The 23rd Psalm is very commonly used in works involving money drawing.

One of the things I picked up from my grandmother was to speak to her High John root (for the longest time, I thought she would talk to a doll, until she told me she'd "sewed up that old root in the doll"). That was the root she'd taken with her to the Crossroads, and she said that a long time ago, Ol' John promised to come and help out folks who really needed it - not if you were high and mighty, but if you were someone who really needed help.

So, even before anything else, I anoint my root with High John oil (or more specifically, I anoint the bear skull that I've placed my ol' root in), and ask for his help, reminding him that he said he'd come along and teach folk songs, and teach us how to work for our mojo, to get what we need. Remind him that he said he'd come along and help, and lend a good worker his right hand.

Once that's done (the "engine is primed," as it were), then I move into the rest of whatever trick I'm working. My prayers are usually addressed to the "Divine Providence," and start with a warming of the hands at my Master Spirit candle and then a laying on of hands ("pray by touch," as they say).

Ok, this is on the subject of our prayer, or what we say while doing the spell work. I've seen it on here that the example is to pray like a baptist preacher. And I understand what that is, I've watched a few videos on you tube, etc. I myself have a little difficulty applying this to my work. I seem to get very good results with the work I've done, but I was just looking to finetune. Has anyone put a video or anything up anywhere that we can listen to or watch that actually shows a Root Doctor doing what we do over their honey jars or lights or dolls so we can actually hear what one of the pros MIGHT say if they are doing so money work, or love work, or attraction of luck work. I thought it might be a very good asset to the very new people and the people that have been here and are just looking to maybe pick up a tip or two.

Thanks in advance

This question is a bit tricky. Praying in a traditional way, would mean to pray like someone from within the Afroamerican culture pre WWII? Now, you did see that Baptist deacons fantastic display but that is just one way to do it. Hoodoo is a collection of folk magic culture collected from many different sources and practiced within the Afroamerican society. This does not mean all practitioners were taught to pray in the same way.

Today the pros come from all kinds of cultural backgrounds and deals with clients from all over the world. And most of us has encorporated elements from many cultures in our practice. some of us even adapts our way of praying to the clients condition. If dealing with a muslim who has trouble with Djinns we might wash properly, turn to Mecca and read the appropriate Surahs when we remove it. Or we bow three times with incense between our palms when praying to a Buddha to help a Chinese family. The thumb rule general to all is that we stick to whatever works the best for each specific case. In the Norse region where I come from, the Tradition is to read specific, often inherited formulas other ending and telling out loud in whos name we are doing this work.

Or we make our own wording, linking what we are doing to what will happen on the clients behalf. "As this folds away, so shall all evil fold away from Mrs So and so".

It is not as hard as it sounds. You know when you got it right, because it will feel like body, mind and spirit are one with a strong feeling of knowing that whatever you are praying for or the result of the spell will manifest in reality.

So to finetune your prayers you need to find out what works best. For you. And you client. In all situations or in every single specific situation.
Good luck.

Yes, It's true. I am full of tears and very very emotional. I cry when I'm happy, sad, angry, etc... When I pray OMG.. I go in full force. What I'm trying to figure out is, will this affect or effect my spells. I've read that this can hinder my work. Any thoughts?

Your tears means that you are very emotional; crying in my opinion is a methd of cleansing and is very theraputic.

If you are crying out of hysterical out-of-control emotions and thoughts (like when in crisis mode), then that is not all that conducive to focused work. However, if you are crying because you are touching on deep, sincere emotions related directly to your focused petition, then that can be quite powerful.

I also often cry when working for myself. :)

I seem to do the same thing..well...only with blessing, love, healing, road opener type of work ect. (I swear Road Opener candles really make me cry.) I don't cry over money work though. I expect I will be doing a lot of crying in the next round of work I will be doing. Hopefully not hysterically. I swear I look like a freak for 2 days after a good cry. Funny thing is...I was never a cryer until I fell in DEEP love...and never as much as I do when doing spellwork for myself! I feel ya iconcurr!

Is there any suggestion for a Psalm to use with a cast off evil set. I bought a white figure man candle & cast off evil oil, to cast off any problems my bf has, whether it be negativity, depression ,addiction. What would be an appropriate Psalm?

I was wondering, what is the holy name to use in the 23rd Psalm? I just read Secrets of the Psalms, and it talks about (silently) invoking certain holy names in particular Psalms. But I noticed he didn't include the 23rd Psalm. Does anybody know what it is?

I was wondering about the Songs of Solomon - Love songs of Solomon, I know it does not matter what verse to say. But are they gender specific, i.e. {verse1- male verison, verse2 - female version} is there much of a difference?

One more question? How do I conjure the solomon into prayer....I'm adapted to my 3 P''s....Psalms, Petition, Then Heartful Prayer...can anyone let me know if this a correct form of doing my work? Thank you.

