally was taught that High John is matched with Queen Elisabeth while Angelica finds her match with Ginseng. When in doubt ask the root!

ElectroKid, you would have to ask an entomologist (scientist who studies insects). There are millions of species of insects and they live in a wide variety of habitats, and are seen due to seasonal and climate changes.
If you are asking whether insects in a graveyard are supernatural in origin, the answer is "probably not." There is probably a water source, food source, or wind current that accounts for them.

John the Conqueror goes with Queen Elizabeth. Angelica goes with Ginseng.
This is based on tradition, and when you actually hold the roots, you may smell why.
You may also see why.
And don't forget the names --
Conqueror and Queen have a certain resonance that Conqueror and Angel Root do not.
But Angel Root and Wonder of The World do have a verbal resonance.

Is there any tradition in Hoodoo of using Jimson Weed (Datura Stramonium, aka Thorn Apple, Devil's Apple, Jamestown Weed, etc.) for any purpose? It seems like there would be...it's an odd-looking plant, with some colorful folk names, that grows wild in the American South and is easily identifiable, not to mention its botanical properties and history of use by various American Indian Nations...
...and yet I've only come across reference to it in relation to Hoodoo once, and then from an unreliable online source...
Anyone know anything about it???

Datura is a poison; it has been used by Native Americans in endurance / poison / psychotropic rituals. If it were to be used in hoodoo, the use would be symbolic, not in the form of feeding it to anyone.
Lucky Mojo does not grow or sell this herb. I have seen it kill grazing animals and chickens, and i strongly caution against working with this plant.

Makes for some good stew, just use it in any recipe where you would normally use a ham bone (red bean stew, or split pea= yum.)
Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Oh, yes...Jimson Weed sadly kills a few foolish teens seeking a cheap high every couple of years or so...no, no, no, no ingestion suggested. The thorny little seed pods are just so distinctive, and what with the name "Devil's Apple", I figured, as u said, there might be some symbolic use...>shrugs<

Still though. I think it's a cool thing. In this modern day and age newer forms of as what Cat calls it "chaos" magic? Is bound to come out! Our world changes and surely how folks do magic (changing things by force of will).
One thing's for sure though, what you're doing surely ain't hoodoo, or anything traditional.
It's looking fusion and avant garde. But you know what they say, personal is better when you're doing magic. Be creative man! Sounds weird, but who cares. In this world we need variety, and here it is.
When I say the post I thought you were making an aquarium altar or something!

"They" in this case, are most often people who never studied under a real teacher and understood the value of cultural tradition.Jinglepop wrote:...But you know what they say, personal is better when you're doing magic. Creative is fine. But "creativity" is best placed after "education".
Got an aching tooth? Come to our brand new, creative and intuitively educated dentist! - I don´t think so.
The use for aquariums in Hoodoo would be to empty out the water and grow herbs in it. Or to keep fishy people busy, so that they stop "fingerpainting" spells and get themselves into trouble.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Hi,
Trying to find more specifics on the use of Snake Head Herb.
I found the listing for it in Cat's Book, Hoodoo Herb and Root magic, for a revenge spell to send back the evil that was sent to you.
Also in the Course book, in a strong jinx against an enemy spell.
But, it is listed as being used along with snake shed (skins) as well....and I am wondering if I need both?
I do not see snake head herb for sale on the Lucky Mojo site.
Is there a substitution I can use, or do you have it under another name?
I need to know for a revenge/reversal spell.
Thanks,
Lunalamia

Some herbs like Basil keeps evil away and bring peace to the home; generally the power of the herbs are used with intent. Your question is like "could i receive norishment or gain weight from having bread in storage in my kitchen?" No, you would have to eat the bread.

Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Hi everyone. I have some questions on 3 separate animal curious
1) While I was cleaning out my horse trailers today I found a number of snake skin sheds several with what appear to be the head parts of the skin. Looks like a few of them made a nest in one (i really should clean these things out more often. Bad Blaze!) Other than what can already by found on Lucky Mojo's site I was wondering what other uses there might be for these.
2) Can a bear tooth be used in hoodoo at all? A dear friend who works at a zoo recently gifted me a few of these. (no bears were harmed!) I would think perhaps for protection or strength?
3) Horse teeth, or hair or hooves or well anything horse for that matter. I am a professional horse trainer and as a result I have a constant supply of hoof shavings and hair. I also have quite a collection of horse teeth. Before anyone yells at me, let me explain that horses like humans have baby teeth and when they reach about 3 and a half to five they lose them and are replaced with their adult teeth. I often find them in grain and water buckets and especially if they are my own horses or client horses i'm especially fond of I tend to keep them. I was wondering if I might use any of these things in hoodoo.

1) As far as what is not covered on Lucky Mojo's site i would recommend cat's book Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic. It has a fantastic listing for Snake/Snake sheds.
2) Haven't heard of a Bear's tooth being used in Hoodoo, more of a Native American/Shaman curio.
3) I have not heard of using any Horse parts in hoodoo other than the obvious Horse Shoes for luck. Perhaps someone who knows different can correct me.
Hope I've helped some. Thank you for the cool information!

Here's the link for information on snake sheds and there is also a link for the book suggested above if you scroll down.
http://www.herb-magic.com/snake-sheds.html
As a side note, I have also read that snake skin is used in some workings because it is said to have transformative power, because the snake sheds its skin to make room for new skin, sort of a rebirth-renewal type thing. I don't know if that is how it is used in traditional hoodoo, but I have learned that most herbs and curios are versatile and can be used in different types of workings.

Human baby teeth are sometimes used in protective work for children. But then children start losing -- or rather replacing -- their baby teeth long before adulthood. I don't know if the analogy would work very well for horses. I must say I've never heard of the use of horse teeth in hoodoo.

I have snake sheds, graveyard dirt, sulphur, and insecticidal chalk in my curio cabinet. My luck and spiritual energy have NOT gone to the dogs since I began keeping these things in the house.

I think its fine to have your harsher stuff stored inside your home, but if you have a garage or a shed it might be nice to place those ingredients there--not so much because of the vibes but because if you have curious cats, determined dogs, or children they can get into them, make a mess, and possibly eat them (which in some cases is really not good). Keep your poisonous or unsavory things stored out of reach at the very least.

Hi Artaynia,
I'd ask you this:
1-have those red pepper flakes been laid for someone?
2-have those red pepper flakes been prayed over?
3-have you asked the Spirit of the red pepper to flare up tempers and enflame communication?
No?
It is not likely there would be more arguments in that room.
I use red pepper flakes and cayenne pepper on a regular basis in my home cooking. Neither my husband nor I is any more aggressive for that
On the contrary, the taste is quite pleasant for both of us. And the kitchen, where I store them, is where we have much of our most engaging conversation.
Hope it helps; blessings.

could I use any pink flowers in love works such as adding to oils. I have some pretty pink impatiens in my yard and I want to add them to a bottle so badly but I wasn't sure if I could add any flower or if it had to be a specific type like roses, lavender, etc. please help. thank you
Re: How to Use Lucky Mojo Magical Herbs, Roots, Seeds, Flowers Questions and Answers
Color and type of flower has significance in spell work. Pink is symbolic and used for attraction and romance type work. Roses (http://herb-magic.com/rose-petals.html) are traditional used as a symbol of love, romance and sexual attraction. Lavender (http://herb-magic.com/lavender.html) is used to draw good luck in love from members of the same sex.