Sakura the use of "secret names" is part of a Kabbalistic tradition that isn't always used in conjure/hoodoo. People will pray the Psalms by themselves. If you choose to use the Names that is your decision. Some do and some don't.

i just had a quick question, how long does one usually pray over their candles before they light them. I know its a personal thing for most folks, but some feedback would be great. Sometimes, i just feel as maybe i didnt put enough time praying, so im looking for other points of view.
And a quick thanks again to Miss Bri and to Conjureman Ali for your help :)

I've had my copy of Secret of the Psalms and I am proud I use it...my rootworker discussed with me to use the SONGS of SONGS or SONGS of SOLOMON [verse 1-3] in my love-drawing work. I looked onto my table of contents and I have to be honest and say i'm lost on where the paqe is or where it is located...may I ask of assistance? Thanks...[excuse me if this is a dumb-question  ]

Ok, so I found an online version of the Bible, but it's just in CHAPTERS. And I saw the COME TO ME and FIRE OF LOVE explanations on the sites, but they're broken up into selections, as of the chapters have the actual versions which are longer.

If my AIRR worker told me to do the verses 1-3 do I do CHAPTERS 1-3? I apoloqize if I am beinq too analytical with this research I just want to know which ones to say and the correct way to say it.

A good selection of verse from the Song of Solomon is provided by LM in the page on Marriage Spiritual Supplies: http://www.luckymojo.com/marriage.html

I've used that particular selection during periods of marital ''irritation'' and it's aided immensely in seeing the beauty of the Other.

In specific answer to your question however: each Chapter is separated into a given number of Verses, therefore chances are that chapters 1-3 was meant since otherwise you would have had to know which verse 1-3 from which chapter. However, in order to be certain: contact your root worker and have them clarify the detail for you.

I would suggest actually purchasing a Bible if one wishes to work with Bible verses. If money is tight, buy one at a used book store or get an inexpensive "gift and award" Bible here:

(Look under " Christianity".)

Used Bibles are inexpensive -- and as Mama Micki points out, so are new ones. I strongly prefer the King James Version. Your mileage may vary.

Make sure you include fast luck too.

I would use psalms 8, and 17 have been good when I need the money to pay for something like a bill. And 10,21,23, and/or 26 have been good me as well.
Thank u St. Martha for everything you have done on my behalf.

Although fast money is gr8 (particularly when unexpected bills or problems occur  ), preparing for the long haul by working with Wealthy Way, Money Stay With Me & Steady work alongside regular readings of psalms 23, 65 & 95 may be avenues to look at. (& Wealthy Way products smell so absolutely Divine it's hard to not want to fix pretty much everything in the house with it  )

Unread post by SleepyMojo » Tue Jun 14, 2011 2:53 am

Hello to all.

I'm still in the process of reading HITAP and of clarifying what Hoodoo is and isn't, and I have now a question related to meditation / concentration / visualisation:

1) Are meditation / concentration / visualisation practices part of Hoodoo's "toolbox" (even implicitly) or does the practitioner only use prayers to Saints e.g. ?

2) Same question for mantras: are there equivalents in Hoodoo ?

I'm not asking for a theoretical answer but for the actual use of visualisation + meditation + etc. in the *African-American Hoodoo* as taught by LM.

I looked for this topic in the forum and in the on-line course, and I couldn't find anything specific. Sorry if I missed the page(s)...

Many thanks in advance.

Hi there,

Your use of the word "implicitly" is what complicates the answer.

If you are asking if Eastern style meditation or mantras are used in traditional Hoodoo the answer is "no."

However--is visualization used? Yes--we talk about focusing your intention on the goal of your spell work all of the time.

We are different than some other magical tradition in that we DO NOT typically subscribe to the idea that visualization alone can achieve your goal, thus the use of roots, candles, oils, etc.

Prayer is a huge part of Hoodoo and so depending on the individual's attitude about prayer meditation/contemplation will enter into the picture. I, for instance, practice contemplative prayer so meditation is a part of my practice in that sense.

Mantras are specific to Hinduism and some forms of Buddhism. Workers (like myself) who honor a Hindu deity like Ganesh may chant one of his mantras when invoking his aid. Is it traditional Hoodoo? No. Is there a long history of Eastern/Oriental crossing with traditional Southern Hoodoo? Yes. If you are using the word "mantra" in a more general sense meaning a chant or repeated phrase that is designed to put you in a specific frame of mind/spirit, then yes, some traditional workers do use chants, like: money come, money stay, money grow--I would not consider that a mantra; properly speaking it's not, but as you can see, it depends on how you are using the word.

Also, it bears repeating--Hoodoo is primarily framed in a Protestant Christian tradition and so the many of the most traditional workers will pray to Jesus Christ and a common way of ending prayer in Protestant circles is "in Jesus' name I pray, amen." Hope that helps!

Blessings,

Miss Bri wrote: Is there a long history of Eastern/Oriental crossing with traditional Southern Hoodoo? Yes.
I just want to chime in and say that this Eastern/Oriental influence is on a fairly superficial level. It started in the 1880's or thereabouts, when New Thought, Theosophy, Krishnamurti, Helena Blavatsky, etc., began to attract attention in the U.S. This led to a fad for oriental imagery in general -- everything from random Asian images on fabrics (there's a wonderful little bit if description in Elmer Gantry of a cheap apartment decorated by a pair of young women) to "Lucky Buddha" incense in candle shops.

As Miss Cat has observed, when a deity or religious symbol or curio comes to the attention of another culture, it tends to be adopted as a generalized lucky symbol; much of its specific, indigenous meaning does not carry over.

Now, the Spiritualist link goes back much farther - as far back as the Civil War, when folks were naturally worried about their men on the battlefield. Contact with the dead was a keen interest, naturally.

At this time, too, Spiritualism was a) still scientifically plausible, and b) attractive to social liberals, many Spiritualists were involved in, or at least sympathetic to, the abolitionist movement. In this way, African-Americans were exposed to Spiritualist thought and New Thought, and it developed into a rich, nutritious stew of Pentecostal, Catholic, and Spiritualist elements -- the Spiritual Church movement, of which M.I.S.C. is one of the most recent developments.

So you might see the Hotei Buddha on hoodoo folks' prosperity altars -- but Vipassana meditation classes? That would be very rare indeed -- and probably a very new development.

Hope this helps,

Miss Michaele

SleepyMojo, the power of conjure comes specifically from two things: prayer and spirit. Prayer is used as a means of moving spirit--be it the spirit of the herbs, or drawing down of the Spirit of the Lord.

The way I was taught by traditional conjurers couldn't really be compared to any form of Eastern chants or mantras. Similarly I was never taught to "visualize" anything. The power of prayer rests in the heart, not the mind and its ability to visualize or imagine.

Here's what I was taught to do, I was taught to begin by letting myself feel with my whole being what I wanted to happen, then to let that feeling start rolling off my tongue as I pleaded my case before God--I mean really letting the emotion build up to the point where High Heaven could hear me. Then as I reached that point where it seemed like the whole of God's Heavenly Court was moved by my prayer I was told to "hand it all over to the Lord." I was taught to do this by ending every petition with prayers of praise thanking God for already taking care of it.

That's it. I was then to walk away and know that God took care of the matter. From the Gullah people that I met to the conjurers of my youth, they all taught me almost a similar method of praying. There was no chants, no mantras, no visualization. Everything was done with the heart, not the mind. This type of praying is taught directly from the Bible itself. If you read any of the Psalms they usually have a similar format and you'll find that Jews and Christians--mystical or not--have used this form of praying effectively for ages.

Now that isn't to say you can't rely on a mantra or chant for your work, if that's the way you want to do it. I am only telling you how I was taught to pray in traditional conjure work.

I think what complicates this post is terms like meditation and visualization--because in our day and age these words can mean so many different things and come from so many different traditions. What Ali is talking about for instance, is a type of ecstatic prayer. I am familiar with it from growing up in the Baptist church--the best Baptist preachers as well as many traditional workers invoke just such a state as Ali describes. Now you will find version of ecstatic prayer in many different cultures and religions--Jews have their own type of ecstatic prayer for instance. I would not call that meditation or visualization--but some probably would use either of those terms when trying to describe it. It always goes back to what miss cat says--we can't teach you how to pray--you have to discover that for yourself :-)
Blessings,
Bri

Many Christians pray in "tongues" or "in the Spirit," which may be considered a form of ecstatic prayer. The general belief is that, as Ali said, the prayer is coming from the heart not the head. Thanking God in advance is also wonderful advice.

Just a belated chime-in on this thread.:

Sleepymojo -- everyone answered your questions very clearly, but one thing you mentioned was not fully addressed -- you mentioned that you are studying my "online course."

I do not teach an online course and never have done so.

You may have confused me with another teacher or you may have confused my free book Hoodoo in Theory and Practice with a "course" but it is not a course -- it is a free book.

I do teach a one-year course, but it is neither free, nor is it online. It is published in the form of a 432 page hardcover book and costs $108.00.

You may read more about the course i teach here:

This is a great explanation ConjureMan Ali. I have been reading The Master Book of Candle Burning by Henri Gamache and I know what you mean about emotion. Just reading some Psalms in the book made me feel like I was being "heard" and I cant wait to use it into my conjure work. :)
Thank you for protecting me Santa Muerte.

Understood. I asked the question because I wanted to to avoid the trap of mixing different cultures, however, so I'll follow your advice.
Thanks again.

I'd also recommend a concordance so you can find verses to fit your particular situation.

Just thought I'd share this since it's passed:

A few weeks ago, I was working on a honey jar. One day, I was really angry and sent my ex's new GF a letter. While I was writing the letter, I could literally feel the anger and dislike of the situation. In the middle of writing it, I turned around to look at the candleon top of the honey jar I had lit not even an hour before, and guess what? It melted down almost completely with a whole lot of wax residue and many tears over the jar - within only 5-10 minutes!! This was a 4 hour candle. Amazing.

So I really believe that the energy you send out affects everything you do. Think good, positive thoughts - send out good aura. Take a lesson from what happened to me!
